    3. Mel---Pumpkin Pile is in the 1079th Georgia Militia District of Polk County. These districts were areas for raising men in times of trouble and are still the voting precincts. In earlier days, there were usually smaller communities out in the countryside where there was maybe a store with a post office for the convenience of the residents. This is probably the case with Pumpkin Pile. As one of the folks mentioned, this name, which sounds strange to us, was probably Indian in origin. We also have a Collard Valley in Polk County, which was named after an Indian, Chief Collard. If you go to the Polk County GenWeb site and choose the Old Query page, there is a Polk County map showing the GMDs. The 1079th is in the southwest corner of Polk and joins Haralson County, GA on the south and Alabama on the west. This website also has 1860 census listings showing the heads of household in the Pumpkin Pile district. There are some interesting newspaper articles about the earlier days and people of Polk County. You can go through the USGenWeb site to Georgia, then Polk County. ---Annette Ledford -----Original Message----- From: Mel Schmidt <[email protected]> To: [email protected] <[email protected]> Date: Wednesday, June 20, 2001 12:27 AM Subject: [GAPOLK] Pumpkin Pile PO >Anyone have a idea where the Pumpkin Pile Post Office was located?
