    1. Migration stories (<? >NC) - Re: [GARDNER] NC GARDNER - Generations Removed

    3. Marilynn, I like the stories of the life choices of our ancestors, leading us to where we are today. Can you tell us when and why yours migrated to NC and where they came from and why? Were they Quakers in the 1700s? I wonder what signs are left in NC of the migration of Quakers from Nantucket to NC. What is the oldest headstone that you have seen of Gardner in NC? 3. My great grandfather was Henry Gardner. He was married to Anna Kaumanns. They were living in Hamilton,Ohio in 1880. The census records show him being born in KY and that both his parents were born in Germany. He was 31 when the census was taken so he must have been born in 1849. Does this ring a bell to anyone? Isn't it true that the information that we provide in these messages remains available in the archives to be researched for years? I am currently contacting people who wrote rootsweb messages a year or two ago regarding the westward journey of our ancestors. It seems, the more details of data that we provide in these messages (especially names and dates and places) the better. _____ Seanette Blaylock wrote: > Hi there! > > westlund wrote: > > Teri.......MA as in Maine or Massachusetts. 3. Gee, I wish we could jump the brick wall of the Atlantic and find some solid data on Gardner ancestors there. Thomas Gardner and Elizabeth White are suspected of being the parents of the 1624 Immigrant, Thomas Gardner, "The Planter" He was commissioned to go help establish the colony at Cape Ann. It seems that there would be some record of that somewhere in England. How do one find it? 3. Muriah asks the line of migration of my Gardner family. Showed up here in the 1770s and never left. Oh, some leaked over into SC. Had two great-grands and a great-great in the War between the States. I have so many cousins here, I can't count them. Others ask about limiting this to Southern Gardners. I am opening a big enough can of worms as it is. WE'll get to the others later. Now, I suggest we each choose a given name and collect every southern Gardner we are sent with that given name and see if we can untangle said can of worms. I will take "William" as he is my first known ancestor in the family. Somebody offered to take John. Someone else take James, Lewis, Jeremiah, Thomas, etc. I will collect all of the William Gardners went to me who first show up in Va. and all points southof min. A great-great uncle, DAvid, went to Miss. That much I know. I will then try to put them into some kind of order because often I hear from someone looking for a certain Gardner who is not one of mine and I haven't saved other messages that would have provided connections. 1. Indiana Migration Stories - Re: [GARDNER] Indiana Gardners
    2. muriah
    3. Mary, For many, Indiana was a gathering place and point of departure for the westward movement, most notably that of the Oregon Trail. In my family, James Gardner, Sr who was born in Deep River, Gilford, NC 4 May 1776 and his wife Elizabeth Starbuck of Nantucket moved to Wayne County Indiana with their family where he died 11 Mar 1825 and she died there 26 Jan 1865. Their son, John Lucian Gardner, born 1805 at Deep River, NC married at Wayne County Indiana on 3 Oct 1825 with Margaret Harris. They had their son Benjamin in Iowa 21 Dec 1846 and then in early 1850s they and their family joined the movement westward on the Oregon Trail I am told that these Gardner families may have fled northward from NC because of Quaker response to the social and political issues of the south and westward because of an epidemic movement. It seems that I have seen maps showing migration paths from the Carolina area northwesterly, splitting with one path to Iowa and the other to Indiana. It seems that some of my Gardners must have split up, going both directions.
