J.W. Beck Was Buried At Jackson On Yesterday He Was a Prominent Minister and Educator, and Was a Gallant Confederate Soldier Jackson, Ga., March 20. - (Special) - Rev. J.W. Ellis, at whose home he died, and his son, Walter L. Beck, of Chicago, and were met here by his son, Judge Marcus W. Beck, of Atlanta. Professor Beck, as he was called by the people here, where he lived many years as pastor of the Baptist church, and principal of the school, was greatly admired and loved throughout this section. He was a man of giant intellect. As a Christian minister he was greatly beloved, and as a confederate soldier with the army of northern Virginia has an enviable record. He was elected captain of his company. He was promoted to major, and again promoted to Lieutenant colonel of the Forty-fourth Georgia regiment. He was with the army of northern Virginia in its notable battles, excepting the second Manassas and Sharpsburg - he having been severely wounded at Malvern Hill. I was very saddened to learn yesterday of the death of Ken Johnson on Friday, November 17, 2006. His obituary is posted at: http://obit.desmondfuneralhome.com/obit_display.cgi?id=355040&listing=Current If you contributed data to the Georgia GenWeb Archives project, you may have worked with Ken, as he was a County file manager as early as 2001 that I am aware of. Ken was the county file manager for the following counties: Baldwin Coweta** Chattooga Columbia Decatur Elbert** Greene Gwinnett Hancock** Morgan Oglethorpe** Putnam** Walton** Wilkes** State File Manager, Virginia Crilley, has taken over the counties Ken handled and is working very diligently to fix any links on those pages to her name and e-mail address until new managers can be found for those counties. She also plans to do a memorial page. Notice of Ken's passing has been posted to the ** counties above. If you are sub'd to one of the lists that is not marked with ** please help us to pass this information on. Carolyn, his wife, was always active with the archives as well, although she stayed in the background. Please help me pass the word around to those who may have known them. I know she would be grateful to hear from any of you via the Funeral Home Guest Book. Ken took care of the Archives for so many counties, and, since he had done this for so long, I'm sure he was very well known in all of them. Valerie Freeman Tustin, California

Zebulon, Pike County, Georgia December 19, 1902 One of the biggest moves that ever occurred in the history of the town took place here Thursday night. An unknown crowd came in and picked up Will Post's store house and its contents on Main St., and carried it over on Railroad St., and put it down in front of B.F. Rowes store and left it there in the most conspicuous part of the town. Soon as Mr. Rowe discovered it there next morning he decided it was too close to his business and offered a good setup for help enough to move it away, to which the town boys quickly responded and removed it across the railroad on the J.H. Lee and Son block, where Mr. Post is now comfortably located in his new quarters and is doing business just the same and says the change in venue has not set him back any. Zebulon, Pike County, Georgia, November 14, 1902 Mrs. Elizabeth Allen Dead Mrs. Elizabeth E. Allen, aged nearly 87 years old, died at one oclock a.m. on the 11th inst. At her home near Williamson. Her funeral was held from her late residence on Wednesday morning. Her remains were interred in the Allen cemetery, Rev. C.V. Weathers conducted the funeral and said in part: Mrs. Elizabeth Allen was born in Edgefield, S.C., April 29, 1815. Her maiden name was Stegar. She was the daughter of Mr. And Mrs. Robt. M. Stegar. Bro. Stegar was for some years an Exhortor in the Methodist church. Sister Allens family moved to this country when she was about twelve years of age. When quite young she was converted and joined the Methodist church of which she remained a faithful member until the Lord took her away. On May 9, 1858, she was happily married to the now sainted Abraham Stokes Allen. Sister Allen never had any children of her own but in her marriage became the stepmother of seven children. We are told that she was as true and loving and devoted to them as became her relation to them. For several years Sister Allen has been a widow, Bro. Allen having preceded her to the spirit world. During her last days she became infirm with age and memory very much impaired in recalling many events of the past. She had forgotten her age. But there was one thing she seemed to grasp and that was her love for God and her hope and expectation of getting to heaven. She frequently said, "I expect to get to heaven when I die." She has gone from us and we believe that her expectation has been realized. While she sleeps from her labor and toil her works do follow her. The step- children will feel the touch of her life and influence. She leaves an only sister, Sister Jordan, a host of friends and many relatives who will lament her departure but are consoled in the belief that she is at rest with the sainted in glory. She lived well, had faith in her Lord, builded her character upon Him, rested her hope of eternal life in Him, and has left us to receive the rich reward of all who love him. We deeply sympathize with the bereft and would insist upon them ever following in her footsteps as she followed in the footsteps of our Lord. Let us not sorrow as those without hope, for if we serve Him we shall see this Mother in Isreal again as she wake in the likeness of our Lord. Tuesday the 16th of September was set for the day. It dawned with a bright and beautiful morning, with all the glory of Indian summer. Early the vehickles [sp] began to arrive from all directions, filled to their utmost capacity with loving friends and smiling faces. After a hearty handshake with fathers and mothers, brothers and sisters, nieces and nephews, cousins, uncles and aunts, in fact all we met were kinsfolk. All seemed enthused with a slight foretaste of that great reunion, when we will all be gathered safe at home. We remained at the cemetery some little while looking after and caring for the grave of the loved ones, after which we repaired to the famous old rock spring, where our father, grand father and great grand father and great great grandfather Green settled, a pioneer in the early part of the nineteenth century, before the trail of the Red Man had vanished from his native forest. It was here he settled near this spring, and reared a large, remarkable family of eight sons and six daughters. While some died in infancy, all others married except their oldest daughter, who died while in the flush of early youth. This patriarch and his wife were named John and Nancy Green. Ther children were as follows: Mountain, Hartford, Gilben, Rebecca, Alethia, Malinda, Franklin, Daniel, Jonah, Richard, Martha, Mary, [unreadable name], and Tabitha. All are dead except Mrs. Mary Head, of Brushey, and all left families of children. Hartford and Gilben were twice married, leaving to [sp] sets of children each. Old Uncle Peter Green, so well known around Griffin, was once the property of John Green. No doubt Uncle Peter has often heard the screech of the wild cat and panther mingled with the primitive howl of the wolf, which were as familiar sounds in those days of yore as the song of the English sparrow is around our country homes today. All things have changed except the old rock with its natural steps descending to the spring, which nature seems to have hewn out of the cavity of the rock, where the water still gurgles as pure and limpid as it did when Uncle Peter was a little pickaninny playin[g] around his fathers cabin door. The large populars, elms, and water oaks that overshadow the rock and spring, afforded comfortable shade for us all, being a large concourse of people. After prayer by W.U. Kendrick, we soon repaired to dinner, it being spread on the snow white cloths on top the full length of this old big rock. The most toothsome repast we ever saw - it was enough to tempt an epicure. After the blessing by Rev. Kendrick, all seemed to do it full justice to their hearts content - a bountiful repast it was indeed. Later on we sung God be with you till we meet again, which we intend to do on the second Tuesday in September, 1903, if nothing providentially hinders. All that are related by blood or marriage are cordially invited to come and be with us at our next reunion - no other expected. Now, may God be with you all till we meet again. - One Who Was Present [Transcribed 11/14/06 Lynn Cunningham] File at: http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/ga/pike/newspapers/johngree1970gnw.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.org/gafiles/ File size: 4.0 Kb
