Hello, I've heard you tell of Gardners from all over the east coast but none from Indiana. I could really use some help. Maybe they just lived there for a short time. I only have two names to go on : Thomas Gardner & Mary Parker. My grandfather was their son Lawrence Jack Gardner, he was born 1888. Please help! Mary Kulp
Mary, For many, Indiana was a gathering place and point of departure for the westward movement, most notably that of the Oregon Trail. In my family, James Gardner, Sr who was born in Deep River, Gilford, NC 4 May 1776 and his wife Elizabeth Starbuck of Nantucket moved to Wayne County Indiana with their family where he died 11 Mar 1825 and she died there 26 Jan 1865. Their son, John Lucian Gardner, born 1805 at Deep River, NC married at Wayne County Indiana on 3 Oct 1825 with Margaret Harris. They had their son Benjamin in Iowa 21 Dec 1846 and then in early 1850s they and their family joined the movement westward on the Oregon Trail I am told that these Gardner families may have fled northward from NC because of Quaker response to the social and political issues of the south and westward because of an epidemic movement. It seems that I have seen maps showing migration paths from the Carolina area northwesterly, splitting with one path to Iowa and the other to Indiana. It seems that some of my Gardners must have split up, going both directions.
