There will be a celebration at the Van Wert Cemetery on Saturday, October 23, 2004 between the hours of 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. The Van Wert Cemetery is rich in history. Burials include member of several Pioneer Families as well as many of the Welsh Settlers who came to work in the Slate Quarry. The earliest marked grave had a death date of 1821, but is no longer readable. Van Wert was the county seat of Paulding County before Polk County was formed from part of Paulding County in 1851. Van Wert then fell within the boundaries of Polk County and Dallas was chosen as the new County Seat for Paulding County and Cedartown was chosen as the County Seat for Polk County.
