    1. [GARDNER] Jefferson Co., NY GARDNERs

    3. May as well "jump in the soup" with my GARDNER line "in limbo" in Jefferson Co., NY. My 3rd grgrfa, Monroe Madison GARDNER was born in Sackets Harbor, Jefferson Co., NY on 24 April 1822. Orphaned at an early age, Monroe is probably residing with an uncle and aunt who raised him, Jonathan (b ca 1778) & Clarissa ___(b ca 1780) GARDNER in the 1830 census in Sackets Harbor. 1850 and 1860 census give both Jonathan and Clarissa's birthplaces as CT (1850) and Jonathan's as MA (1860). Have been unable to find anything about these two except a deed (no additional information gained). They had at least a half dozen children, but have no definite names for them. Widowed Jonathan was living next to a younger Preserved GARDNER in 1860. Family tradition has it that Monroe's father was a sailor up and down the St. Lawrence, and that his mother's maiden name was GARDINIER and of French Canadian descent. Two GARDNERs served on the "Oneida" during the War of 1812 battle at Sackets Harbor, a Robert GARDNER and Charles GARDNER. Both of these given names repeat in successive generations. Monroe appears in 1849 in Cleveland, OH marrying Ann Eliza SEAMAN in January and in the 1850 Federal Ohio census residing in Ohio City (now the near West side of Cleveland) with son, Edwin Monroe b Jan 1850 and a Jenny Lind GARDNER, age 5. Another son, Alfred was born in 1851and in about 1862 was taken by a "cousin" for protection during the Civil War (Monroe served 2 years), and was never heard from again, supposedly taken to Chicago, then Minnesota, then perhaps Texas or California. Ann Eliza died in 1852 and is buried in Cleveland. Monroe remarried (my 3rd grgrmo) in Nov 1852 to Martha E. TANNER, b Aug 1833 in Tunbridge Wells, Kent, ENG. I am so stymied with this line that I would appreciate ANY GARDNER information with connections to Jefferson Co., NY, just to sort them all out. There were many GARDNER families in Jefferson and surrouonding counties. Would anyone be willing to collect "Northern" GARDNERs ? I would volunteer, but have too many "irons in the fire" right now.
