We've been working on the BURRELL family that my husband descends from and recently had word that there was a possible sibling to his grandmother, Amy Drucilla Burrell English, named DECATUR that lived on Betty's Creek, Rabun Co., GA. I have found a Decatur, son of Andrew Elijah and grandson of Center BURRELL living in that area, but hardly think this can be the man we are looking for as the following would seem to apply to our lines: 1 George Burrell b: Abt. 1829 in State of North Carolina .. +Mary E. Gaines b: 1829 in State of Georgia m: 03 March 1853 in Rabun Co., GA ......... 2 Amy Drucilla Burrell b: 06 February 1854 in State of Georgia d: 13 June 1911 in Rabun Co., GA ............. +William Jasper English b: 06 January 1855 in Rabun Co., GA d: 16 July 1932 in Rabun Co., GA m: 28 February 1877 in Rabun Co., GA ......... 2 Hiram Burrell b: Abt. 1857 ............. +Margaret "Molly" Taylor m: 03 March 1877 in Rabun Co., GA ......... 2 Martha Burrell b: Abt. 1860 ............. +Daniel Hollifield Does anyone have information on the possibility of ANOTHER Decatur BURRELL living on Betty's Creek, possibly older than this son of Andrew Elijah's? I was recently made aware of a web site which is selling access to genealogical records placed in the digital archives of the USGenWeb Project. The site, familydiscovery.com, charges between $19.95 and $49.95, depending on the subscription type. The records placed in the digital archives are copyrighted by the contributors, none of whom, as far as I know, have given permission to familydiscovery.com to use or sell these records. As many of you already know, the USGenWeb Project is dedicated to providing free access to these records. It is, at the very least, highly unethical to sell copyrighted material or to charge a fee for access to copyrighted material and I know many, many people who are highly upset by the actions of those involved with familydiscovery.com. If you know of someone who has a subscription to familydiscovery.com, please ask them to cancel their subscription and stop using that site. All of the records there can be accessed, free of charge, through the USGenWeb Project, the American Local History Network and other sites which are readily and easily available to even the most inexpert computer user. Sincerely, Dawn W. Cabe CC/Rabun Co., GAGenWeb http://www.rootsweb.com/~garabun/
As of about 10 am Monday morning, these are the people who have requested look ups: Paul Eichling: Bramlet family Nancy Lehto: Blackwell/Powell/Speed Shirley Edwards: Roper/Rickman Cindy Chandler: Wilbanks/Smith/Pointer Patty Brock: Pack Charles: Smith/Hunnicutt Tom Cobb: Crowe/Cobb Gayle Garrett: Garrett/Daniels Steve Hutson: Hutson/Dickerson Claire: McCoy If you sent a look up request before 10 am on 9/25/00 but are not mentioned above, please contact me asap. Now, there are three things I would like to mention. First, some records cannot be copied. The deeds, for instance, before a certain time period cannot be photocopied from the books (I know everything before about 1880-1900 cannot be photocopied). They must be hand-copied. Most likely, for the records that cannot be copied, I will abstract them. Secondly, some look up requests were fairly extensive and the copying costs could become expensive on my part (although everyone has offered to reimburse me for such expenses). So I'll decide on a case by case basis whether to make copies or gather the information needed so that the record(s) can be ordered. I know that y'all want information as soon as possible, so I'll at least transcribe the basic information and let you know how or if additional information may be obtained. Last, but not least, since so many people have requested look ups I may not have time to get through my entire list on Tuesday. So, to be fair, I'm filling the requests in the order I received them (which is not necessarily the order listed above). If I don't get to you tomorrow, don't worry. I'm planning to return to the courthouse on Thursday, depending on how well my son does at the babysitter. Rest assured that I will do my best by each of you. If anyone has questions or would like to clarify their look up request, please let me know. Thanks, Dawn W. Cabe CC/Rabun Co., GAGenWeb http://www.rootsweb.com/~garabun/
Dawn: I would love divorce dates, and even copies of all documents on the two divorces of my parents, William Thomas Kelly and Linda Ellen Means Kelly. Their first marriage was 08/09/57, with their first divorce somewhere in '69, '70 or '71, and their second divorce somewhere around '70, '71 or '72. Will be glad to reimburse for copies. Any help appreciated. My maternal grandmother gave me a family tree of both her and my maternal grandfather's families. Some of the oldes entries are births in the 1840's, and a couple back to 17?? Before the 1920's they were in eastern North Carolina and I haven't had time to look that far afield. Any sites you know of for that area? Catherine Kelly Parker
I am going to the Rabun County courthouse on Tuesday, September 26. If anyone needs any look ups done while I'm there, please e-mail me no later than Monday evening. Please be specific when requesting information. Gayle Garrett: do you still need a look up done on the Garrett/Daniels marriage? Sincerely, Dawn Watson Cabe CC/Rabun Co., GAGenWeb http://www.rootsweb.com/~garabun/

