    3. Barnesville is located just a few miles south-southeast of Griffin, Georgia. Griffin is south of Atlanta. Barnesville is on US Hwy 41, between Griffin and Forsyth. Barnesville is in Lamar County. Hope that helps. _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ Daryl Coleman Garland, Texas Homepage: http://www.dkco.com/ Family History Page: http://www.dkco.com/gen/gendex.html Proud Sponsor of RootsWeb! http://www.rootsweb.com/ ICQ UIN # 63679552 _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ Gendetec@aol.com wrote: > > I want to thank all who have helped me with Egbert Allen and his father > Greenberry Allen. 3. My 2Great Grandmother, Mary Ann Allen of Pike County (married to William Riley Jones) was born in 1824. Does anyone know if she was possibly a sister of Greenberry Allen? The ages suggest at least a possibility. 3. Harris County and Pike County, GA researchers: Some of you may have noticed that links to the GenConnect Boards on the Pike and Harris County GenWeb pages have not been working lately. I have corrected the link and they are now functional. I have one button on the main table. There is another below the table with some simple directions. Click on queries, which takes you to the message boards page. You can select wills, bible, obits, etc. from a pull-down menu on the message boards page. You will notice that there are more choices than you had previously. http://www.rootsweb.com/~gapike http://www.rootsweb.com/~gaharris Barbara Smallwood Stock GenWeb Coordinator for Harris and Pike Counties in GA

    3. My second great grandmother, Mary Ann Allen (wife of William Riley Jones, of the Jones family common to Pike County), may have been related to this Allen family. At this point, I do not know who Mary Ann Allen's parents or siblings were, but I do know that she lived from 1824 to December of 1865 and died in Pike County, and is buried at the Friendship Baptist Church Cemetery, just south of Griffin, GA (it was Pike County at one time, and I think it's now Lamar County). I am descended from Mary Ann Allen and her husband, William Riley Jones, through their daughter, Martha Frances Jones (1850-1927) and her husband, William Taylor Harris (1847-1900), who were my Great Grandparents. If any of you know more about this Mary Ann Allen and any possible relation to this Allen family mentioned below, I would like to know about it. 1. [GAPIKE] GenConnect Changes to the Pike and Harris County GenWeb
    2. Barbara Smallwood Stock
    3. Pike and Harris County, Georgia researchers: I received the following message recently concerning the GenConnect Message Boards. Those changes are now largely already in place. "IMPORTANT MESSAGE BOARDS IMPROVEMENTS You have probably heard about the new message board changes coming about in the next days and weeks. Ancestry.com and RootsWeb.com will be releasing a new integrated message board system that is a combination of two powerful message board systems (i.e., GenConnect and FamilyHistory.com). Users will be able to take advantage of a much larger community in which to share experience, tips, and genealogical information. Users will be able to access these new message boards on either RootsWeb.com or Ancestry.com, and message board access will remain free on both sites. We expect the new system to be more stable and have more features. Improvements include the following: --- The new message boards database will be by far the largest collection of such messages on the Internet. In fact, the FamilyHistory and RootsWeb messages are extremely complimentary. The majority of the messages on FamilyHistory are surname-based, while RootsWeb's strength is in the locality and topic areas. Not only will the new combination enjoy a larger set of data, but users will have access to a much larger audience. --- The new message boards can now handle attachments to e-mail messages in the form of uploaded pictures (scanned documents, family photos, etc.) and GEDCOM files. --- Users will be able to view the e-mail address of message authors and be able to respond to them easily and privately. However, the message boards cannot be "crawled" by unscrupulous third parties to gather e-mail addresses for spam mailings. --- Search functionality will be improved compared to either the RootsWeb or FamilyHistory systems. Search hits will be ranked by relevance and wildcard searches are available. --- The hardware infrastructure supporting the new message boards is faster, can handle larger traffic loads, and is more stable. The new system is also less expensive over time and easier to maintain. The boards, however, will definitely be a change. One specific concern we have is with existing hyperlinks to the old GenConnect system. We believe we will be able to redirect most of the traffic to the proper destinations in the new system, however there may be some adjustment required by USGenWeb SCs and CCs. [This is my problem.] USGW CCs will still be able to use the new message board system for their query requirements for XXGenWeb's. Actually, we hope that we have preserved the important features and conveniences from GenConnect as well as added a few new bells and whistles. It is important to us that these new boards continue to serve the needs of the USGenWeb users. We will be working hard to help you learn about the features of the new system so that they can continue to function as important research tools. Please help us by being communicative yet patient as we launch the new system." My own comments - Temporarily, the GenConnect Board buttons still appear as they were on the county GenWeb page. The query button still takes you directly to the appropriate County queries, though they look a little different. The other buttons take you to a selection of: Family History, Localities, Rootsweb Topics & Localities, Surnames and Topics. I'm not sure right now how you find the wills, obits, bios, etc, but eventually you will be able to do so. I will include some basic instruction when I figure it out myself. The search machine on the pages will be more comprehensive and search across all the boards so that part may be an improvement over the old. 2. Just to let y'all know--we got through our first banquet unscathed. Everything went real well, and we seem to finally be up and running. We even got the first issue of the newsletter printed. Those of you who are members and did not make it to the banquet should be receiving yours in the mail shortly if you haven't already. We are trying to get to the older residents of the county to write some articles for us about their communities. I just hope everyone will be understanding of their vocabulary. Ms. Rosalee King who did our first is a grand lady in her late 80's who stays busy all the time. Time has not slowed her a single bit. Plans are underway for a BBQ in September. This will be a family event and I hope lots of y'all will plan to make it. Our first field trip on May 5th went well also. We had some good speakers at the sites and got to see things most folks either don't notice or are not allowed to see. I did discover that I am a bit to old to go climbing in bell towers and I won't do that again--but I'm not sorry I did it once. Very shortly we will begin indexing the cemeteries. There are a number of family cemeteries that were misssed in the first indexing done back in the '70's--so we have to find all of them and add names to the rest. Anyone with any info on the location of any they might like to see indexed, please get in touch with me and I will see it is added to the list. I finally finished the "G" Bride's list, and as soon as Barbara works her magic on it, it will be up with the rest of them for you to peruse. I have started the "H" list, but this will be slow going there are an awful lot of pages. Just bear with me. Steph
