The Picts were in Scotland, as early as the time of the Romans and Hadrian's Wall. The Irish (called "Scots", Latin "Scotti") invaded Scotland, I think (don't quote me!) about 800 or 900 AD. The Picts and the Scots were united under Kenneth McAlpin about the turn of the millenium (ditto don't quote me on the details). My GARDNER ancestors arrived in New England from Scotland in 1773, settling in Ryegate, Vermont. The county in which they put down their new roots is named Caledonia (the old name for Scotland) from all the Scots in Ryegate, Barnet, and the nearby towns in Vermont. So here is yet *another* "New England GARDNER line". Darrell Darrell A. Martin working from web-based Earthlink mail darrellm@sprynet.com
Well the connection is close if you consider 1,000 years close. But in DNA language, I guess that's close. We NC Gardners had to come from somewhere unless we popped out of the ground like the Picts did when Ireland was first invaded, giving a basis to the tale of the Leprechaun. The street they are on is Temple Avenue, no house number. They were at Dwelling #303, Family #339, City Ward 3, Enumeration District No. 5, . Date was 15 April 1910. The page number handwritten by the enumerator was 14; the stamped number on the page was 183A. Number of years of present marriage for Elijah and Elizabeth is 19. I finally deciphered that Avalon Borough was Enumeration District 337 under "Other Townships" in Allegheny Co. It was 43 pages long. I quickly looked through there and did not find any GARDNERs (even with spelling variations). ---------------------------------------------------------------- Mary Doty GenBrickWalls@msn.com ----- Original Message ----- From: "Pete Apple" <pete@intcomm.net> To: <GARDNER-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, January 17, 2003 12:02 PM Subject: [GARDNER] Elijah GARDNER > Does anyone have access to 1900 or 1910 Census Index for Allegheny County (Pittsburgh) PA? Elijah Gardner married Elizabeth (Clouse?) in 1891 or 1892 - Probably in Alleghney County. I would like to find a record of that marriage to verify her last name. Does anyone have access to those records for the county? Thanks for your help. Pete Apple

Maybe this is why someone recently said Jasper Gardner's name is not on the ship register he is said to have arrived on. Is there a Gaspar Guerurer on that ship's list? I was once told the original immigrant was a Jasper Gardner, born about 1675 in Scotland or France. Also, that he came to America in 1700 with an unknown wife, 3 children and a group of Huguenots aboard the French ship "The Peter and Anthony" landing 20 Sept 1700 along the James River in VA. Further, that he had a son Jean Gardner born 1696 who married Mary Pryor. I sought to verify this for myself, since the source was only an email from someone without additional documentation. At the Olive Tree Genealogy site I found a list of Huguenot ships including the Peter and Anthony. Look for yourself: http://olivetreegenealogy.com/ships/hugship02.shtml. Then tell me which one is Jasper Gardner. Then find where he changed his name and was living with a son, Jean, etc. I've been to the James River, and it would be nice to have an ancestor who landed in such a lovely place. But, I suggest it is better to be suspicious until better evidence is found. Barbara

EXECUTIONS IN AMERICA http://users.bestweb.net/~rg/execution.htm There are Gardner executions contained in these lists.
I have been watching this list for over a year, hoping to see something to link my fathers to his mysterious past. My father actually worked in the Government, so I figured his background check must have revealed nothing too terrible. Looking for information on: David Gardner b: abt 1848 (possibly Ohio) d: 1900 Duluth, MN he married Mary Jane Avery daughter of Christopher Jenkins Avery and Polly Fairchild. They had 2 children: Elmer Avery b: abt 1883 and Grace Emeline b: 1885 (both born in New York). OK, because of the 1920 and 1930 Census availability, I have knocked down an entire brick wall only to find an even thicker brick wall. This is my revelation: My Grandfather Elmer Avery Gardner (born Abt 1883 in New York, died 9/7/1935 in Minneapolis, Minnesota) Elmer worked for the Post Office in Minneapolis. He married Evelyn Montgomery (from Brewster, Minnesota) between 1907 and 1910. They had 3 boys in Minnesota (LeRoy Frances - my father, born 6/24/1910, Lloyd E. - born Abt. 1912 and David - born about 1914). Soon after David's birth, Evelyn disappeared (or ran away), leaving the kids with Elmer, who put them in an orphanage until he could figure a way to provide for them. I believe I find a match in the 1920 Census for Montana, a record of an Elizabeth Montgomery (widow) without a job, living independently. My logic is that she was overwhelmed with the obligations of children and chose to walk out. The Railroad industry would have provided an excellent opportunity to provide distance from what she was trying to flee. At the time, the railroad would have taken her to Billings (and even further, could she afford it). A story I heard from my mother, was that my father traced and tracked her to St. Louis, Missouri. When he got there, the proprietor of the boarding house (he tracked her to) told him to go home and never look back. That may be the reason he would never talk about his heritage. The importance here, is that Elmer had a sister named Grace, which (as of the 1801 Census) I now find living with her uncle George Washington Avery (in Minneapolis, Minnesota) in 1900 (the same year that David (their father) had died). I met Grace as a child, but yet to know the significance of this family as it pertains to me. Any information would be gratefully appreciated............
