I found this note in a book that belong to Joseph's grand-son:::: My Grandfather Joseph Gardner, Related to General Putnam was raised in Boston Mass. went to St. Domingo and married. owened large Coffee Plantation, when the insurrections cane up they escaped by the aid of some freindly slaves and came out on one of Girands ship to United States. The French Goverment made St. Domingo pay my Grandmother so much a year during her lifetime for property destroyed as she was a French Subject, She and her husband are buried in the Barboursville old Cemetery.
