She was born in Pike County, the daughter of the late J. B. (Bunt) Armistead and Stevie Brown Armistead of Zebulon. She was preceded in death by her first husband of 54 years, W. D. (Bill) Allen; siblings, Cleveland Armistead of Williamson, Dan Armistead and Jesse Armistead of Barnesville and Eula Wood of Commerce; nephew, Doug Armistead of Williamson; and her grandson, Josh Reeves, who was killed in action in 2007 while serving in Operation Iraqi Freedom. Mrs. Reeves was a graduate of Pike County High School. She attended business school and was employed as the first secretary of the Pike County Welfare Department that was opened in 1936. She was Clerk of the Pike County Selective Board until she closed the office at the end of World War II. She lived in Barnesville for 25 years where she and her husband opened and operated Allen's Cleaners and Laundry. They sold it in 1972 and moved back to Pike County. While living in Barnesville, she was active in the First Methodist Church, serving as Sunday School Teacher in the children's department and as Superintendent of the Children's Division for a number of years. During her retirement, she and her husband traveled extensively. After the death of her first husband, and at the age of 79, she married a former high school classmate, Leyman Reeves. She was a member of the Williamson United Methodist Church. Ruth was a charter member of the Pike County Historical Society and was very interested in her family history.
