The BMD Project (Birth, Marriage, Death) is just getting started. This is a site where you, the researcher, can contribute information about your ancestors from various sources. Georgia is one of the trial states. The main page of the site can be found at: http://bmdproject.rootsweb.com/index.shtml Also, the National Archives has revamped its site and moved the page for ordering forms to: http://www.nara.gov/research/ordering/ordrfrms.html This includes forms for ordering census records, military records and other documents held within the National Archives.
I went to the revamped National Archives research/ordering forms and all I got was a blank blue page. I'm new to the Rabun List. I am researching Free's, Garland, and Woodall from Rabun County, Ga. My ggreat grandfather was Simeon Free, born abt. 1813 in Pendleton District, Anderson, SC. He was married to Margaret Garland, daughter of Daniel Garland and Mary Elizabeth"Polly Ann" Grange. Their son Jesse Lafayette "Fate" Free was my great grandfather. One of Fate's son's was well known for his moonshining, Simmie Free. He was written about in Foxfire book #3. Also researching Woodall's. My great grandmother was Hannah Amanda Woodall, born June 3, 1856 daughter of Rev. Joseph Taylor Woodall and Elizabeth Watkins. She married David Squire Parker. Any information on these families would be greatly appreciated. Sue kmsue@juno.com
Hello, everyone I am new to your list and looking for some help. Today, after reviewing the 1880 Rabun County census for Soundex code P624 (Presley) I noticed a listing for a young boy that might be my kin. My gggrandfather was Jackson Pressley, born about 1833 in NC. He married in 1857 in Henderson Co., NC to Sarah Jane Vess. They are on the 1870 Haywood Co., NC census with four sons. The family appears as follows: Haywood County, NC Upper Pigeon District PRESSLEY Jackson 37 NC Farmer Sarah Jane 30 NC wife Thomas 13 NC son Franklin 11 NC son Montraville 5 NC son Jerallis 2 NC son I haven't located the family on the 1880 census, and I have no further information regarding the last two sons, Montraville and Jerallis. However, on the 1880 Rabun County census, there is a 10 year old boy named Girillas Presley, born NC, enumerated as a servant in the household of Loransa C. Hollifield, in Talhela District (spelling unclear), ED 172, Page 1, Line 3. Does anyone recognize this Loransa Hollifield or this Presley lad? Does someone have the full 1880 Rabun County census who might detail the Hollifield family for me? Is the district "Talhela" a correct spelling? Thanks for any help. I appreciate it! Greetings: I am trying to document whom my great grandfather Benjamin F. Garrett's parent's/siblings were & where. Benjamin is listed in the 1920 Gentry, Arkansas Census as being born in Georgia. His death cert. list his parents as Elisha Garrett & Caroline Daniels. The last place in Georgia that I know the Elisha that I believe as his father was Rabun County. Benjamin was born October 19, 1870. I would also be very interested in the marriage records in the years preceding Benjamin's birth, looking for Elisha Garrett & Caroline Daniels. The ones I have been trying to tie in as Benjamin's parent's are a William "Elisha" Garrett & Asley C. Daniels. I could be way off, I have no documentation on them as his parents. Any information & or suggestions would be very much appreciated. Thank You Gayle M. Garrett garr@ruraltel.net
Happy New Year & Best Wishes To All: I have every reason to believe that William E. Garrett was my great great grandfather, but I need better documentation than I have. My great Grandfather, Benjamin F Garrett listed on his death certificate as born Oct. 19, 1870 in Springtown, Arkansas, Benton County. It also list his parents as Elisha Garrett & Caroline Daniels & both having been from Georgia. William Elisha Garrett built the first cabin in Big Spring, Arkansas, Benton County. He later named it Springtown, Arkansas. In the Union County Georgia Census, in either 1850 or 1860 census he is listed as Elisha Garrett. I find no record of him ever being married to Caroline Daniels in Arkansas, but believe that he was married to a Asley C. Daniels [Caroline] in Union County, Georgia & that she probably died in child birth with my great granddad or from complications shortly after, because William "Elisha" Garrett marries Mary Ellen Culberson April 06, 1871 in Benton County, Arkansas. this was only a few months after Benjamin's birth & at the time William "Elisha" would have been about 39 years old. Col. Samuel Beck recruited a company of 20 men from Rabun Co. to fight in the Florida Indian War. This group enlisted on 5 Oct. 1837 for six months and was discharged on the 7th day of May 1838. They were assigned to Company B, 1st Regiment, 1st Brigade, of the Georgia Mounted Volunteers. I have the names of 8 of these men, including Col. Beck, and would like to identify the others. Those known to have participated were: John Beck (son of Col. Samuel Beck); James Bleckley, Alfred Blalock, Edward Sitton, Jasper Hopper, James Beck (son of Solomon Beck); and William D. Langston. Bounty land was awarded for this service. Can anyone give me the names of others who served with this company? Marian Miller

I have been looking for the parents of Henry Smith - he is my Great Great Grandfather. Henry was born 10/13/1832 most likely in Rabun Co., Ga. He married Elizabeth Dockins. Henry and Elizabeth had the following children: 1. Calvin Cicero (my Great Grandfather) b. 9/2/1849 m. Elizabeth Amelia Justus 2. George L. b. 12/3/1852 m. Arzelia Justus 3. Amanda "Mandy" b. 5/30/1856 m. John Thrift 4. John b. 1865 5. Gus b. 1866 6. Josephine b. 1868 7. Merietta b. 6/5/1869 m. John Pinckeny Harvey 8. Genelia b. 6/5/1871 m. Dennis Smith 9. James "Jim" Henry b. 2/17/1876 m. Ella Samantha Justus 10.Sarah Melvina b. 10/12/1878 Anyway, to get to the Stephen Smith b. 1801 A Family Bible lists all of these individuals and also lists STEPHEN SMITH b. August 31, 1801 then lists MARY SMITH b. Feb. 15, 1801 was married April 5, 1821. This information leads me to believe that Stephen was Henry's father and Mary the mother. I would love to make a connection with someone regarding this information. Thank you. Gail
If you have ancestors from Transylvania Co., you may be interested in this. Last year I with the help of a couple of other very good researchers we created a email list that has become one of the best mailing lists ever. Transylvania Co., NC was in 1791 Buncombe Co. being formed from Burke & Rutherford In 1828--1851 Macon Co. included present-day Hogback & part of Eastatoe Twp of Transylvania Co. In 1838 Henderson Co. was formed from Buncombe In1861--the present day Transylvania County was formed from Jackson & Henderson In just a few weeks our Transylvania County's Internet genealogy group will celebrate its first anniversary. Our TransylvanCoGenList was founded on January 3, 2000 and has quickly grown into Transylvania County's largest, most active research resource. Today, almost a year later, the group has grown to 93 members! If numbers are an indicator of success, then this group is a smash hit. Yesterday, December 14, was a milestone day for this research group. At midday yesterday, the mind boggling 14,000th message was posted on the group's e-mail list since Janaury 3, 2000! Even more important than impressive quantity is the quality of the individual members -- among the nicest and best researchers found anywhere. This unique, privately owned research group was founded to create a warm, nurturing, sharing genealogy community in which information could flow freely between both newcomers to research and seasoned pros. The intentions have been realized many times over. Miraculous discoveries are the norm for this group because of the amazing level of communication and generous sharing. There is no charge for membership and neither is there ever a charge for the information that is shared freely among the members. Commercial, for profit or fee-based research activity is not permitted within the group. TransylvanCoGenList is organized around a central vehicle of communication, its e-mail list. But this is not the typical e-mail list which is very limited in scope and function. The e-mail list is linked to a members-only website and provides an array of support services and member benefits, such as downloadable historical files, stories, articles, and a constantly changing display of historic photographs from across the past of Transylvania County and from most of the old founding pioneer families. Many group members have discovered priceless surviving photos of direct ancestors and other family members through the collection. As an added benefit, the group's e-mail list gladly accepts attachments so that researchers can share large data files with the other members. Most members have made major discoveries through reading these shared files. 