Before the execution he made confession that he did kill Lillie Bell Davis, for which crime he was executed. He also said he knocked a white woman in the head but did not know whether or not he killed her. He also said he knocked a woman in the head in LaGrange, Ga., but did not know the result. He also killed a negro in Alabama. Also acknowledged that he had assaulted an old negro woman in Barnesville a few months ago - a short time before he killed Lillie Belle Davis. Sheriff Allen, H.E. 3. Pike-Bleckley County GaArchives Obituaries.....Elliott, James Benjamin January 24, 1928 ************************************************ Copyright. All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/ga/gafiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Lynn Cunningham http://www.genrecords.net/emailregistry/vols/00011.html#0002535 March 13, 2010, 5:20 pm The Pike County Journal, February 24, 1928 Mr. J.B. Elliott of Cochran Passes Mr. J.B. Elliott, prominent churchman, successful farmer, trusted friend, loyal citizen, kind neighbor, beloved husband and father passed suddenly to his reward early last Tuesday morning. Enjoying good health for many years, and with only about a half hour of struggle, Mr. Elliott succumbed to an acute case of indigestion at his home about three miles north of Cochran between three and four o’clock Tuesday morning. He enjoyed a hearty supper the evening before, and no one suspected any indisposition until early Tuesday morning. Arising because of his discomfort at an early hour he entered his wife’s bedroom, who ministered to him with such remedies as were available. Twice his oldest son Zack was sent for the doctor, but ere he could leave the premises, his pain would be lessened and the call for the doctor would be cancelled. Then came the final struggle and the end was at hand. “He had fought the good fight,” now he has “finished his course,” and by all who knew him best it was confidently affirmed, “He has kept the faith.” Mr. Elliottt was 46 years of age, a native of Pike county, but has been a citizen of Bleckley county for the past 19 years. For seventeen years he has been happily married to his devoted wife, formerly Miss Nettie Legg. Four children are left to comfort her, Zack, a son 14 years of age; Grace, the daughter, 12 years old; Marvin, a younger son eight years of age, and little Benjamin, the youngest child, four years old. Three brothers and three sisters are left of the original family of eight: Mr. T.Z. Elliott, of Barnesville, sheriff of the county; Mr. C.C. Elliott, of the county, near Barnesville, and the oldest brother, Mr. J.W. Elliott, of Williamson, Ga. Mrs. Lizzie Phillips, of Dothan, Ala.; Mrs. Emma Harris, of Reidsville, and Mrs. J.W. Sykes, of Barnesville. An older sister preceded him some four years ago. Early after moving to this county (Bleckly [sp]) Mr. Elliott became a member of Evergreen church, and when moving nearer Cochran, he became a member of the First Baptist church of this city. For years he has served as deacon of his church, and at the time of his decease he was the beloved Superintendent of the Sunday School, and also represented his church on the Executive Committee of the Pulaski-Bleckley association. Only last week he spent the greater part of the week representing his Sunday School and church at the Southwide Baptist Sunday School Conference at Greenville, S.C. Few men of the church were so much beloved as Brother Elliott, and none will be missed more. In the home, the church, and the community, he was honored and loved. Who could as for more? The funeral was held by request at the First Baptist church at 11:15 a.m. Wednesday. Many beautiful floral offerings, a house filled with respectful sympathizers, and a spirit of universal sorrow characterized the simple funeral services. Interment was in Cedar Hill cemetery. The deacons of the church served as pall-bearers. Bro. Elliott has passed on to higher service, our loss is Heaven’s gain, and his many admirers have better reason then ever to “Think of the Home over there.” - Cochran Journal (Transcribed 12 March 2010 - Lynn Cunningham) Additional Comments: James Benjamin Elliott b. 18 Sept 1881, Pike County, Ga d. 24 Jan 1928, Bleckley County, Ga. Mrs. Banks is 83 years of age but as spry as a woman of many, many years younger. She does all her house work, cooking, sewing, etc. Miss Beckham was born August 26, 1837 in Monroe county but Mrs. Banks was born near Zebulon, their parents having moved to Zebulon when Miss Beckham was quite small. Their father was Jackson Beckham and their mother was Amelia Henderson of Elbert county before her marriage. Their grandfather was Jimmie Beckham. They had one brother - James Beckham, who lost his life in Virginia in 1863 while serving under Lee. Their sisters were Mary, Eliza, Sallie, Alice and Amelia. During the war all those sisters wove and spun for the Confederate soldiers. Mary and Sallie married men by the name of Medlock and moved to Arkansas. Amelia died when a child. Alice married a man by the name of King, of Tampa Fla. Eliza was never married; she died in Zebulon in 1924. Miss Susie has been with Mrs. Banks since 1923. On February 12, 1927, she fell and has been confined to her bed. She has received the kindest care and attention from Mrs. Banks and other relatives. She is cheerful and always looks on the bright side of life. They went to school at and near Zebulon to Miss Jane Davidson, and Prof. Stewart and daughter. Mrs. S,G, Pope and sisters and Mrs. Dodie Gwyn, Mrs. Mattie Green, Mrs Sallie Howell were among their school-mates. Their mother died in 1857 and their father married again in 1860 to a Mrs. Shepard, who before her first marriage was a Parham of Monroe county. There were two children by this marriage, one died young and the other was Mrs. Bessie Gray Holmes who died in Barnesville. Mrs. Banks was married to Mr. Burwell Banks on April 28, 1867 at Zebulon by Rev. R.A. Seals, pastor of the Zebulon Methodist church. They reared six children: -James of Eufaula, Ala.; Joe, of St. Petersburg, Fla.; Cadesman, of Zebulon; Raphel, who died many years ago; Mrs. Sallie McCoy, who died in Zebulon in July 1922; Mrs. Mary Weaver, of Ackerman, Miss. Mr. and Mrs. Banks first lived with Mr. Banks’ parents at their home which stood where the Baptist church now stands, afterwards they moved into a small house where Mrs. Banks now lives, this house being added to and made a two story building. Mr. Banks died Nov. 20, 1920, after being confined to his room for many years. Miss Susie and Mrs. Banks are loyal members of the Methodist church and always respond cheerfully to the Lord’s work. Miss Susie and Mrs. Banks are two lovable Christian characters whose characteristics are patience, goodness, zeal, courage, fidelity, tenderness and love, and gives yo us characters worthy of example.
