Becky, As far as collecting a pension goes, it doesn't matter where the man lived when he enlisted, where he died, or where his widow lived. She could have filed a request for a widow's pension in AL, or in another state, if she moved elsewhere. My ancestor served from AL, moved to LA, and collected a soldier's pension for a very short time, then his widow received the widow's pension until her death. The problem would be determining what state she may have filed with. It was after 1880 before they began awarding CSA pensions, but I would be surprised that she wouldn't try to collect it. I'm sure everyone in the South knew about the program back then. Maybe she also died before they were set up? I don't know if remarriage would effect her eligibility or not. Your Cardens are like my Spencer and Anna Young--they are in the Witness Protection Program!! Hi Doris, Believe me if it does, this group, and the Carden group, will be the first to know!! You know how these Carden's, and McLeod's, have given us fits!! Becky
Janelle, You asked about a pension! I tried that, and inquired about a pension when I was trying to find info on his service during the Civil War. The Alabama Archives, said, they had no record of a pension request being filed for him. He died around Atlanta, so I don't know whether one would have been filed for Ga., but his wife Nancy, was in Al. until 1880, that we know of. We don't know where she went after that, or where she is buried. Again thank you for your help, and if you come up with any more ideas of where to look let me know. Thank you, Becky Carden
Barbara, Thanks for the information on the maps. I'll have to investigate this! Janelle, Oh yes, I'm on several mailing lists, including the Carden mailing list at rootsweb, and no one on there has been able to find who he belongs to. Some feel, he has to belong to either a John Carden, or a David Carden in Pike Co., and seems as if there has to be a connection to the Andrew Jackson Carden, that he bought this land from 1839, but we just can't find any documentation! Yes, I have the regiment he was in during the Civil War, and there were two more Carden's listed for Hillard's Legion, and we thought this was a lead, but don't think they connect. I've posted to every message board I can think of, and I've joined every mailing list that I thought would help, but to no avail! I just don't know where else to look. Since I don't know who he belonged to, I don't know who his brothers or sisters were, or if he even had any. I was hoping when I got the marriage license it might have the parents names, but that didn't help. I'm just at a dead end, and I just hate to give up! Thanks for trying to help! Becky Carden

Becky, Have you looked for a message board devoted to the surname Carden on either Rootsweb or GenForum? Many of the surname boards also have mailing lists, and I've found some people searching for the same families as mine in this way. Have you posted to GenForum boards? GenCircles has info on lots of different families too, and I've searched for lost ancestors there. Do you have a list of his siblings? If so, try looking for one of them that lived longer, left more records. There is a Civil War board for AL, and that could possibly bring some answers. Several of the various well known Civil War units have their own web sites, and maybe a cousin or brother was also in Hillard's Legion. Do you have the regiment and company he was in? Do you have a pension request form for his wife? If she filed one, they contain a wealth of info, though his parents names are not likely. It should tell you where he was born though, so you could search for census reports just about that time in that county looking for candidates for his folks. Just some ideas of things I have tried that have worked at times for me! Good Luck! Hello everyone, I need some advice, from all you genealogy experts! I have an ancestor, O.H.R. Carden, or sometimes he's listed as Owen N.K. Carden. I know he was born in 1820 in Ga., and I know he bought land from an Andrew Jackson Carden in Pike Co. Ga., in 1839. I know he married Nancy McLeod in 1843 in Pike Co. Ga., and I know they were listed in the 1850 census. I know they left Pike Co. Ga., and after 1854, when Nancy's, we believe father, Alexander McLeod died, who was in Pike Co. Ga. also. I know he died in 1862 in the Civil War, serving with Hillard's Legion. What I do not know, is who his parents were, and I've been looking for going on three years, and I have yet to find any info on who they were. I have a copy of his marriage license, and I have a copy of Alexander McLeod's will, and I have copies of the records of the land transactions between he and Andrew Jackson Carden, and I have some info from the Alabama archives on his service during the Civil War. Can anyone advice, me where to look, to try and determine who is parents were? I've posted to all the message boards, that I can think of, and I haven't had any luck on finding who his parents were. Also, another question, if I went to the Court House in Zebulon, and gave them the info on the land deeds, could they tell me where his land was located, or if I posted that info on here, is there anyone that could tell me? Thanks for any advice or help that anyone can give me, I'm desperate!! Becky Carden, rec@hiwaay.net

Please remember that Lamar County did not exist until 1920 and was formed from a part of Pike County. I don't know if there is a fence. I cannot tell from the road, but I will ask. One of the Historical Society members has property that backs up to this piece of land and he will be keeping an eye on what is done there. I've seen these folks work down here tho, and you would be surprised at what they will do to get away with covering one over. I will try to keep y'all up to date on what happens and rest assured we do have an eye on the situation. Just thought there might be some Simmons who would want to make inquiries that would have more pull than the Society. Menawhile I will see what other information I can garner about the property, the developer and his plans for the entire piece. They bought a fair size tract and plan to subdivide it into 5 pieces I think. I would expect they would have trouble selling the piece containing the cemetery. I'll keep y'all up to date. Steph
I have visited The Rock Ga. twice in the last three years and am still trying to learn the name of a very neglected cemetery located on PIEDMONT ROAD, was formerly located in Pike CO.GA. Is now in Lamar CO.Ga. This Cemetery is located about 3 miles West of "The Rock" on Piedmont Road, on the right hand side of the road just after crossing a low water bridge. There is no sign or name posted, but there is a drive way of about 25 foot and a chain hangs between a very old tree that some one has painted with an orange stripe It crosses the drive so one can not enter . This Cemetery is very over grown and much neglected with graves and stones located in the brush, a complete disgrace to whom ever is suppose to be in charge of it's maintenance. This matter should be made aware of,to some one that is in authority. If I lived in the area, I would clean it up and try to take care of it. I am thoroughly amazed that it has been left to fall in to the shape it is in. There is another Cemetery and Church located about 1/4 mile on down Piedmont Road , on the same side of Piedmont and The Rock Road. (MT.
