    3. Pike County Times-Journal Zebulon, Ga., Friday, February 17, 1905 (Transcribed by Lynn Ballard Cunningham 9/5/02) Death of Mrs. Fossett The death angel came to the home of Columbus Fossett Monday at 9 o’clock a.m. and took from the loved ones the wife and mother. It is said that death loves a shining mark and this is eminently true in this case. She was a devoted wife a loving and true mother and a devoted Christian. “Her children rise up and call her blessed, her husband also praises her.” After a touching and appropriate talk and the beautiful burial services of her church by Brother Weathers, we laid her body to rest in the old cemetery at Salem to await the resurrection of the just and commend the sorrowing and bereft family to “The God of all grace.” May he bless them in this their sorrows. 1. [GAPIKE] Memorial Frank L. Crenshaw
    2. Lynn B. Cunningham
    3. Pike County Times-Journal Zebulon, Ga., Friday, February 10, 1905 (Transcribed by Lynn Ballard Cunningham 9/5/02) A Georgia Hero The following editorial which appeared in Tuesdays Constitution will be of interest to the many friends and relatives of Captain Frank L. Crenshaw in this county where he lived for several years and married the daughter of Judge E.M. Eppinger of Molena. Captain Frank L. Crenshaw, the gallant young Georgian who lost his life in the Filipino ambuscade on the 5th of June 1900, is one of the state’s most notable contributions to that quota of bright names, such as Bagley, Hobson and Blue, which gloriously illustrated Southern bravery in the Spanish-American war. The untimely death of this officer was all the more tragic, since he had been nominated by the President for the brevet rank both of major and lieutenant colonel of volunteers, for distinguished conduct in action. His personal and military qualities were such as there is no doubt that had he survived the insurrection these signal honors would have been eclipsed by deeds of greater bravery and fidelity. The government has further recognized Captain Crenshaw’s gallant services by designating one of its permanent fortifications by his name. It will be remembered that but a few days ago, his colonel, William E. Birkhimer, wrote The Constitution commending this action and expressing the high esteem in which the young man had been held in the regiment. Following Captain Crenshaw’s death, Colonel Birkhimer issued an official order of which the following tribute is an extract: He inspired his company with his own indomitable spirit, it following him cheerfully, knowing not fatigue, through morass or over mountain in quest of the foe. It was in one of the engagements incident to this life of constant scouting that he received the wound [which] it is supposed caused his death. He died like the soldier he was. His example incites to gallant deeds and devotion to duty, however arduous. It is left to us to emulate that example. As a mark of respect to his memory the officers of the regiment will wear a net of crepe upon the sword hilt for the period of thirty days.

Allen died at her home in Williamson last Sunday morning. She was the life long companion of Judge R.H. Allen, one of the oldest and best loved citizens of the county. She was 81 years of age and had been married to her husband with whom she had so happily lived for over 60 years. It must seem hard to “Uncle Bob” as he is familiarly known, to have spent the many years so blissfully in her companionship, and now must spin out his few remaining days alone. Mrs. Allen had been a devout member of the Methodist church practically all her life and had lived a consecrated devoted life. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. C.V. Weathers in the Methodist church in Williamson last Monday and she was buried in the afternoon in the cemetery at that place. She leaves “Uncle Bob” and several children to mourn her death. Pike County Times-Journal Zebulon, Ga., Friday, January 20, 1905 (Transcribed by Lynn Ballard Cunningham 9/5/02) Laetitia News Miss Rosa Beauchamp, of Williamson, opened her school here Wednesday with a good attendance. We are glad to secure her services as a teacher. She has twenty-five in attendance and more to come in at once. We are sorry to note the death of the three months old child of Mr. and Mrs. E.M. McLeroy. M.S. Williamson has just purchased a fine mule. I.W. McLeroy, R.F.D. carrier from Griffin spent Sunday with the family of R.R. McLeroy. Babe Green has moved form the Green place to the Nelson place, near Williamson. John F. Green of Griffin was here Thursday on business. Mr. and Mrs. W.C. Kendrick visited relatives at Orchard Hill Sunday. Mrs. Annie Pitts of Carrollton is the guest of friends and relatives here. Miss Mattie Pitts and Lafayette Buchanan were the guests of Miss Lillian Williamson Sunday. The farmers in this section are a little blue over the price of cotton. But we propose to reduce the acreage and the use guano and try to raise all of the stuff we need at home and make our cotton a surplus crop.

