    1. Reply to Justus Family Inquiry
    2. Crissy, These are not my lines. However, I checked the names in a new book by Susan Lewis Koyle entitled, "Genealogy Extracted from Forest Service Court Cases in Rabun County, Georgia" and found information leading to the following: Caladonia (Smith) Justice was the daughter of Fannie and Ambrose Smith. The marriage records on the Rabun Co. web page include the marriage of Ambrose Smith and Fannie Kerby on 8 Jan. 1852. Fannie Kerby apparently was a widow, as she was head of household in Rabun Co. in 1850 with four children. I didn't find an earlier marriage in Rabun Co. for her. I believe William Justice was the son of L. D. Justice. William's heirs, including Caladonia, were listed as heirs of L. D. Justice in William's behalf. In April 1916, Caladonia and Vadie, Frank, Harrison and Ella (Justice) Smith were all still in Rabun Co. "Keley" Justice, heir of William Justice, was residing in Missoula, Montana. I don't see Palmer Justice in the index. The Forest Service Court Cases were created to clear titles to land the government wanted to acquire for the National Forest. Much of this land had been passed from generation to generation without formal deeds. It was necessary to try to identify and locate every person who could have inherited an interest in each tract of land with an unclear title. These files contain a treasure trove of clues to connections within early Rabun Co. families. A more detailed description of the book can be found at www.heritagebooks.com Marian Miller Date: 05/16/2001 1:48:31 PM Central Daylight Time From:    Cricket070795@gateway.net I am looking for information on Caladonia Smith Justus, daughter of Fannie Smith.  I am also interested in her husband, William Allison Justus, and their children, Lavadia Eller, Ella Samantha Smith Rose, and Kelsey, Frank, Harrison, and Palmer Justus.  All were born in Sinking Mountain in Rabun County.  Thanks!!!                         ~Crissy~

    1. Elisha Garrett & Caroline Daniels
    2. Gayle M. Garrett
    3. I need help, please I still can't document which Caroline Daniels or Elisha Garrett were my great great grandparents & their exact location of birth. My great grandfather Benjamin F. Garrett's death certificate listed his parents as Elisha Garrett & Caroline Daniels & both from Georgia. My grandfather's name was also Elisha Garrett, born March 10, 1893 in Siloam Springs, Arkansas, Benton County. Benjamin's death certificate list him as born October 19, 1870 in Springtown, Arkansas, Benton County, but the 1920 - Gentry, Arkansas Censes No. 326 pg. 13B list him as born in Georgia. I have no proof of either. So I know not whether Elisha Garrett & Caroline Daniels were ever in Benton County, Arkansas for sure. The death certificate was filed by my granddad Elisha Garrett the oldest of several children. Benjamin was living at my granddads place in Rural Trego County, Kansas at the time of his death. I believe that I am a descendant of Joseph Garrett born 1786 in Old Ninty-Six District, South Carolina & died in Pisgah, Gilmer County & Sarah Stroud born 1790 in Burke County, North Carolina died Abt. 1855 in Gilmer County, Georgia. I believe that my Garrett ancestery comes through Union County Georgia & that either Elisha Garrett born 1849 in Union County, Georgia ( I have nothing other than his birth, would like more information on him) or that William Elisha Garrett born April 14, 1840 in North Carolina, resided in Union County & Rabin County, Georgia & Springtown, Arkansas, Benton County at the time of Benjamin's birth. there are a few years here also that I can't account for on William Elisha. There was an Asley C. Daniels born in Union County Georgia that I would like more information on. Also a Caroline Daniels in Tattnall county, Georgia I have quit a bit of information on, but need more. I could be some other Caroline Daniels, but the time of birth of both of these work & often the middle name was used as their name instead of their first. There was a lot of movement at this time from the Union County, Georgia area to the Benton County, Arkansas area. Thank You Gayle M. Garrett <garr@ruraltel.net>

