    1. [GAPIKE] REGARDING: Heritage Book of Pike Co.AL
    2. Bobbie [Speir] Jarvinen
    3. I received the following message from Kathlyn J. Folmar, in answer to my question to Alpike-L AND Gapike-L (s) regarding the Pike Co "ALABAMA" Heritage Book. (I am clarifying Alabama as opposed to Georgia, because I am embarrassed to say when I ordered and paid for a copy then couldn't find my copy of my order form, I couldn't remember if it was from PIKE Co "Alabama" or "Georgia" - since I am working both counties. Any way.... Kathlyn says she has talked to a "Mrs. Bullard at the Troy Public Library" see her letter to me below. Evidently they are short 15 of the 100 books needed to go to print. Since some members of the lists have requested I let them know what I find out I am writing to the list with this information, because they want to purchase the book or want to know what's up. I wrote to Kathlyn to get the phone number of the library for us out-of-staters, and will send whenever I receive it. Anyhow, maybe some of you are local and can call Mrs. Bullard with any orders you want to place or ask her questions. A few of the people must have seen some of the pre-publication pages of the book and have said "it is well worth the money" and "great information". Thought I'd pass that along too. 3. I have been to, In Scarlett's Steps last year. Its really a lovely place, and the lady has it decorated with a lot of Gone With The Wind items. For the life of me, I can't remember who she said, owned this house. They have pictures of the man and his wife, and she even has some of the ladies clothes, I believe. I have wracked my brain trying to remember more about the history of it, but sorry, I just can't come up with anything else. Becky Carden

    3. I'm sorry, but I have no knowledge of the millers of the Molena area, though I'm sure there were some. I'll forward your message to the Pike County mailing list. Perhaps someone there knows someone you could portray in your boy scout event. Best wishes in your endeavor. Each leader is supposed to pick a character relevant to the history of the area and adopt that personna for the event. I notice there are many mills (Hannah Mills, Lawrences Mill, etc.) in the area and thought I might portray a miller. Could you suggest a miller from the area in the 1800's and point me to where I could develop a biography of the person? Thanks in advance for considering my request. Jim Snyder

    1. [GAPIKE] Dudley Cook - Brown associations
    2. Hi from a new list member, I'm interested in Dudley Cook who lived in Jasper Co. during 1821 land lottery and who drew lot 3-34 in Dooly Co. GA. I'm interested in locating the deed or other disposition of this property. William Brown paid taxes on this property in 1828. William Brown lived in Pike County in 1828. There was a Dudley Cook in Pike Co. about 1840s. I'm not certain if he is the same family who came from Abbeville, SC (1810 census). Any help or clues appreciated. My primary line of research is Brown, Powell, Askew, Worley, King and Junkins. Thank you. Birdcro in Alabama

    3. Wonderful things are happening on the Pike County GenWeb pages. The K's are online for the Pike County Brides index, thanks to Steph's transcriptions. Several new wills and deeds and one marriage record have been added. There are cemetery records I'm still processing. Sam R. Bunn has acquired a copy of the complete Mt. Gilead Baptist Church Cemetery database. The file is large and I'm having difficulty with the html conversion so be patient with me. We do appreciate Mt. Gilead church member Graham Bell who compiled the database, the church for allowing us access and Sam for making the arrangements. Sam has also recently submitted the data for the Ballad/Greene Cemetery. I'll try to get these up as soon as possible. Barbara Smallwood Stock Pike County GenWeb Coordinator

    1. [GAPIKE] question re: 1851 Tax Digest
    2. Hello Georgia Researchers -- HELP! I recently obtained copies of the 1851 tax digest for the 1st-3rd Districts of Coweta Co., GA. I am trying to decipher what the heading say across the top. Between the old time writing and the way the pages were copied, so that some of the info is cut off, I can't figure out what they say. This is as best as I can figure out, they actually run left > right across the top of the page: (1) 1st District / Name of tax payer (2) W Pole (3) Slaves (4) Lands of Qualities (4a) 1 (4b) 2 (4c) 3 (5) Pine (6) No. (7) D's V Section (8) County (9) Bg's V Sulkier (10) Town Lotts (11) No (12) Value (13) Money or Int. If anyone out there has experience with this I sure look forward to hearing back from you! Valerie Johnson Freeman Tustin, California "Genealogy is like playing hide and seek: they hide . . . I seek!!!" P.S. Whenever I do get them transcribed, I will be submitting them to the GA Gen Web Archives :-)

    2. Barbara Smallwood Stock
    3. Lately, I have had a number of new record submissions to the Pike County GenWeb site. I have uploaded several new wills and one deed and will be putting a couple of new records up each evening for a while. I wanted those of you who have recently sent in records to be aware of the situation and to be patient. Isn't this a wonderful problem to have? There will be a special offer coming up in the near future. We haven't worked out all the particulars yet, but there will be an opportunity for you to request photocopies of the pre-1900 Pike County wills listed on our Will Index Page in exchange for a small contribution to help us cover the copy costs for the ongoing Brides Index Project and for the copy costs and postage incurred in filling the will request. Look for an announcement about this later. BTW, Lynn has sent me the marriage index for "K". I'll try to get that up as soon as I can. Women are hard to trace due to the surname change upon marriage. That's what makes the brides index so very important. Barbara Smallwood Stock Coordinator, Pike County GenWeb

    2. Becky, I do not know about the underground railroad, but there is a book called The Cauthen Family History by Maryline Cauthen Westenhaver that covers the Cauthen's from Pike Co. It was printed for the 3rd time in 1981 by Craftmaster Printers, Inc., Opelika, AL. Some of the Cauthen's that still live in Pike Co. (Milner area) let me borrow it several years ago. I just copied the sections that related to our Perkins line, so I do not have any information on your McLoed's. It was a very in depth book as far as covering the Cauthen line and could be helpful to you if you can get hold of a copy. Janet Perkins MS
