    1. Van Wert Cemetery Day
    2. Doris Robbins
    3. There will be a celebration at the Van Wert Cemetery on Saturday, October 23, 2004 between the hours of 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. The Van Wert Cemetery is rich in history. Burials include member of several Pioneer Families as well as many of the Welsh Settlers who came to work in the Slate Quarry. The earliest marked grave had a death date of 1821, but is no longer readable. Van Wert was the county seat of Paulding County before Polk County was formed from part of Paulding County in 1851. Van Wert then fell within the boundaries of Polk County and Dallas was chosen as the new County Seat for Paulding County and Cedartown was chosen as the County Seat for Polk County. Drop by at your convenience and learn more about what all is being done to preserve this historic cemetery, which is on the Georgia Registry of Historic Places. Her remains were brought here Sunday for interment in Greenwood cemetery. Services were held at the graveside by Rev. G W Smith, pastor of Pooltown Baptist Church, assisted by Rev. Linder. Mrs. Burdett spent the greater portion of her life in Polk county and was one of the seven to constitute the Pooltown church 52 years ago. She lived a long and useful life. Mrs. Burdett will be remembered as the widow of the late J. A. Burdett, a prominent citizen, who preceded her in death several years ago. In addition to her daughter, Mrs. G. L. Kennedy, of Fitzgerald, she is survived by two sons, Otis H. Burdett of Atlanta, and E. L. Burdett of Birmingham, and by a nephew (whom she reared) Ed Mitchell of Atlanta. Those from out of town here to attend the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Ed Mitchell of Atlanta; Miss Cora Whitten and John Whitten of Buchanan, and thirteen grandchildren from atlanta and Fitzgerald, and six great grand children. Her grandsons acted as pall bearers.
