Updates to the Rabun Co., GAGenWeb site: We're coming up on the 2000 reunion season, so if anyone would like to list their reunions online, please let me know. Currently, we have one reunion on our new reunion page: http://www.rootsweb.com/~garabun/rabreu.html Also, could we do a surname check for everyone on the mailing list? I'd like to add all your names (and surnames!) to our new surname researchers' page. And, if anyone has family web sites that I don't have listed on the links page, please let me know so that I can add them in. Is anyone interested in writing mini-histories about Rabun Co. to place online? What about biographies of early pioneers? Contact me for further information. As always, comments and suggestions are welcome, as are volunteers! Dawn W. Cabe CC/Rabun Co., GAGenWeb http://www.rootsweb.com/~garabun/ My Rabun Co. surnames: Martin, Hopper, Garland, Darnell, Ritchie, Callenback, Carver, Grist

From: "Wylene Alston" <wylenel@aol.com> I am Wylene Alston of Winnie, TX. I do genealogy and have ancestors, Samuel and Catherine (Wetzel) Hefner that were in Rabun Co. Gaines, Daniel Duncan, Thomas Capehart, Jacob Crone, Woodson Worley, John O. Jourdin, Lewis N. Jones, Ephraim Hefner, Alfred Price, Susan Kelly, Eliza Hefner, Susan Jones, Jer. Webb, John Cuner, Alford Price. Edward Coffee. Some of their descendants may still live in the area. Children of Samuel and Catherine (Wetzel) Hefner that remained in Rabun Co., were Susan Hefner b. 1807 in Buncombe Co., NC, she married Thomas "Red" Kelly. Another daughter was Nancy Hefner b. 1813 in Buncombe Co., NC, she married Horace W. Cannon. Two of Samuel and Catherine Hefner sons, George and Levi Hefner married sisters, Clarissa and Lovicy Jones. George died soon, and Levi was found in 1850 in Cass Co., GA. Living with or next to him was Clarissa Jones, the widow of George Hefner, and sister to Levi's wife. These people later moved on to AR. If anyone has more information on any of these people I would love to hear about it. - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe from this group, send an email to: RabunCountyGa-unsubscribe@onelist.com
The following query was placed today. Can anyone help Mr. Slay gather this information? >>>>> NAME: David Slay EMAIL: d1861@aol.com DATE: Apr 06 2000 URL: http:// QRYTEXT: Greetings: I am compiling information for a book entitled: "Bibliography of Civil War Manuscripts in the state of Georgia." This book will list and briefly describe all Civil War manuscript collections held by organizations in this state. Due to the large number of such organizations, I cannot visit them all. I need a couple of volunteers to help me with Rabun County. The task involves visiting or calling the Rabun County Library and historical society to check and see if they have any unpublished Civil War era letters or diaries. After that a brief description of the item is all I need. In most cases this entire process can be completed in an hour or two. All volunteers will be credited for their work in the foreword of the book. This work will be of great importance to historians and genealogist all across the nation. If you would like to help me, please contact me. David Slay d1861@aol.com >>>>> Sincerely, Dawn Watson Cabe CC/Rabun Co., GAGenWeb http://www.rootsweb.com/~garabun/

There will be a revision of the Old Pendleton Database cd in early April. Mailings are planned for 15 April and end of April. This database now contains over 250,000 interconnected names of those once living in the 3 westernmost SC counties (and adjacent area in NC, SC and GA), their ancestors and descendents. A map of this area can be found at http://www.shelby.net/jr/olpend/opd.jpg The descendents are shown to have found their way to most states. Further info about ordering this cd may be found at http://www.shelby.net/jr/olpend/
New to Rabun Co., GAGenWeb's Revolutionary War page: Revolutionary War Veterans who participated in the Georgia Land Lotteries URL: http://www.rootsweb.com/~garabun/revwar/rwgll.html The list is limited to soldiers who lived in Rabun Co. or drew lots in Rabun Co. and is cross-referenced (as best I could) against the 1830 census for Rabun Co. Woohoo! We now know of 20 Revolutionary War Veterans who later lived in Rabun Co., thanks to the land lottery records. We still need information on many of these men and their families. In fact, our Biographies Board is empty, so gather up your facts and submit them there. If you feel uncomfortable writing everything up, let me know and I'll find someone who can help. The most important thing (and I can't emphasize this enough) is that we make the information available. I'm not sure if I let y'all know or not, but I finally sent the 1830 and 1840 censuses for Rabun Co. to a proof reader. After losing one volunteer twice and losing the name and address of another volunteer when we switched computers, I had just about given up hope of getting them online. Hopefully, they will be up within the next couple of months. As always, comments, suggestions and volunteers are welcome. Dawn W. Cabe CC/Rabun Co., GAGenWeb http://www.rootsweb.com/~garabun/

In the past few months we've added many features to the Rabun Co., GAGenWeb site. The entire suite of GenConnect boards can now be accessed from the main page and include boards for Bible Records, Biographies, Deeds, Obituaries, Pensions and Wills. Please remember that these boards are not for queries; they are there to allow any researcher to place records online without having to go through the Archives (although we would also like for those records to be placed in the Archives). To place a query, please visit the query board, which may also be accessed from the main page (http://www.rootsweb.com/~garabun/). Many thanks to Cindy Chandler for sending that list of churches in. They're online and can be viewed at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~garabun/churches.html Also, I'm working on a surname researcher page. I've taken some names from the migration and ACW pages, but not from the queries. If you have one or more surnames that you're researching in Rabun County and would like to be placed on the surname researcher page, please let me know. http://www.rootsweb.com/~garabun/rabsur.html Sincerely, Dawn W. The Old Pendleton District (SC) Database CD for January 2000 is now (finally!) available. All current orders are in the mail or will be Monday. This cd is a project of the OPD Chapter of the SC Gen Society. Rootsweb is aware of the project and has given approval of its occasional announcement on lists where it is relevant. The database currently contains 244,000 inter-related names of those who lived in the western-most 3 counties of SC, and their ancestors and descendents. Most states and a number of countries are included in its thousands of listed locations. This version of the cd will be immediately available thru February. The next expected revision of the cd will be for the April revision of the gedcom. The low-cost cd is offered to support continued contribution of data to the already huge database, as it becomes increasingly inconvenient for many to download/import it. The download/import access is still within the reach of many. Currently, it is essentially impossible to import the gedcom in FTM using other than WinNT. Usable FTM databases are provided for FTM 5, 6 and 7, and for a number of other popular genealogy programs. Full details may be seen at http://www.shelby.net/jr/olpend/ (hit reload/refresh to be sure you're seeing the current webpage revised 1/23/2000).
