I am researching an individual by the name of Andrew Jackson Bowen Sr. He was born about 1819 somewhere in Georgia. Location at this point is unknown. He has turned up in the Eastern Alabama area as well as Carroll County and Haralson County Georgia. He married a Mary Lee Hays in June of 1853 in Carroll County Georgia. He had two children with him before this marriage, which may lead me to believe that he may have been married once before Mary. The Children that were living with him and Mary at the 1860 Census of Carroll County were as follows: James Bowen born about 1846 in Alabama; Lucinda Bowen born about 1848 in Alabama also; Christian C. Bowen born about 1854 in Georgia; John Lunsford Bowen born Sept. 27, 1855 in Georgia, died June 29, 1917 in Anniston, Alabama; Nancy Bowen born about 1859; and Andrew Jackson Bowen Jr. born March 30, 1860 in Carroll County, Georgia, died July 17, 1945 in Cedartown, Georgia. Andrew Jackson Bowen Sr. enlisted in the 35th Regiment, Company "A" of the Haralson County Guards of the Northern Virginia Army C.S.A. on August 15, 1861. He died in battle on July 12, 1865 in Richmond, Virginia. He is buried at the Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond, Virginia. I do not have any additional information other than what I have listed here. If anyone has any additional information please advise of such information. Thank you, Cory Bowen.

I am looking for information on a THOMAS family that was in Cedartown in the late 1800's. My family lore has it that it was an important part of the lives of the THOMAS family. They moved around often but they seem to have a special connection to Cedartown. I hate to sound so cryotic in this e-mail but I have very little information about the connection between the THOMAS family and Cedartown. Randall Fields

My Archives here in Raleigh has no information for Polk County, GA at all! I rely on the internet for most of my research. I have a copy of the September 12, 1989 Cedartown Standard article regarding the "PITTMAN" 40th Reunion at Rolator Park. This article lists considerable information on my Pittman/Hackney line (misses the Isbell connection). It also lists attendees at that reunion with the following surnames: Hardy, Cummings, Bramlett, Pirkle, Fleming, Griswell, Reid, Fuller, Madden, Prior, Peterson, Jordon, McCurry, Williams, Russell, Cochran, Nabors. The paper states that the annual reunion is "always held on the fourth Sunday in August". I was wondering if perhaps there was a 49th PITTMAN Reunion this year on 23 August and if there was a write-up in the paper. If any of you Polk County folks have any information on these families or this reunion, I would really appreciate hearing from you. Thanks! Lila [email protected]
Looking for family of James Vandiver MADDOX b 21 Mar 1882 Polk Co GA d 14 Jan 1954 Jefferson Co AL. Parents were Jonathon MADDOX and Betty HARRISON; Jonathon said to have died in Polk County GA after being bitten by a rabid cow. Family legend has him being kept in basement of Cedartown jail from time of bite until his subsequent death.
I am still looking for the elusive Nancy Peek (Peak) who was married to Joel Brewer. She was born about 1833, married Joel May 13, 1849 in Paulding County and died sometime in 1870. Joel and Nancy were listed in the 1860 Census in Polk County. There is also a listing for Susan Brewer, widow, near theirs. We speculate that she was Joel's mother. Information just given to us suggest that Joel's father was Benjamin Brewer who died by 1850. We are unable to account for the family's whereabouts in 1870. We are speculating that Nancy died in childbirth and Joel had small children to worry about. His possible brother, Joseph Brewer, was in Paulding Co. at the time, but Joel's family was not listed with his. Joel became the Ordinary of Polk County in 1873 and served until his death, April 9, 1898. According to some records he donated at least some of the land for the Bethlehem Baptist Church at Fish Creek in Polk County. In any case, the church was founded AFTER Nancy Peek Brewer's death. Was she buried originally on the property? Joel is buried between Nancy and his second wife, Elizabeth Jackson. Was Nancy's body moved there later? Who were her parents? If you have any information on these Brewer's and/or Peek's (Peak's), please contact me. I'd be more than happy to share information that I have. Thanks, Carole

Hi, I have a question. While looking at some Polk Co. census, this weekend here in Oklahoma, the heading of the census says Schedule, Free inhabitants in 1223 Dist. G.M. (Youngs), in the Co. of Polk, State of Ga.. My question is, where is 1223 Dist. G.M. (Youngs) located in Polk Co., Ga. I found my great great grandparents on the 1880's census, but not sure where they were living at the time. Any help would be appreciated. becky
