Pike County, Journal Zebulon, GA., Friday, October 23, 1891 Mr. J.P. Ballard, who lives two and a quarter miles north of town and who is totally blind, walked here from his home one day last week without a guide or any assistance from anyone. He crossed a foot log and traveled a route that puzzles those with good eyesight at night. We are glad to see our friend able to perform so unusual a feat. (Transcribed 10/21/02 Lynn Cunningham) Note: James Patton Ballard, son of William Barnes Ballard and Martha J. Unity Patton. He was married to Sarah Rivers. He was a member of Co H, 44th Ga Regt. during the Civil War, and was noted as being blind on the 1880 census.
