Yes, it is a tragedy. Mr. Gunter wanted to know how long ago it was that this lady went to the site. I did not know. But I'll let him know that it was a month ago. What is being done with the site? Is there any construction going on from what this woman could tell? -----Original Message----- From: Billie Ford [mailto:BFORD@MO-NET.COM] Sent: Thursday, November 21, 2002 1:46 PM To: GAPIKE-L@rootsweb.com Subject: RE: [GAPIKE] ALERT: A CEMETERY IS BEING DESTROYED Rainy, I had heard that it may be a black cemetery, But that there may be whites buried there also. BOY I thank you so very much for doing the leg work on this. I hope this gets settled for the best, but am afraid it may be much to late as the lady listing the names states that they were bulldozing as long as a month ago. I do hope that they can at least save the stones. That would be a blessing. Thanks again Rainy. This is a tragedy for one and all. I have received word that the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, located on Piedmont Road, Pike/Lamar County is or has been bulldozed and destroyed. One of our ladies doing service as to plotting and listing names for those buried in each cemetery visited this cemetery last month. At that time she found it in a state of destruction. This cemetery is the same one that I have been trying to bring to one's attention as to it being in such a disgraceful shape. I tried at that time to see about a Boy Scout Troup or just any group ,maybe taking it on as a project and cleaning it up and doing repairs. This was to no avail. I live in Missouri and am unable to do what was needed in person. It is against the law to desecrate a burial site and there can be levied a very large fine against any one that has did so. Is there any one out there that can tell me if Mt Pleasant cemetery is or is not in Pike/Lamar Co.? This cemetery is located SE on Piedmont Road about 1/4 mile South of Mt. Zion Church/cemetery, and is on the same side of the road as MT. Zion Church. It is located just a short distance from a bridge or culvert with cement sides. There is a short drive of about 20 ft that one has to park in. There is a cable stretched across the drive at that point. The cemetery is no more than 50 foot from Piedmont road. As I understand it, the stones have been bulldozed in to the trees, broken etc. I am of the understanding this may be a slave cemetery, but that is not confirmed, may be a mixture. This is a deplorable thing to have happen and some one needs to be held responsible. Will some one please check this out. Thank You, Billie Ford. She just said that one side of the cemetery had been bulldozed and that the stones were pushed up , many of them broken, into the woods, and that many deep grave site holes were apparent No construction at that time. I want to apologize to the gapike site for posting all the return messages to that site. I think we should have been doing this between each other. All though, this should be of concern to one and all. Thanks again, Billie. -----Original Message----- From: Rainy Parks [mailto:rparks@ci.atlanta.ga.us] Sent: Thursday, November 21, 2002 1:21 PM To: GAPIKE-L@rootsweb.com Subject: RE: [GAPIKE] ALERT: A CEMETERY IS BEING DESTROYED Yes, it is a tragedy.
