I have a list of Confederate Dead compiled for marking graves at Rock Island. It is 38 pages. I went there about 10 years ago because my g-grandfather was imprisoned there although he did not die there. It was a very emotional experience although I had to ask in the gift shop to get information on the Prison. I think Rock Island was or is an army arsenal, so most of the area is devoted to that information. I walked through the cemetery and went to where the wooden barracks for the prisoners had been. I also got a booklet, "A Short History of the Rock Island Prison Barracks. If you write to Rock Island Arsenal Museum", Rock Island, IL 61299-5000 phone 309 782-5021, you possibly could get them to send you this information. The List of the Dead didn't cost anything, and the little "History", 51 pages, only cost a little. The name Manilla Gardner is a new one to me. I have seen Manilla as a first name and as a last name, but never with surname Gardner. I will keep my eyes open for this wonderful rare name. Liz
Hi This name may not seem unusual to you, but I have come across it three times in my mothers family. The name is Manilla (sounds like vanilla only with a m) my mothers sister Manilla Jane Gardner III, my grandfathers sister Manilla Jane Gardner,Jr. and my great grandmother Manilla Jane McFarland Gardner. Has anyone come across these names in their research? Virginia
I have the 1870 census records for African American. I will do look ups. But please understand. I'm rebuilding files from two crashed computers AND Would/Need first and last names. 2 surnames only and give me time to reply Thanks Sandra
