    2. My g-g-g-grandfather moved to Rabun County in the mid 1820's from NC. There are still a few of the family still in the area and a lot are buried there. I am interested in Gillespie's and related families. Have some info on the family but always open to receive, and pass on, info as it becomes available. Thanks! Tom Gillespie, Jr. Jonesboro, GA

    3. http://www.theclaytontribune.com/ The Clayton Tribune Newspaper is on-line. For "old newspapers".... UGA has lots of newspaper on microfilm http://www.libs.uga.edu/gnp/titlelist.html At the very bottom of the page "Begin Search" These are listed by name of city.... so for Rabun, try Clayton (the county seat) Clayton *Clayton Tribune Jan. 1, 1925-present North Georgia Weekly Press Apr. 6, 1955 But this doesn't cover "olden times" --- does anyone know what large newspaper may have covered Rabun County in the 1880's? I did find: Habersham Co. Clarkesville Advertiser/Clarkesville Advertiser Jan. 4, 1882-Dec. 23, 1884; Apr. 2, 1890-Mar. 14, 1911 Northeast Georgian Dec. 23, 1857 Tri-County Advertiser Apr. 1913-Nov. 5, 1925; Feb. 1926-Mar. 30, 1990 For "look-ups" for Obits, try: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~obitl/ and if you are lucky enough to get an obit, do share it so we can get it on-line for Rabun Co. If anyone has any "old" obits -- newspaper clippings tucked away in someone' s Bible -- please type those up and share. Even if they don't have the date or name of newspaper, or even if you don't know who they might be. It is sure to help someone out!

    3. I'm one of the 132 subscribers. I'm researching Hence Queen who resided Rabun County in 1850 with his wife Nancy YORK and children Jerry and Mary. (In one census transcription, Hence is listed as Spence; however, I believe Hence is the correct name.) My ggrandfather, Hinsey Jonas, was born in 1858 or 1859, and by 1860 widowed Nancy relocated to Cherokee County NC with her 5 children (Jerry, Mary, Harvey, Jane and Jonas). What happened to Hence? Did Nancy move after his demise, or did they relocate to NC as a family. I've searched for many years, but haven't found Hence' or Nancy's parents, nor descendants of my ggf's siblings. But I'm still looking... Rita Queen

    3. Dolores, Thanks for responding. And it is so nice to know there is someone right in the county --- and the way you describe it, it sounds wonderful! Could you share a little bit more about the Winchester family and the time period or people they married -- as other lines might be involved? In fact, if you could write up a brief bio -- and post it, that would be on-line and that might bring in some connections. They don't have to be elaborate at all...but sometimes you discover more as you attempt to put it together in a story. http://www.genrecords.org/gafiles/ This is a page for forms, which make it easy for you to post. 3. Tom, The Gillespie family is mentioned in at least one of the books available for purchase at the Rabun County Historical Society. I bought all three books for my Daddy for Father's Day and they have been a big hit with him. I went to school with some Gillespies in Rabun County in the early 1960's. I also noticed in the "People" book that Gillespies and McCurrys were connected. I just found that article this afternoon while reading some of the book to my Dad. I have McCurry connections as well as McClure, Ledford and Stockton. I don't have the three books in front of me now and don't remember the full titles, but generally they are the "Sketches", PIctorial History" and "People" books. I think they are excellent sources for research in Rabun County. Pam McClure TGille6770@aol.com wrote: My g-g-g-grandfather moved to Rabun County in the mid 1820's from NC. 3. Sometimes people wonder just how many people are reading the messages on a County List. GARABUN has 132 subscribers! Let's hear from folks about what things you're stuck on about Rabun County ancestors. Rabun Co was formed in 1819 --- very old compared to some counties!! It was formed from "Cherokee Lands" - -meaning it was part of the Land Lottery of 1820. Wish we had that listing on-line! http://www.rootsweb.com/~garabun/ Dawn Watson's page gives much more history about this. Be sure to visit her page and click on all the categories. Many people living in Rabun County drew land in the 1827 land lottery. You can find them listed at: http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/ga/rabun/deeds/1827lot.txt (This listing is by the day they drew) http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/ga/deeds/1827/sur/ This listing is alphabetical by surname. http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/ga/rabun.htm Check this page to see what is on-line in the Archives for Rabun. We don't seem to get very much traffic, so I think we might need to get some dialogue going to help out new subscribers. January 2004 3 messages February 2004 12 messages March 2004 6 messages April 2004 6 messages May 2004 4 messages June 2004 3 messages So please -- let's see some messages come through. SK Publications is offering a census CD with images of the Rabun County Federal censuses (free population schedules) for the years 1830, 1840, 1850, 1860, 1870 and 1880 on one CD for $20. The quality of these CDs is top-notch.
