    2. I am also a descendant of Drewry Allen through two of his children, Young Drewry goes to my father, his sister Nancy Allen that married John Yarbrough goes to my mother. I also descend from another Allen line in Pike County, Thomas Jefferson Allen 1803-1870 I found his grave at Century Nelson Church yesterday. I haven't been able to connect the two Allen families. I have a copy of the Allen book written by James Allen in 1965, there is a copy in the Ga State Archives also. Joe Cannafax

    3. In response to Margaret's request, here is my connection to the Allen and Hester families. I am a 4th Great Grandson of Josiah Allen (abt. 1769-abt. 1816) by way of his son, Robert A. "Major" Allen (1792-1876) and wife Frances Hester (of whom I currently know nothing). Was Frances Hester possibly a sister to Wyatt Hester? Anyway, my GG Grandmother was Robert and Frances Allen's daughter, Mary Ann Allen (1824-1865) who was married to William Riley Jones (1807-1869), by way of their daughter, Martha Frances Jones (1850-1927) and her husband, William Taylor Harris (1847-1900). I would appreciate more correspondence on these folks. 3. Hello Valerie, Laura, and List Members, As Alice in Wonderland said, "this just gets curiouser and curiouser"!! I know that Robert A. Allen did have a son by the name of Josiah Young Allen because he was among the Allens and Joneses that migrated to Jackson Parish, LA. Josiah Y. Allen was established on a farm there, but shown as a merchant, on the 1870 census. I have info from the Jackson Parish History book, published about 1985, that his wife was Martha Horton(or Haughton). No birth or marriage dates are given for this couple. In fact, Josiah Young's name is given as Charles Josiah Young Allen in this history. I know descendants of his who are still living in Jonesboro, LA, and they have passed down all three names to sons. I do not believe J. Y. used his first name. J. Y. Allen's wife is Martha on the 1870 Jackson parish census, and they had three kids at the time. I feel they were there quite a bit earlier as I found 2 or 3 markers in a very old cemetery for young children of "J. Y. and M. H. Allen" on them. Can't find my note as to the dates of death just now. I'm sure they were married in the 1840's as the primary subject of this historical sketch, their son Charles Washington Allen, was born in 1849 in GA. My grandfather, son of Mary Ann Allen & William Riley Jones and the grandson of Robert A. Allen, was in the 1870-1872 group to relocate. I don't know the names of other Allens who came with him, but some of these guys and the Jones fellows, moved on to Texas where I've lost track of all of them. I think the marriage records must have either misspelled Josiah Young Allen's name, or there were two Allens marrying women with the same name. There could well be a "Joseph T. Allen", son of the "other" Robert Allen, first cousin of Robert A. Allen. I don't have any facts about the second Robert, but have been told by a lifelong resident of Zebulon that he was definitely there. She descends from Robert A. (called Major Bob), and her deceased husband from the second Robert Allen. They didn't realize they had ties until after marriage. This has become a book, which I didn't intend when I began! Now, I guess the mystery is was there a Joseph T. Allen, son of one Robt. Allen, but not Robert A.? If so, did he also marry a Martha Horton? I'm signing off now because I certainly do not know the answers to those questions!! Thanks for all the input! 1. [GAPIKE] Pike Co., GA -- Allen & Horton
    2. Janell -- OK -- I want to kick myself right now. I am usually VERY picky about making sure I have source information. But for the life of me, I can't figure out why I don't show any for Joseph or my link to Robert as his father. The marriage record came from the Pike Co., GA Gen Web Archives. The URL is: ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/ga/pike/vitals/marriages/grooma.txt It shows: Allen, Joseph T. - Horton, Martha A. in 1842 pg. 60 Since my other source note is: Laura Ranville <lranvill@holt.k12.mi.us> I would e-mail Laura. I bet I got the information from her. Please note, the first letter of her e-mail address is a lower case "L" (for Laura) and not an I. I also found this in my "notes" section: -------------------------------------------- Subj: Re: Horton / "History of Pike Co., GA" Date: 7/8/2001 6:31:28 PM Pacific Daylight Time From: worldlight@goodnews.net (J. As far as I know, by the 1840's the Hortons I am dealing with were all in Pike Co, though I know Pike Co was formed from part of Monroe. But I believe the Monroe Co. Hortons and Pike Co Hortons were two separate and unrelated families. I am also posting this reply to the Pike Co., L -- just to see what others might have to say in response to my potentially wrong information. 1. [GAPIKE] HARRIS AND MANLEY (MANLY) in Pike County
    2. Nancy Wilkerson
    3. My Harris family begins with brothers Leonard, James, Boling and Marion Harris. Leonard received one of the first land draws for Pike County. It appears that before coming to Pike, the family was located in Wilkes County and came to GA from VA. We do not have the names of their parents at this time. Leonard married Anna Baughan, James married Sarah Hudgins and Boling married Mary Ann (Miriam) Kent. We have no record at this time of who Marion married. Leonard is buried at Old Hebron Cemetery (he donated the land for the church and cemetery), Boling and most of his family are buried on their family land. We still do not know where James and Marion are buried. My line is through James, so I am particularly interested in finding someone with links to him, but certainly would like to compare notes with any other Harris researchers. He is first recorded in land records in the 1830's and is listed in the 1830, 1840, 1850, 1860 and 1870 census. He died in the early 1870's. James' son Ruben married Frances Manly in 1846. They had one son, John Wesley Harris and he is my g-grandfather. After the Civil War, John Wesley moved to Texas as many did. Ruben apparently died either before or soon after his birth. I have found land records for the Manly family dating back to the 1830's as well, but have been unable to sort them all out. Frances' mother was named Mary and she had brothers by the name of David, John, and Daniel Manly. Thanks for any help anyone might be able to give. Nancy Harris Wilkerson
