    1. [GAPOLK] RAPER, HINDMAN, ROSE
    2. The RAPER family is thought to have lived first in the Cedartown area. The family has a strong Cherokee oral tradition and sorting the individuals is difficult. Mary Jane RAPER married George W. HINDMAN. Dates and locations are not known but they lived on and worked a farm. She had what is described as "carrot top hair" meaning very red. Such is not conducive to Native American hair coloration but has been confirmed by several family members. Nancy Malinda RAPER, May 7, 1870, Aug 19, 1930 married William R. ROSE 1863 - Jun 6, 1915. At one time, the family lived in Rome where the Rome Tribune News Parking Lot is located. Most of the family was employed by the Rome Hosiery Mill, presently the Rome Tribune. Many Rose Families remain in the Rome. Any leads on this family will be appreciated, thank you, Rosebird

    1. [GAPOLK] Donaldsons
    2. Greetings from Townsend, TN It am new to the Polk Co. list. I am researching the Donaldson family. I have been told my great grandfather, Henry Donaldson, was born in Etna, GA. I am looking for information on his parents, Susan and S. J. Donaldson. Henry was born in 1856. One thing I am particularly interested in at this time is finding a copy of the 1850 and 1860 Census showing the Donaldson family in Georgia. I have the 1870 census for Edwardsville (Cleburne Co), AL, at which time Susan is shown as head of household with 12 children living at home. The first 8 children were born in Georgia and the last 4 in Alabama. I have not been able to trace this Donaldson back past the 1870 census. The names and ages of the 12 children from the 1870 Census: Watts-24; Mary 22; Martha-18; Fleming-16; Henry-14; Frances-12; Madison-10; Leonard-8; William-6; Susnala-5; Elijah-3; Jane-1. Susan is 45 at this time. Does anyone have any information on this line? E. Russell

    3. Hi, do you know if there are tax records for the years 1880-1888 for Polk County? If so, you know someone who could do a search in them? If there is no one available for free lookups (I would be willing to pay for costs of copying & parking), then do you know someone who would be available for a paid search? 3. Glenn, Seney, GA is located just inside of Polk Co., across the county line from Floyd Co. It's on the old Rome road, just south of Highway 101. It's been so long since I've been there I don't remember if there is a cemetery located there. What Brooks are you researching? 3. Hello- I have attempted to search the Polk county records for the 1860s 1870s and found it very difficult because of the poor handwriting. Has anyone been able to decipher those records. Also, I am trying to locate the cemetery in which Hiram, who died in 1872, would be buried. Information seems to lead that his land was southwest of town. Thanks, Jane Leslie Newberry

    1. [GAPOLK] Fwd: Update on Floyd County, GA Heritage Book
    2. Update on Publication of Floyd County, GA Heritage Book... The final proofing of "The Heritage of Floyd County, GA" was mailed on January 15, 2000. We are looking for a late January or very early February publication. The Floyd County Heritage Book Committee is very excited about this book...especially considering we have volunteered a lot of time over the past year and a half helping put this together for Walsworth Publications. It is a beautiful collector's edition hardbound book written by and about people of Floyd County, Georgia. It features over 500 family articles and over 300 topical stories and over 500 photographs. The color is "leaf green" with stamped gold lettering and borders with a gold outline of Floyd County, inset with the historic Clock Tower. The county and Clock Tower are enclosed within a double-ringed gold-stamped oval. Though there are many wonderful stories about people, communities, churches, schools and businesses, there are two special stories that I am glad made it in this book. Both of these deal with local landmarks that have been destroyed since we first sent all submissions in for publication. These landmarks are the old Rock Store along Kingston Highway in the Johnson School community and the 100+ year old Foster's Mill Store along Ga. 100 south of Rome. For more information about ordering or when the book will be available, please contact me at the e-mail address below. Snail-mail inquiries may be sent to the committee address. e-mail: [email protected] Snail-mail: Floyd County Heritage Book P. O. Box 6096 Rome, GA 30162 Sincerely, Tony Pope, Co-Chair Floyd County Heritage Book Committee
