The Spalding County Fire Marshal sent me the following information: "I spoke with Ann at Griffin / Spalding Voter registration in reference to the Africa District and there formation. They are Militia districts formed in the late 1800's for land areas to provide 100 able bodied men in case for the need of defense. Spalding has kept the militia districts as voting districts and some of our fire districts are named after them such as Cabin and Akin districts....Anyway the Africa district is in the north central of Spalding County and was probable in Henry County prior to Spalding being formed in 1851 from portions of Henry, Pike and Monroe Counties. I'm trying to determine where that would be located in present day Griffing Ga. today and what county or area it would have been before Griffin was formed. would it have been close to Barnesville Ga. or Monroe Henry or Pike Counties. I hope someone on the list can help. Does any one know why it was called Africa District?
