    1. [GAPIKE] SMITH / SHEHEE 1866 Pike Co marriage
    2. In researching my SMITH's in Pike Co GA, I found where Thomas A. SMITH, the son of Lawrence and Caroline (GARDNER) SMITH married Josephine A. SHEHEE in Pike Co in 1866. They can be found in the 1870 & 1880 census there. In 1880 it lists Viola HALL living with them too. I believe they are both buried in what is now Lamar Co GA. I don't know if there were any children. Any additional info is greatly appreciated. Thanks, Diane researching: ALLEN, WALKER, SMITH, SULLIVAN, GERMANY, HOWARD, OWEN, BLOUNT.

    3. Virginia Crilley is on vacation, so I will post the new additions to the Pike County Archives. The Pike County, GA - Deeds - J. W. Howard to Martha M. A. Howard caught my interest. Are J.W. and Martha husband/wife? Could Martha M.A. Howard possibly be Matilda Martha Greene Howard who was married to Daniel W. Howard? See Below: Descendants of Daniel W. Howard 1 [1] Daniel W. 1. [GAPIKE] Newspaper
    2. I'm not sure if the newspaper was called the Journal or the Reporter--or exactly how far back it goes. The oldest are on microfilm--I think that includes the 1870's and can be seen at the library in Zebulon. The others are in large books at the courthouse. I believe someone told me those oldest papers didn't have obits the way we think of them. I wanted some for the Historical Society newsletter and I was informed there weren't any in those on microfilm. But I have not yet checked it out for myself. The various towns did have social columns in the early 1900's tho. And those occasionally mentioned weddings. Steph

    1. [GAPIKE] newspaper help
    2. I just wanted to thank everyone for their assistance in helping me to find the local newspaper for our Pike Co in the 1870's. I've gotten some good leads. As always, ya'll are very generous. Sincerely, Diane Allen Cooper researching: WALKER, SULLIVAN, HUGULEY, SMITH, GERMANY and ALLEN

    3. UGA has Pike County newspapers on microfilm: http://www.libs.uga.edu/gnp/titlelist.html Click on Begin Search; under Cities R-Z, choose Zebulon. The library in Zebulon has films from 1888 to ?? I do not know of any earlier Pike County newspapers. Lynn

    1. [GAPIKE] Moody Bible
    2. This was published in the Dec 1980 issue of "Norma's Coweta Chatter," a quarterly publication for those interested in Coweta Co., GA genealogy (page 51). I believe them to be the children of Benjamin Moody & Sybilla "Sibbie" Westmoreland. I have no idea where the bible records came from to the gentleman that sent in the query, but I thought they might be helpful to anyone working on the Moody & Westmoreland families. I have Mr. Cooper's complete address (from 1980) if anyone would like to try contacting him. E-mail me privately and I will send it to you. 1. Re: [GAPIKE] Pike Newspapers
    2. Try these papers for Pike County records: "The Griffin Daily News" on-line @ http://www.griffindailynews.com/ I think in the past it was known as the "THE GRIFFIN WEEKLY NEWS" &/or "THE GRIFFIN WEEKLY NEWS & SUN" Griffin is the county seat for Spalding Co., GA. It is in the part of Spalding Co. that was originally in Pike Co., GA. Parts of Pike Co, Fayette Co, & Henry Co were used to create Spalding Co in 1851 I find that a lot of records pertaining to Coweta Co. & Meriwether Co., GA were published in the old Griffin newspapers, so I am sure you would have the same luck with Pike Co. 3. Thanks, Larry for this answer. Maybe others could mention other newspapers that Pike County might have been covered in. Upson County had these. The early issues are not complete, but beginning in l870 all issues are on microfilm. They're on microfilm in Thomaston Archives as well as U of GA Upson Pilot (Weekly which existed from 1858-1864?) Microfilm covers Dec 2, 1858-Jan 11, 1862 Thomaston Herald (later Georgia Herald) (weekly) Dec 9, 1869-1879? Upson Enterprise (weekly 1878-1879) Microfilm: Mar 26, 1878 - Nov 15, 1879. Thomaston Times Nov 22, 1879 (Early issues called Upson Co Pilot) From: "Lanny Cauthen" <lcauthen@mindspring.com> To: "Crilley" <varcsix@hot.rr.com> Subject: Re: [GAPIKE] 1870 Newspaper Pike Co Date: Fri, 9 Aug 2002 20:31:20 -0400 X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook Express 6.00.2600.0000 I don't know why UGA doesn't have Pike Co. newspapers on microfilm. But recently I went to the library in Zebulon, and the librarian told me that the earliest newspaper in their collection was from 1888. She didn't believe that Pike Co. had a newspaper before then. Until 1920 Barnesville was in Pike Co. I believe some of their newspapers are on microfilm. Also, nearby Griffin has newspapers which date earlier. Lanny Cauthen Virginia Crilley
