    3. I'm forwarding this message from Becky Carden to the group, as I'm not sure it got through to everyone. Barbara Stock -----Original Message----- From: Becky Carden [mailto:rec@hiwaay.net] Sent: Saturday, August 11, 2001 3:07 PM To: GAPIKE-L@rootsweb.com Subject: {not a subscriber} RE: McLeod's I posted this, but didn't see if come through, so I'll try again. I have recently found out, my Alexander McLeod, is buried in the Midway Baptist church, that was in Pike Co. at one time, I believe its in another county now. I also found out some more info on the McLeod's and Cauthens! Some of the McLeod's married Cauthens. My source, says the Cauthens lived on one side of Liberty Hill Road, and the McLeod's lived on the other. There was a stagecoach, that ran up and down that road, and the McLeod's owned a livery stable for the horses for the stagecoach. The McLeod house burned down, but the Cauthen house is still standing. I've heard the Cauthen house had a secret passage, and it led to the Underground Railroad, to help the slaves escape. Does anyone else know anything about this? Becky Carden

    3. Charlotte, I am working on scanning this particular cemetery from the 1969 typewritten list into a word-processing program on my computer. It is seven pages long, transcribed in 1969 by Jack Morgan. Fincher Methodist Church and cemetery is located in Meansville. When I finish, I will do an alphabetical listing in order to be able to search for specific names. Check back with me later. In the meantime, there are a few listings on the Pike County web page for this cemetery: http://www.rootsweb.com/~gapike/cem026.htm Lynn Charlotte Story wrote: > I need to know if anyone can send me a list of the people buried in > the Fincher Cemetery. 2. There is a COGGIN cemetery in Pike Co -- near Hollonville. There is a partial index on-line that is part of the Pike Co Gen Web site. I have no idea if Hollonville is close to Molena. . . In my research of the Coggin line, I have sometimes seen it mis-written as Scoggin. . . Valerie Johnson Freeman Tustin, California "Genealogy is like playing hide and seek: they hide . . . 1. [GAPIKE] PIKE CO., GEORGIA
    2. DORIS
    3. Hi folks, I'm new to the list, but not new to researching in Pike Co. The web site is wonderful and easy to find what you need, 'if it is there in the first place'. My point, the whole of Georgia, Pike Co. in particular, has a gold mine of research records just waiting for some of us to submit them to the sites. I"ve been working about 25 yrs. (not all that time on the internet) on finding my ancestors and am just now beginning to make some break throughs. So guys, why don't we help each other by posting all those deeds, wills, obits and other records online. We have to send for them anyway and it only takes a few minutes to type them out and forward them to the web managers, (or what ever they are called.) Just think of the time and frustration it will save the next person looking for that Info. In time we could possible have all the records online, wouldn't that be great. I've personally sent in several of my ancestors wills these last few weeks and they were really hard to read, but I did the best I could and I believe some folks, somewhere will be grateful that THEY don't have to do it. I may be sticking my neck out by doing this, but Virginia - crilley@eramp.net is the new GA File manager for Pike Co., Barbara is -bstockatlcom.net@mindspr. Both ladies have been really prompt and patient while working with me. GOOD SUBMITTING. Doris Irons Greer caldor@neto.com

    1. [GAPIKE] Allen, Hester, Heflin
    2. Margaret McCleskey
    3. I am looking for information on the famiilies of Robert Allen, Wyatt Hester and William Wyatt Heflin. Robert Allen had a daughter named Mary Ann who married Wyatt Hester. Wyatt died about 1842 and Mary Ann married Thomas B. Wilkinson in 1843. Mary Ann Allen and Wyatt had at least two children: Mary Ann Hester and Robert Allen Hester. Mary Ann Hester married David Green Heflin, s/o William Wyatt Heflin and Mary Rebecca Richards, in Pike Co., GA in 1836. By 1850, the families of Mary Ann Hester and David Green Heflin, William Wyatt Heflin and Mary Rebecca Richards, and Robert Allen Hester and Rhoda Jane Medford were in Cherokee Co., GA. After Mary Rebecca Richards died in about 1860, William Wyatt Heflin is said to have returned to Georgia. The Pike Co. USGENWEB site has a biography of a Robert A. Allen. I do not know if this is the same Robert Allen as the one about whom I am inquiring or not. This biography says that Robert A. Allen is buried in the "family cemetery." Has this cemetery been surveyed? Any information will be greatly appreciated. Margaret McCleskey, Arlington, TX

    2. I will have to double check on this info for you--but to my knowledge there are no existant copies of the older newspapers. The library has some on microfilm but I don't think they go back much farther that 1888--however I will check on that for you and see just what paper did cover this area before that. Stephanie
