Hi, everybody: ** PLEASE DO NOT REPLY TO THIS MESSAGE IN SUCH A WAY THAT IT GOES TO THE LIST ** This is a gentle reminder that this is the GARDNER list. Subject lines for messages (and for replies!) that say "Gardner line" are singularly *UN*helpful. Every message on the list is supposed to be about one "Gardner line" or another. Every message to the list also has [GARDNER] added to the beginning of the subject line. Many of our fellow subscribers use the subject line to determine which messages to read in full, and possibly respond to; a message with the subject "Gardner line" may lose out on the one reply that could answer *all* the author's questions. Here is how it looks: [GARDNER] Gardner line Think about it. Then, please include something in your subject line that helps identify the person, location, and time period, as much as is known or can be guessed at. For replies, every e-mail client that I know of allows the author of the reply to edit the subject line. For some examples, NONE OF WHICH ARE REAL as far as I know: John, husband of Mary, VT 1840's John Quincy Gardner, b. 1855 George Washington G., d. 29 Feb 1800, NC Rhode Island GARDNERs, early 1600's Note that I am not recommending any specific rigidly defined format, and that I am not entirely forbidding the appearance of "Gardner" in the subject line, when it makes sense. Also note that persons who reply to Digest messages and who do not change the subject line, and -- even worse -- those who quote the entire digest in their replies :( are subject to being unsubscribed in Digest mode and resubscribed in List mode, at the list admin's discretion. The GARDNER-L list is quite well-behaved, and I am grateful for that. I'd rather be trying to help figure out who a person's ancestors are, than whether to cut him or her off from the list, that's for sure. Everybody makes a mistake now and then. However, unrepentant repeat offenders in any of these categories may be put on moderation (messages will be blocked until approved by the list admin), or, in persistent and egregious cases, banned altogether. And now, back to dead ancestors. Darrell ** PRIVATE REPLIES ONLY, PLEASE, BUT THOSE ARE WELCOME ** RootsWeb List Admin - 5 VT and 1 MA location lists Darrell A.
