Recently it has come to the attention of the GGS that some way is needed for persons working on abstraction and transcription projects to know what others may be working on. The problem came to light recently when the GGS learned that a person had almost completed abstracting a Georgia county's marriage records only to find that publication of the same material was imminent. You can appreciate how devastating this kind of situation can be to someone who has worked many hard hours to complete a project. The GGS has agreed to become a clearinghouse for genealogical works in progress. The new project, called Registry of Georgia Genealogical Works in Progress, is housed on the GGS website. The Registry includes a form for submitting information on projects that are underway, as well as a list of works that are proposed or in progress. The registry can be used to alert fellow researchers whether the projects are intended for traditional paper publication and sale, or for internet publication at sites such as U. S. GenWeb. The url is http://www.gagensociety.org/projects_registry.htm. We need your help to spread the word among fellow researchers. Please send this message to everyone on your mailing list, as well as anyone else you think might be interested. Post information on your website. Let researchers know that they can check at the GGS website before they begin an abstraction project. Thank you for your help in launching this new project, which we believe will be of value to all Georgia genealogists. If you have questions, please let me know.