14,000 plus pieces of Transylvania County genealogy and history are preserved in the easy to use, searchable archives maintained on the group website as yet another valuable service for the members. The research community functions through fair and simple membership policies and guidelines that are nothing more than good manners and common sense. To preserve the sanctity and well being of this research community, all potential members must agree to abide by these policies before being accepted into the group and must work within our simple lines for continued membership. The group and its very unique approach is not for everyone, but for those wanting the richest and broadest possible experience exploring the past of Transyvlania County and its people, this is the very best resource available. Immediately following the holidays, the members of TransylvanCoGenList will begin a group-wide project to reintroduce themselves to one another as well as reintroduce their ancestors and lines. There's no better time for a new member to come aboard and be on hand for the detailed reintroductions. It's like starting the list all over again and giving everyone a chance to be a part of it all from the beginning. Just to name a few, among the many surnames represented in the group are Aiken, Allison, Anders, Alexander, Ashworth, Allen, Breese, Ashe, Barnett, Batson, Beard, Baird, Barton, Brevard, Bird/Byrd, Bishop, Bagwell, Blythe, Bowen, Bracken, Brown, Bryson, Butler, Burrell, Bowen, Cagle, Cantrell, Chapman, Case, Cooper, Clayton, Conley, Cisoon, Cox, Chastain, Denton, Davis, Davidson, Duckworth, Dunn, Erwin, Essary, Fisher, Freeman, Fletcher, Gash, Galloway, Garren, Gillespie, Glazener, Graveley, Grogan, Hamlin, Henderson, Hightower, Holden, Heath, Hefner, Henry, Hogsed, Johnson, Johnston, Jones, Justice, Justus, Jordan, King, Kitchen, Kilpatrick, Kuykendall, Killian, Lister, Lance, Loftis, Lyday, Mauldin, Mackey, Miller, McCall, McCrary, Mason, McGaha, McMinn, Merrill, Moore, Morgan, Morris, Mull, Neill, Norman, Norton, Nelson, Pettit, Nicholson, Orr, Osteen, Osborne, Owen, Pickelsimer, Phillips, Patton, Paxton, Patterson, Parker, Powell, Pridmore, Raxter, Reese, Sentelle, Siniard, Shipman, Sitton, Smith, Shuford, Summey, Swayingame (and variations), Trammell, Thomas, Tinsley, Underwood, Waters, Woodfin, Wetzel, Whitmire, Wilson, Wood, Young, and many, many others. Sorry we left out anyone! Too many to remember them all! For more information about membership, please write to the administrators or TransylvanCoGenList at <TransylvanCoGenListowner@egroups.com> Your brief application for membership takes only a few moments. Please note: TransylvanCoGenList is a privately owned research resource. Membership is offered and maintained solely at the discretion of the administrators of TransylvanCoGenList." The Old Pendleton District (SC) database has been revised and the cd version will be mailed out by 15 December. All open requests will be filled at that time. This ongoing, longtime effort is that of Herman Geschwin and the Old Pendleton District Chapter of the SCGS. It now contains information on over 296,000 individuals and more than 101,000 families with roots in the Old Pendleton District of South Carolina. OPD shared common borders with many SC, NC and GA counties as may be seen in this map http://jrshelby.com/opdcd/opd.jpg For more info on the cd, see http://jrshelby.com/opdcd/ which provides links to the OPDC/SCGS. I was recently in contact with Robert Brown from the Sumter Co., SC Historical Society, who is trying to contact a lateral descendant of James Albert York, son of William York and Nancy Coffee. Apparently, James was part of the 11th GA Infantry