    1. [GARDNER] Colonel David Gardner
    2. Liz Boulais
    3. COLONEL DAVID GARDNER Among the native early pioneers of this town and county not a man, so far as we know, has lived so long on the place where he was born as he subject of this sketch. He is of English origin by both parents. His father, Samuel Gardner, was a native of Pownell, Bennington co., Vt., and was born July 6, 1775. His mother, Miss Deidamia Joslin, a native of Thompson, Ct., was born April 5, 1775. Samuel Gardner was married to Miss Deidamia Joslin, Jan. 3, 1799, and immediately emigrated to Otsego County and settled in Burlington on the farm now owned by their son David. They continued to reside on the same farm till their death. They had five children, namely, Mehetabel, David, Hiram, Edward, and Benjamin, the last of whom is dead. In politics, Samuel Gardner was a Whig. He died April 28, 1860. Mrs. Gardner died Nov. 21, 1853. Colonel David Gardner was born on the farm where he now resides in Burlington, Otsego Co., N. Y. Oct. 11, 1802. His advantages for an early education wre very limited, as he was obliged to remain at home on the farm to aid in supporting the family. He continued with his parents on the farm till their death, and has since resided here. He married Miss Maria J. Cook, a native of Exeter, Otsego County, Oct. 20, 1829. She was born about 1806. By this union five children were born, namely, Adaline M., Deidamia, Carrie A., Otis C., and Samuel W. Mrs. Gardner was a lady greatly esteemed by those who knew her. She was a faithful wife and a very devoted mother. She died in June, 1846, and was buried in the town of Windfield, Herkimer Co., N. Y. The colonel was married to his present wife, Mrs. S. R. Joslin, widow of s. r. Joslin, of Essex, Vt., Feb. 15, 1847. Mrs. Gardner’s maiden name was Martha Enos, daughter of Sessions and Mehitabel Enos, and was born in Lester, Addison Co., Vt., July 6, 1816. Her father was a native of Woodstock, Conn., and her mother of Union, Conn. Mr. Gardner has now one of the best farms in the town, of more than 300 acres, and at one time he owned over 400 acres. He has lived to aid in the building of all the improvements on his farm, a view of which, with portraits of himself and wife above, may be seen elsewhere. The colonel cast his first presidential vote for General Jackson at his first election; but in politics she was identified with the Whig party until the organization of the Republican Party. He never sought any political offices in his town, preferring the quiet of home to any political honors. He has, however, been assessor for a great many years, and supervisor of his town. The colonel was formerly connected with the State militia, entering at the age of eighteen as a private, and gradually advanced through the various military positions until he became colonel. He was very fond of the military tactics. He is now an old gentleman of nearly seventy-six, very much broken down in health, but his mind is as clear as ever. He enjoys the confidence of his neighbors, and reviews the part with no apprehension of the future.

    1. Re: [GARDNER] George Gardner
    2. Dwayne Gardner
    3. I am searching for an elusive Nathaniel Gardner who may or may not have been related to George. What I know for sure is this: A Nathaniel Garder was born May 18, 1735 (probably on Nantucket). He married Margaret Heath, (parents unknown) around 1760. Margaret was born sometime around 1740, most likely in Scotland. At some point, Nathaniel Gardner moved to Pittsylvania County Virginia from where he fought in the American Revolution (DAR Patriot Index Volume II, DAR National #309189, 1938), guarding boats under Commander Conway in the Militia at the Battle of Camden. He died in either 1832 or 1833. Margaret died in 1835. They had at least two children (Nathaniel and Heath) and maybe as many as five. His son, Heath Gardner was born January 16, 1761 in Pittsylvania County Virginia. He married Susannah Weldon (daughter of Jonathan Weldon and Mary Elizabeth Hanks) on April 23, 1783 also in Pittsylvania County. Susannah was born May 9, 1765 in Pittsylvania County. Heath also served in the Revolution (DAR Patriot Index Volume I, DAR National #309189, 1938). He died in August of 1829. Susannah died October 8, 1829. They had nine children, one of which was Jonathan. As far as Nathaniel's ancestors, I have heard and seen the following but cannot vouch for its accuracy: "The Gardner family comes from Lymington, Hampshire County (Southampton) England. This was a seacoast town facing south toward the Isle of Wright. The family was seafarers by trade. Thomas Gardner was born in Lymington, Hampshire County (Southampton) England in 1592. He married Margaret Frier in about 1615. He had two sons born in England and accompanied his father (Thomas Sr. ?) to America in 1624. He arrived on Cape Ann, Massachusetts aboard the ship Charity. He came as head of a company called, The Dorchester Company. He settled in Salem, Massachusetts in 1626 and lived there the rest of his life. He was a representative to the General Court in 1637. He died in Salem on December 29, 1674. Margaret died there in 1659. They had at least two children, John and Richard. Richard Gardner was born in Lymington in about 1623. He married Sarah Shattuck (daughter of Samuel and Damaris Shattuck) in Salem in 1650. Sarah was born in England in 1632. Richard was granted a half share of land on Nantucket on March 22, 1666 (or 67) to ".exercise his trade as a seaman." He and his eldest son, Joseph moved there almost at once and purchased some land on Wesco Pond in 1667 from John Bishop. In addition to being a sailor, Richard was elected Chief Magistrate in 1673. Richard died on Nantucket on January 23, 1688. Sarah died there in 1724. They had ten children, one being Nathaniel. Nathaniel Gardner was born on November 16, 1669 on Nantucket. He married Abigail Coffin (daughter of James Coffin and Mary Severance) in 1685. Abigail was born on Nantucket in 1670. Nathaniel was a seaman who died in England in 1713. Abigail died on Nantucket on May 15, 1709. They had nine children, one of which was Abel. Abel Gardner was born on Nantucket on August 6, 1702. He married Priscilla Coffin [daughter of James Coffin (also father of Abigail Coffin above) and Ruth Gardner, his second wife)]. Priscilla was born June 3, 1708 and died April 27, 1792. Abel died September 11, 1771. They had twelve children, one of which was my Nathaniel... and off we go again. From the Nathaniel of Pittsylvania County I am certain but before that I am not sure of anything... any ideas? 3. I am confused! Maybe I don't have the information correct, but maybe we are looking at two different George's??? Are you referring to George, son of Thomas (Salem/Nantucket Gardners)?? The information I have is he arrived in American in 1624. The earliest mention of George Gardner in the Town Records of Salem, Ma. is under the date of the 8th of the 9th month 1637 at which time he was granted ten acres of land. He became a member of the First Church in Salem in 1641 (First Church Records). This being the case, he would not have married in London in 1630. I haven't come across the mention of the two "common law" wives before. I found them on the internet, but what I'm not sure is if this George is Thomas' son. This whole Nantucket Gardner family has had me in a fit for years!! Liz Gordon Grant Lane wrote: > It appears that George had a lot of wives, both ones he married and common law.
