Pike-Lamar County GaArchives News.....Marshall Porch Of Barnesville Killed By Ben Perdue. September 25, 1908 ************************************************ Copyright. All rights reserved. http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/copyright.htm http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/ga/gafiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Lynn Cunningham http://www.rootsweb.com/~archreg/vols/00011.html#0002535 December 1, 2006, 5:34 pm The Pike County Journal. Zebulon, Pike County, Georgia September 25, 1908 Shot Sunday Morning About Three Oclock Mr. Ben Porch, night marshal of Barnesville, was shot Sunday morning by Ben F. Perdue. Porch had arrested Perdue earlier in the night for violation of some city ordinance and locked him up. Perdue secured release by bail and it is said, later in the night secured a shotgun with which he shot the marshal twice, one load entering the hips and the other entering the stomach. When he was shot, his cries were heard by Mayor T.W. Cochran, who lives where the killing occurred and he ran to his assistance. He carried the marshal to his residence and called in medical aid. It was at first seen that Mr. Porch was in a serious condition. He lingered until twelve oclock Sunday when he died. Sheriff Harrison was notified early in the morning and went to Barnesville an began a search for Perdue in the country round about, it being thought he was not many miles away. The sheriff had cards struck giving a description of Perdue and notices of the reward and mailed all over the state Sunday afternoon as well as giving notice by telegraph and telephone to all towns in the state. It would have been difficult for him to have made an escape. He was captured at Zenith in Crawford county about midnight on Monday night by Sheriff Zeigler and another man and was brought to Zebulon Tuesday morning. A reward of four hundred dollars was offered for his arrest. Mr. Porch was about forty-five years of age and leaves a family. Mr. Perdue is about the same age and has a family. Both are of prominent connections and much interest is being manifested in the affair.