    3. Pike County Times-Journal Zebulon, GA, Friday April 14, 1905 (Transcribed by Lynn Ballard Cunningham 9/5/02) Burial of Col. J.H. Baker A Brief Sketch of his Life Col. John Harris Baker died at his home near Zebulon last Friday after an illness of two months. He was taken sick of pneumonia and partially recovered but the disease got hold of him more strongly on the second attack and his physicians and family had despaired of hope for his recovery for some time previous to his death. All that could be doe was done for him. He was surrounded by his eight living children at his death, their seniority being as follows: Mrs. M.V. Allen of Zebulon; J.T. Baker of Zebulon; W.H. Baker of Griffin; E.H. Baker of Zebulon; (Mrs. Lura Carreker of Hollonville, being next in age, but dead) Mrs. C.P. Jones of Hapeville; Mrs. D.M. Willis, of Molena; Mrs E.E. Beckham of Jonesboro; and Mrs J.L. Wells of Atlanta. His wife who was Miss Louise Trice, daughter of Rev. Thos. C. Trice of this county, died in 1885. Col. Baker was born in Warren County in 1824, being nearly 81 years old at the time of his death. His parents moved to this county when he was an infant and settled at the place where I.W. Williamson now resides at Williamson. After he grew to manhood, he settled near Zebulon which was his home until his death. Col. Baker was a veteran of two wars, having served with distinction in the Mexican as well as the civil war. When the civil war broke out he raised Co. A of the Confederate Guards in Zebulon and was made its captain. He soon became a major of the 18th Georgia Regiment, then lieutenant colonel and later colonel of that famous regiment. For the last nine months of the war, he was in command of Gen. Evans old brigade, when Evans was promoted to be a major general, and he had been chosen as a brigadier general, but as no commissions were sent out for several months previous to the close of the war, he never received his as a general though he had been selected as a brigadier and had been serving in that capacity for several months. He served several terms in the general assembly of Georgia both as representative and senator, being nominated each time without his solicitation and elected without opposition. He made an able and conscientious legislator. The funeral services occurred at Zebulon Baptist church Sunday morning at 10 o’clock. A large number of old friends and comrades assembled to pay their last respects to the memory of their old friend and brother. The church building was more than full. Members of his old Co. and Reg. from adjoining towns and counties came. The services were conducted by Rev. C.M. Brittain, the pastor of his church, assisted by Gen. Clemant A. Evans. After the funeral sermon by Rev. Mr. Brittain, a memorial service was held and Gen. Evans in eloquent and touching words attested to the courage and character of his old friend. He paid a beautiful tribute to his record as a soldier and a citizen, relating how kind, thoughtful and considerate he was of his men, how respectful he was to his superior officers in obeying orders and that while he was on duty he was Col. Baker but when not he was John Baker. Short talks were made by Judge E.F. Dupree, Dr. J.B. Matthews and Mr. Reeves of Upson County. His body was interred in the Baptist cemetery by the side of his wife. The numerous friends of his and his family extend sincere sympathy. ------------------------------------- Descendants of John Harris Baker (Additions/corrections welcomed.) 1 John Harris Baker b: 07 August 1824 in Warren County, Georgia d: 07 April 1905 in Pike County, Georgia ... +Louisa A. 3. Karen, I think the folks who put the 1827 land Lottery lists on the web are working on other years as we speak. I will try to let the Pike list know as soon as I find out. In the meantime, the State of Georgia Archives has a list of Revolutionary War Veterans who were "fortunate drawers" of land for all of the lotteries on their web site: http://www.sos.state.ga.us/archives/oe/rv_summary.htm You might find someone there. 1. [GAPIKE] Neal, GA ???
    2. On the road between Concord and Molina was the town of Neal. Does anyone know of any cemeteries besides the Baptist Church cemetery that would be considered to be in Neal? Has the church kept records of who is buried in their cemetery? I'm looking for WALKER's and SMITH's of Pike Co. Appreciate any help. Diane Allen Cooper
