The Pike County Journal Zebulon, Pike County, Georgia: October 28, 1892 Accidentally Killed Jerry Dickinson and John Huguley [sp] have been blasting rock for Will Wells in the latterÂ’s well for some time past and on last Wednesday a blast went off prematurely and gave them a severe shock from which Jerry died in a few hours. Both were in the well tamping the dry powder with an iron rod. They were using a mutilated fuse which ignited from a spark from a stone and Jerry who was directly over the load received the full force of the discharge. One of his legs was broken, as well as one of his arms and his face was horribly mangled. He also received severe internal injuries and lived only a short time after the accident. John Huguly [sp] managed to crawl out of the well, but was badly hurt on the heel, as well as internally. His wounds, however, are by no means serious and he will be well, doubtless, in a short time. It is another case of monkeying with a buzz saw. (Transcribed 10/25/02 Lynn Cunningham)
