The three Gardners buried in the Gardner Cemetery in DeKalb County, AL, are my great-grandparents and a great-uncle. I found the little burying ground back in the 1980's--it's way back in the woods. With the help of several family members I had it cleaned up and the fence, with its charming little gate, restored. I think there are other graves there, but was able to find only three stones. There's an error in the information Liz (bless her!) found, however. Sarah Matilda Gardner was the wife of Joseph H. Gardner. William S. Gardner was their son. His early death was the result of a bizarre accident. He was out nutting with friends. One of the party climbed into a tree with a hachett to bang on the limbs & jar the nuts off. The hachett slipped from his hand & fell on g'uncle Willie's head, killing him. He left a widow and two small sons, Ralph & Leslie Gardner. Joseph H. Gardner (the 3rd of this name)
