Valerie: I don't think you are wasting your time. They should respond. But your copy will be made from the clerk entered version in the Marriage Book and the Will Book. The copy won't be made from the original records, which they may have on file. Do send the clerk a small check to cover the copy costs and postage. Most courthouse clerks in GA are very helpful. Some are more protective of their original records than others. I think Pike County is one of the most restrictive counties in Georgia when it comes to access to original courthouse records. I can understand a certain amount of this. Handling old documents, especially if not done carefully, shortens their life. A few years back, even the bound copies in Probate could not be photocopied. You had to transcribe or take photographs of the documents. I understand they do allow those books to be photocopied now. I have not even tried to get to the original documents, though I would love to do so. Most of the original documents have been microfilmed and are available at the GA Department of Archives and History. These reels of film can be purchased from the archives for $20 per reel with the written permission of the appropriate court judge. I have gone through this process with some of the Pike County Probate film and the judge was very accomodating. If the film was made by the LDS, it takes about a month to get back. If made by a local company in Georgia, it's a little faster. I am so sorry --as I had planned some serious stuff once these marriage records were out of the way. They did tell me the poor school records are on microfilm at the archives. I am going to check to see if copies are available for sale--if so maybe I can do it that way. If so I can transcribe them, get them up on the internet and make a copy for them to keep at the courthouse, and one for the historical society. Also I asked, for y'all's future benefit, if someone sent them a request for a sopy of a marriage license what was the cost. 25 cents per copy plus postage--same as I ask. And you get the same document copy. By that I mean--they have the original licenses but no one is allowed to look at them. Someone made copies back in the 50's and had them bound in books--those are the documents I copy for y'all. I was hoping if you sent $10 they might copy the original document for you-but no such luck. The only draw back to contacting the courthouse directly is that they do it whenever time permits and you might have to wait 6 months to a year, and they won't do any research for you-i.e all the Beckhams in Pike county or whatever. You must know exactly what you want. For those I have not told --there is a copy of the 1850 census--alphabetized --that I do have access to if you need anything checked on it. Because it is alphabetized I cannot tell you who someone's neighbors were though. I guess that is it for today--i just wanted to let you know about those old documents--and that I am still trying to get hold of them somehow--just be patient with me. Say a prayer for me. Just wanted to let you know--if I am understanding all this correctly--if I can get written permission from the Probate Judge I can get a copy of whatever probate records they have on microfilm at the archives. So onece i get these marriages out of the way--I will find out what they have of Pike County's, see what we want and try to get permission. Wish me luck. Steph PS If some genie would just find me my own microfilm reader. Wonder why they don't put all that stuff on Cd and make life easy for all of us.
I had my husband take a look when he was out this morning. It is hard to see it--but there is a sign marking the cemetery. If you are coming from Williamson going toward Zebulon--right before you get to the trun for Reidsboro Rd. the sign is the same as a street sign---green with reflective letters--a little bent. It is hidden somewhat by trees and set off the road a piece. I had seen it one nite, becuase the headlights relflected off of it and I thought there was an old road hidden there. However my husband informed me today it is the cemetery sign. Sometime when I am in snake gear I will try to check it out.. I believe it is several feet before you see that old burned chimney. Steph
I got the address for those of you who wanted it. If you want to order a copy of the book the total price, plus shipping is $77.20 It is a big book--probably 9 X 13 with 750 pages in it. Included is a reprint of the original history book. If you want one--please write Hazel Milby PO Box 356 Meansville, GA 30256 Steph

Last time I checked the local library still had copies of the book for sale. I will try to check on that today and found out how much and the address to mail your request, if you wish. Steph
