I find it interesting that so many Gardners have the two different spellings as my husband's does. In 1860, and 1880 they are spelled in the census, "Gardiner". But, the story goes in his family that William painted his mailbox and accidentally left out the "i" in Gardiner, so this branch became Gardners. The descendants of his brother, Charles, still spell their name Gardiner. Penny