    3. The next quarterly (usually) revision of the Old Pendleton District (SC) Database cd will be mailed on 15 June 2001. All outstanding requests will be filled at that time. The OPD Database is a project of the Old Pendleton District Chapter/SCGS and is based on a single gedcom containing over 300,000 names of those who lived in the OPD (+ancestors+descendants in most states and several countries). The OPD was comprised of the area now occupied by the 3 westernmost counties of SC. Adjacent counties are in GA and NC in addition to SC. See map at http://jrshelby.com/opdcd/opd.jpg To see more about the OPDC/SCGS, see: http://oldpendleton.homestead.com/index.html To see more about the inexpensive OPD database cd, see: http://jrshelby.com/opdcd/ (Revised 4/26/2001) A new option on this revision of the cd is being able to search/view/print the database completely from the cd without copying or installing anything. All the usual options are still available. This cd project had prior approval by Rootsweb before its initiation.

    2. The following e-mails were sent to me; for some reason, the first time I tried posting them to the list, they bounced back. Can anyone help this researcher? >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>. Subj: Hampton Date: 3/6/01 9:56:39 PM Eastern Standard Time From: ksenecha@bloomington.in.us (Karen Senechal) To: booleygirl@aol.com Hi Dawn, I have been researching my family for about a year and a half, and have seen your name many times in my search. I thought I would give a shout, so to speak, and see if you have any info on my family. My gg-grandfather, Turley Hampton, was born in Buncombe Co in 1821, and his brother Tilman born in 1823. They both are on the Buncombe Co census in the mid 1800s, then first Tilman is gone, then later Turley is gone. They both moved to the Cherokee Co, NC area with their families. Turley and his extended family settled near the Harshaw place, near Brasstown. Tilman is found in Union Co, GA, where I think he married Rebecca Leona Cobb, after his first wife, Sarah Shope, must have died. They later moved to MO. Some of the older children of Tilman remained in Cherokee Co. Turley's descendants lived in Cherokee Co, and of course have gradually scattered. My grandad, William Turley Hampton, in 1905 married my grandmother, Mary Edwards, also called Mollie. She was from Rabun Co, near Clayton, and is reported to be half Cherokee or so. The details are obscured. My dad, James Edgar Hampton, was born in about 1920, in Hiawasee, GA. He was raised near Murphy until the age of 6 or so, then his family moved to Gastonia, to work in the cotton mills, and I was born there, and lived until 18, never to live there again. (I don't like it there, once I got away.) I suspect that Tilman and Turley were sons of a younger Micajah Hampton, son of Ahab, who had come from Halifax Co VA by 1800 to Buncombe Co. Others in that family also moved to MO, to several areas, one I've seen mentioned a lot is Saline Co. I suspect that Tilman was moving out to where uncles, cousins, etc, had already gone. I keep finding lots of more details, and am still waiting on the motherlode, to find out Turley's parents for sure, and to find out anything about my grandmother Mary Edwards family. Some cousins think her parents were Bill and Adeline Edwards, from near Clayton. I have not been able to get anywhere on that. I need to come out to Clayton. If this rings any bells, or you have any info, please let me know. I appreciate any info you might have. Thanks, Karen Hampton Senechal >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Subj: Hamptons Date: 3/6/01 10:00:34 PM Eastern Standard Time From: ksenecha@bloomington.in.us (Karen Senechal) To: booleygirl@aol.com More details, my grandad, William Turley, registered for the draft in Towns Co, GA, in about 1918. My grandmother was born about 1884. I remember one of her brothers, we called him Big Jim Edwards. Interestingly, my brother recalls that our dad would take his mother to the Okefeenokee swamp area on occasion, to visit her people, who were alligator hunters and boot leggers. Sound like interesting folk. Wonder if they were Indians, trying to live in obscurity. Thanks, Karen >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Also, with this just starting out volunteers are also going to be needed to act as State Coordinators. As of right now, only 1 state (Georgia) has a CC and only 1 year has been assigned (1919). Everything else is up for grabs, so to speak. All transcriptions will be placed in the archives for storage. Please pass this on to other lists so that the word can get out.