during the War Between the States and was killed in Sumter County. He is buried in a solitary grave in someone's front yard under some azaleas. Mr. Brown has some information on James and would really love to hear from anyone who is researching his parents or his siblings. Please e-mail for information on how to get in touch with Mr. Brown. Hello one and all. I hope everyone had a good Thanksgiving. I wanted to let y'all know that I've been offline since October 1st for personal reasons. I haven't forgotten about ANY of you, so don't despair if you haven't heard from me but were supposed to. Also, if any of you have written since about that time and have not received a reply back, please write again and I will get back in touch with you as soon as I can. I don't have a local ISP right now, so every time I get online, I'm using a long distance number, which can get expensive after a while. So, please have patience with me for a little longer. I NEED HELP! I believe my great great grandfather was William Elisha Garrett B: April 14, 1840 in N.C. Raised in Union CO. Georgia. Was in Union CO. GA. 1850 Census & Fannin County 1860 Census. Served in the Civil War. Moved to Benton Co., Arkansas, Started Springtown, Arkansas, Benton County. His parents James Garrett & Susannah Mashburn. Reason for my believing this is that my great grandfather Benjamin F. Garrett's death certificate listed his parents as Elisha Garrett & Caroline Daniels & that they were both from Georgia. Benjamin was born in Springtown, Arkansas, Benton County on October 19, 1870. I haven't located where, or that William Elisha married Caroline Daniels as of yet William Elisha married Mary Ellen Culberson on April 06, 1871. This would have been several months after Benjamin was born & William would have been about 39 years old at the time. What I believe is that William Elisha married Caroline Daniels (Possibly Asley C. Daniels) first & that possibly she died while giving birth to my great grandfather or from complications shortly after. Any information & or Suggestions would be very much appreciated. Thank You Gayle M. Garrett
Hi List am I the only one that is not getting any mail? Gayle M. Garrett garr@ruraltel.net
Greetings: I need Help! I have a strong hunch about this, it adds up, but I have no proof as yet. How would one get a copy of The Benton Co., Arkansas Atlas of 1903 which carried the history of the William Elisha Garrett family, along with a picture of the family home in 1903-furnished by Mr. Alvin Seamster of Garfield, Arkansas in 1964. All I need is the story about the Benton County Garrett family. I am beginning to believe that William Elisha Garrett, born April 14, 1840 in North Carolina, died December 04, 1910 in Benton County, Arkansas was my great great grandfather. I have reason to believe that his first wife was Caroline Daniels (possibly Asley C. Daniels) both would have been born in Georgia. William Elisha Garrett, son of James Henry Garrett & Susannah Mashburn. William & his parents are on the 1850 Union County, Georgia Census & also on 1860 Census, Fannin Co., Ga. In the 1860 Fannin County Census he is listed as Elisha, not William Elisha & 20 years old & a farmer. William founded Springtown, Arkansas & my great grandfather Benjamin F. Garrett was born in Springtown, Arkansas on October 19, 1870. Also Benjamin married Susan Lewis in Benton Co. ,Arkansas by W. M. Garrett, J. P. All I can document is that William Elisha Garrett b: 14 Apr. 1840 N.C. d: 4 Dec. 1910 Benton Co., Ark. Married 6 Apr. 1871 Benton Co., Ar. to a Mrs. Mary Ellen Culberson Starke. He homesteaded 101 acres of land just north of Springtown in Section 6, Twp. 18 North of Range 32 West in July 1870 (Book H, page 403). Source is The Mashburn Family History Book, of which I was sent a copy of a part with the Union County Garretts. This would have made William 31 years old if this had been his first marriage. Plenty of time for him to have been married first to Caroline/Asley C. Daniels & had a child by the name of Benjamin Franklin Garrett b: October 19, 1870. I have no proof yet. I need to either be able to prove this theory or disapprove it completely. Thank You Gayle M. Garrett <garr@ruraltel.net>