I need Help: I am trying to locate where & when my great great parents, Elisha Garrett & Caroline Daniels were married, & any other information the two individuals & their families. Caroline could have possibly used the name Asley Daniels. I have reason to believe they were married in Rabun Co., Georgia in the 1860s. They had been Living in both Union & Fannin Counties in the 1850s & 1860s. Gone from these counties by 1970. Any information or suggestions are very much appreciated. Thank You Gayle M. Garrett
I have a lot of info on the Rabun County PARKER line. If anyone is interested, will be glad to share. Sandra Parker Chamblee
There will be a revision of the Old Pendleton District SC Database cd in September. All open requests will be filled at that time. This is a project of the OPD Chapter of the SCGS. Additions are made continually. Downloads are updated monthly. The cd is currently revised about twice a year, dependent upon demand. OPD consisted of the three westernmost counties of SC, so was adjacent to a dozen modern SC, NC and GA counties. Map of the surrounding area showing modern counties in all 3 states: http://jrshelby.com/opdcd/opd.jpg For an excellent map of the district when it *was* a district see the SCROOTS 1820 Mills Atlas map at http://scroots.org/1825pendleton2.html or for a larger, clearer but slower loading version: http://scroots.org/1825pendleton3.html As of August, the database contained 275,000 names (ancestors, residents, descendents) and 93,000 marriages, and almost all of these are cousins somehow. For more info about the downloadable database, OPDC/SCGS, and the cd, see http://jrshelby.com/opdcd/ Note: this is a new address.

Hi, everyone! As many of you may already know, I'm trying to get information online about the early settlers of Rabun County. There are a ton of new researchers out there who don't have immediate access to the records here in Rabun County, so this would be a great way to help them out while making contact with other researchers at the same time. These are two of the primary goals that we're trying to meet through the USGenWeb Project, but I need volunteers to step forward who are willing to share their time, knowledge and expertise. We have an almost brand new, but nearly empty, biographies board on the Rabun Co., GAGenWeb site that is just begging to be filled with biographical sketches. If you don't feel confident in your ability to write anything detailed or complicated, don't worry...help is available! Alternatively, if you would like to share a 3 or 4 generation descendancy chart on your earliest Rabun County ancestor, that would also be great. Right now I'm working on getting the third Rabun County marriage book transcribed to be placed online (Marian, I haven't forgotten about your Wall corrections). I know there are others out there working on these records, too, which we all appreciate. In the meantime, suggestions, comments and criticisms are all welcome. If y'all can think of a way that we can make this site better, please don't hesitate to let us know. My thanks, Dawn W. Cabe CC/Rabun Co., GAGenWeb http://www.rootsweb.com/~garabun/
Nancy: Thought this information (or lack thereof) could be useful to other researchers. I could not find Joseph M. Blackwell on the 1850 or 1870 census for Rabun County. Have you tried the surrounding counties, possibly Oconee/Pickens Co., SC? Terrell Speed did not buy or sell land between 1821 and 1940. Some Speeds who bought and sold land up to about 1900 include: W. C. (William C.), Peter, Andrew, Calvin, John and Alpha. Have you tried the Archives in Atlanta for a land grant? I'm sorry I couldn't be of more help. Dawn Cabe CC/Rabun Co., GAGenWeb http://www.rootsweb.com/~garabun/
Would someone who has the Rabun Co censuses for 1850 and 1870 see if Joseph M. Blackwell is listed on them. I found the family on the 1850 census but need to find them before and after that. Thank you in advance. Nancy Lehto
Many thanks to all of you for your patience while we moved from Fayetteville, NC back to Rabun County. We still aren't settled in yet (it's a REALLY long story) but I finally found a way to connect to the Internet so I could add everyone's information to the site. I apologize profusely for the long delay and hope that said delay hasn't inconvenienced anyone too much. Since we are in Rabun County, I can do LIMITED look-ups at the courthouse for those of you who need some help. Please be specific with what you need, and brief. I cannot at this time copy records and mail them but I will be more than happy to let you know how to order records from the courthouse should you need hard copies. Once again, my sincere apologies for the long delay in getting the site updated. Dawn Watson Cabe CC/Rabun Co., GAGenWeb http://www.rootsweb.com/~garabun/

I'm still trying to locate information on John E. & Florida Coffee. John E. is my ggrandfather, son of Jesse Leonard Coffee. I have not been able to locate a surname for Florida yet. They were living next to Jesse Leonard in the 1880 Census of Persimmon District, Rabun Co. If anyone has any information on Florida, I would certainly appreciate it. Thanks. Lavada "Coffee" Brooks
