Bill, Much of the 1890 census was destroyed. There seem to be a few items that survived, but mostly people have to use other sources to hunt for clues during this period. Do you have any idea of where your William got married or where he died? Census listing go by counties. Also, Rootsweb has county mailing lists that you could join and people that have ancestors in that county could possibly help you. Good luck on your quest! I hope someone else connects with your Gardners. :) - Jean Griesan > ---------- > From: William Horten[SMTP:[email protected]] > Reply To: [email protected] > Sent: Friday, March 30, 2001 1:16 AM > To: [email protected] > Subject: [GARDNER] Baltimore City /1900/GARDNER > > The Gardner Family of Maryland > > I am looking for the 1890 Census records of ancestor William H. The Gardner Family of Maryland I am looking for the 1890 Census records of ancestor William H. Gardner who married Elizabeth Metz Gardner on May 5, 1887. They had three children - Charles H. Gardner died on August 14, 1899 and his widow Elizabeth and children are probably listed in the 1900 and succeeding Censuses. I anyone can look for these relatives, I would appreciate it. Since William's mother Mary Bowen Custis Gardner was born in 1837 in Worcestor County, William may have lived in Worcestor County, Maryland or Hanover in York County, Pennsylvania near his half sister Julia Ann (Annie) Custis Gallagher, or near his mother at 903 E. Hoffman Street in Baltimore. I am grateful for those that check in all these areas. Thanks so much, Bill Horten San Diego, CA [email protected]

I once wrote a biography of a nineteenth century musical comedy star and in my research found out that she and her sisters had swapped names in their teens and were actually buried under one another's names. Charles, The beauty of genealogy is that we learn facts and apply hypotheses. When we get more information, we rethink the hypothesis, etc., etc. I bet finding out that your Isabella was a niece rather than child of Isabella Stewart Gardner was just as exciting. I had erroneously written that the Isabella Gardner who married Allen Tate and lived in Minneapolis was the daughter of Isabella Stewart Gardner. The appended FYI catches my error. In truth, Isabella Stewart Gardner Tate was the *niece* of the earlier Isabella Stewart Gardner. She died in New York City in July of 1981 at the age of 65. Hope I've redeemed myself somewhat. Hello, According to my greataunt I have an ancester, Isabella (Isabel) Gardner, who married John Mosman, probably in the early 1620's. Don't know where they were from but their son James Mosman was of Roxbury, Wrentham and Dedham. Anyone know if this Isabella may have been an ancestor of Isabella Stewart Gardner? Or does anyone know anything about this Isabella? Thanks. Barbara

I must do some homework, I obviously have been working under an erroneous assumption in thinking Isabella Gardner Tate was the daughter of Isabella Stewart Gardner. CN
I am searching for information on Henry Gardner, Bibb County, Alabama. Henry was married to Myrtle Briles. He died in the early 1920's. This is all that I have on him. I would appreciate any information on him. Thanks for your help. Vickie Gardner
FYI Isabella Stewart Gardner (the famous Bostonian) and her husband John Lowell Gardner Jr. had only one child who died at the age of 20 months therefore they have no descendants. For more information go to the web site below. http://www.boston.com/gardner/faq.htm

The subject, a popular socialite of Boston, is a > trustee of the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum. ================= Susan, This is just a little story. I'm not related to the Boston Gardners, but from 1968-70 I rented a house from Isabella Gardner (Tate) in Minneapolis. This younger Isabella was the daughter of the renowned Boston Isabella. A poet, she had married Allen Tate, at the time one of the most noted poets and critics in the United States and a professor at the University of Minnesota. When they divorced she rented her house, which she could not bear to give up, to a young poet friend of hers and mine, Roland Flint, and when he moved on to Georgetown University she rented to me. She died in the 1970s. Last fall I was in Boston and by chance came across the Gardner family mausoleum while visiting a Boston cemetery with my son. Two older women came along and let themselves into the mausoleum. Both were near replicas of the younger Isabella Gardner Tate so I suppose they were sisters or cousins. It was a nice coincidence. If there is a point to this I suppose it's that genealogy groups turn up surprising connections beyond the family connections we all look for. My Gardners are all southern and, in truth, I hadn't thought of Isabella as a Gardner for some years, certainly not as a relative--which of course she wasn't. Charles Norman
Hi Mike, According to the 1850 census for Derby, Orleans Co., Vt. Samuel was 22, so he would have been born around 1828. Hi all! I am looking for information on Judson Gardner. He was born 27 January 1834 in Lawrence County, Ohio to Thomas and Chloe Gardner. He married Frances Hall in 1857 in Lawrence County. He and his wife appear in the 1860 census in Lawrence County. He seems to be gone by 1870. I suspect that he moved west to find his fame or fortune. Ancestry.com shows his name under the Missouri Census, but I'm too cheap to subscribe. Does anyone happen to know where he went after he left Lawrence County? Thanks for you time and patience. - Jean Griesan
Hi Lynda, Yes, I am looking in the early 1800's for, right now, George, Russell, Franklin, Samuel, and Calvin. All of these Gardner's are in the Orleans County area, (Derby, Morgan). Hello I find interesting similarities in our Gardner /Farr families. I would appreciaye hearing from you. chloe [email protected]
Ran across an interesting article in my local paper...Methow Valley News, Okanogan Co., WA... Item taken from a book "Isabella Stewart Gardner and Penway Court" by Morris Carter, published 1925. The subject, a popular socialite of Boston, is a trustee of the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum. "On July 17th 1891, Mrs. Gardner's father died and she inherited about $2,750,000...that autumn a classmate of her younger brother Joseph Gardner, Mr. Guy Waring, named the highest peak in the vicinity of Winthrop, Okanogan County, Washington, Mount Gardner, and a beautiful range ...he named the Isabella Range. The name Mount Gardner has been officially recognized, but the Isabellas have never been officially surveyed and the name, even locally, is used only by a few." Also mentioned in the book, that Mrs. Gardner was a baseball fan. I don't have any additional information, but thought if this item fit someone's family, I would love to hear from them.
