I was recently made aware of a web site which is selling access to genealogical records placed in the digital archives of the USGenWeb Project. The site, familydiscovery.com, charges between $19.95 and $49.95, depending on the subscription type. The records placed in the digital archives are copyrighted by the contributors, none of whom, as far as I know, have given permission to familydiscovery.com to use or sell these records. As many of you already know, the USGenWeb Project is dedicated to providing free access to these records. It is, at the very least, highly unethical to sell copyrighted material or to charge a fee for access to copyrighted material and I know many, many people who are highly upset by the actions of those involved with familydiscovery.com. If you know of someone who has a subscription to familydiscovery.com, please ask them to cancel their subscription and stop using that site. All of the records there can be accessed, free of charge, through the USGenWeb Project, the American Local History Network and other sites which are readily and easily available to even the most inexpert computer user.