We had a Board of Directors meeting last nite. Hoepfully now that all the organizational paper work is out of the way we can really start moving on some projects. The newsletter is the main thing to me--and since I am assistant chairperson on that committee maybe I can light a fire. Our biggest problem has been finding a place to house the Society. No one wants to donate any space and we have all kinds of stuff piling up for the museum and research stuff. We even all a whole pile of old arrest warrents we'd like to get somewhere so people can use them for research purposes. They discussed family, student and lifetime memberships. The individuals are $15, lifetime will be $150. ( a payment plan can be worked out for the latter) We discussed a web site--but unfortunately I seem to be the only one even vaguely computer literate and no one knows where to begin. I would appreciate any suggestions on cheap or free web space . Maybe if I can present them with something definate I can get them moving a little easier. We are having a speaker at our general meeting--he will be discussing the fact that at one time pottery was as big an industry in Pike county as peaches (and that is really going some). I understand he has some of the pottery created here at the time. Our annual banquet is tentatively set for April 28th and will be in period dress ( ca 1830's) They are hoping to have a photographer to do pictures and hopefully a band who can play period music. Should be a lot of fun. Stephanie
Located on Williamson and Zebulon Rd. at the intersection of Reidsboro Rd. Was the Simmons family cemetery. In the year of 1930 there was a rock wall around the cemetery. Over the years the wall disappeared. Some time in the year of 1940 the County Road Dept., had widen the road and struck a grave. A concrete slab was place over the bank to cover the grave (it can be seen there today). In 1991 the Commissioner was asked to put a marker on the cemetery spot "Simmons Cemetery" they agreed to put one. Carol in GA (Simmons descendant) ckgleo@aol.com
First of all thanks for your answers to my queries concerning wills etc. Does anyone know if there are any copies of the History of Pike County available anywhere and if so, where I might get a copy? Thanks so much. Nancy
Hi All Can anyone tell me where this cemetery is I was at Williamson-Zebulon & Reidsboro Rd and could not find a trace of it. Please Help Ralph
The Pike County GenWeb site now has the Brides Marriage Index A-F up and running. Isn't Stephanie wonderful? Her email address is SBrad1249@aol.com. Also, thanks to those who have sent Stephanie contributions to cover her copy costs at the courthouse. http://www.rootsweb.com/~gapike/pikemarindex.htm Barbara Smallwood Stock Pike County, GA GenWeb Pike County, GA Mailing List Administrator
Can anyone tell me why a person's goods were inventoried and then sold? Was this only done when there was not a will? I have found several listings like this (including my gg-grandfather in Pike County) while doing my research. Other records indicate that there was a will since my g-grandfather inherited land from his estate. Are there any legal minds out there who could tell me? Also, what is the definition of an "ordinary" as used in the court system? Thanks for any help you can give. Nancy

Stephanie Bradley has sent me the Brides Marriage Index for the "C" surnames and they are now online at http://www.rootsweb.com/~gapike/BridesC.htm . These are the entries for the older years. Stephanie will be adding the more recent years later. In the interest of getting more of the letters up sooner, the decision was made to get the older entries first. GenConnect has been down some in the past day or so. They are having some difficulties and are trying to remedy the situation. Please be patient. If any of you are interested in getting the S-K scanned census images for Pike County online in the GenWeb archives, a number of us can go in together and make it happen. For $20 each from enough people, S-K Publications will scan the images, send you a CD containing the images and also donate one to GenWeb Archives for putting online. I got on the waiting list for the 1860 census. For more details, check out their page at http://www.skpub.com/genie/census/ga/pike.html Once enough people sign up for a census year, they made the CD. There is about a 3 month delay before you receive your CD. You are not charged until the CD is ready to ship. Only 7 people purchasing a CD are required to get the 1860 one online. Also, if someone is looking for a project for which to volunteer, the GenWeb Archives Census Project is looking for volunteers to index the scanned images for a county to make locating someone on the census easier. No one has volunteered for Pike County. http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/census/skpublishers/ga_s-k.htm volunteers get a free copy of the census for that county from which to work. Steph, "you go, girl!!!" I also vote for the oldest marriage books first. You're a saint to be undertaking this major effort, and an inspiration to the rest of us that we could all type up some records available in our own area, and post for the benefit of other researchers -- ...what an exponential increase could result in the volume of data on the web!! I know this is not exactly geneaology related but I don't know where else to start. I need to find a retired pediatrician and I only have his last name to go on, not even a state. Does anyone have any idea where to begin? Just e-mail me privately and we won't bother the list with this. I just thought experienced researchers would have an answer. Stephanie SBRAD1249@aol.com
The Pike County, Georgia GenWeb would like to announce several major additions to the site, thanks to the hard work of several volunteers. A link to The Civil War Memoirs of Kingman Porter Moore, M.D. has been added to the Military Index page.
