    1. Re: [GAPIKE] 1896 J.C. Garner Visit
    2. The article regarding the JC Garner visit prompted my memory....... I have a Garner line in my family through marriage. My Aunt, Rosebud Garner Allen was born March 28, 1903 to John and Lillie (Britt) Garner. John Garner was the son of Wilson Vandever Garner, born 1830 and died in 1931. He fought with Stonewall Jackson in the War Between the States. His family was originally (from family lore) from North Ga...but he wound up settling near Barnesville, GA (which was then Pike County..now Lamar). He was married twice; nothing is know of his first wife..but his second wife was known as "Granny Merritt." Lore has it that his family left Murray County GA headed out "West" to seek their fortune. Grandpa Garner was born in a covered wagon on route in Kansas. His Father and a Mr. Bead began a general store out there..."Bead and Garner." At the outbreak of the War, Wilson enlisted on the Confederate side. He had one brother, name unknown, who fought with the Yankees. Grandpa Garner said that he recognized his brother once on the battlefield..each waved to the other, but couldn't speak. Nothing further is know about the brother. Grandpa Garner was wounded in his hand. This is noted in his pension application for Confederate Pension. He lived to be 101....I have newpaper clippings from the celebration in Griffin in 1930...plus a family photo which also appeared in the paper of he and his descendants. He held a huge birthday cake embossed with 100 pink candles. Wilson is burried in the city cemetery in Barnesville, GA. His children were: 1. Melinda "Lindy" Garner-married Christopher Columbus "Kit" Virden (lived in Juliette, GA) Children: Magnolia, Zollie Lou, and others 2. John Garner-married Lillie Britt (also of Barnesville) (lived in Jackson, Atlanta, Thomaston and Griffin) one daughter, Rosebud Garner (married Goss D. Allen) 3. Nettie Garner-married Walter "Walt" Sanders (lived in Cedartown, GA) no children 4. William Garner-married Ellen (lived near LaGrange) They had one daughter Lena Kate Garner married Coley Glenn. She was a house Mother for a sorority at LaGrange College. 5. Frances "Fannie" Garner-married ???? Thomas. (lived in Thomaston, GA) Two daughters: Gwendolyn and Gaynelle. 6. Kittie Ree Garner (no children) IF this means anything to anyone out there...let me know. Drew Payne
