Ritchie makes reference to a wife of Sam Hamby of the Whetstone Community over in SC, and the fact that she is the sister of Sexton White of Rabun Co. (pp 112). This Sam Hamby is Samuel Johnson Hamby, b 25 June 1870, and she is Lela White b 7 Jan, 1881, Sam's second wife. There is an entry in the 1900 Rabun Co. census for a household headed by William C Speed, Age 43 (ie b abt 1857) and wife Katherine K. I know nothing of their background. But their children are listed as: Lula 19 (b c 1881) Sexton 17 Jane 13 Jenetta 9 Tabitha 7 Elizabeth 4 Jesse 2 Essie 2. In a November, 1915, court case the following are listed as heirs of Kalvin Speed: John Speed Andrew Speed Peter Speed Kalvin Speed, Jr. Sexton White* Nettie White* Tabitha W Hamby* George White* Logan White* and Heirs at law of Leila Hamby.* Those with the asterisk* were earlier known as Speeds and now later as Whites. Can someone explain this ? mel cox
