    3. Cindy, Do you have any information on Jasper Sims of Pike Co. that appears on the 1870 census roll? I have researching W.T. Presley and he is living in that household at that time --I'm trying to discover the relationship, if any. 3. Lynn, Thank you for your many contributions to this list. To other Jones researchers: I don't know how, but I believe my husband is related to this line of Jones. I'm currently researching his paternal ancestry, and the Jones ancestor is on his maternal side. Nonetheless, I'd be glad to share what I've got so far with others researching the Jones family. And Lynn, I promise the next time I post something for Carroll county that could be cross-posted here, I'll share here, too. Judy who's husband descends from Arlin Jones, but who's genealogy program just went belly up and who's going to take that as a sign to go to bed. :-)

    1. [GAPIKE] 1889 Isaac Jones Lightening Story
    2. Lynn B. Cunningham
    3. Pike County, Journal Zebulon, GA., Tuesday, July 2, 1889 Passing Strange Commissioner Jones was in town last week and related one of the strangest freaks of lightening that we have ever read or heard of. The story runs about this way: Isaac, the little eight year old son of Mr. S.G. Jones was seeking shelter from a rain under a persimmon tree. He was leaning against the persimmon tree when it was struck about 8 feet from the ground by lightening. The main current passed down the tree to the ground, tearing up the roots and ground ‘round about fearfully. The brim of Isaac’s hat was inclined to flop and a iron wire was stitched around the rim to hold it up. This wire was torn out of the hat, which was otherwise unhurt, and has never been found to this day. After demolishing the brim stay, the lightening proceeded down the little fellow’s back, and those who have seen the clothes worn by Isaac on that occasion say they seem as if they had been run through a 40 saw gin. What clothes were left on him caught on fire and burned him, which was the only injury sustained. At this time the burns have entirely healed and the boy is as well as ever. One who has knowledge of the freaks of electrical currents says that the wire on the boy’s hat is all that saved him, as it tended to destroy, to a great degree, the force of the current and protect the body. (Transcribed 10/14/02 Lynn Cunningham) Note: "S.G." is Seaborn Gideon Barnes Jones, son of Isaac Willingham Jones and Mary Emeline Wadsworth. Seaborn Jones and Mary Clayton were the parents of little Isaac Willingham Jones (named for his grandfather). Little Isaac was born 29 Jan 1880 and died 13 April 1920. This branch of the Jones family went to Alabama.

    1. [GAPIKE] 1889 Mary Elizabeth Cochran Obit
    2. Lynn B. Cunningham
    3. Pike County, Journal Zebulon, GA., Tuesday, May 21, 1889 Concord Concord, May 16 - Died near here on the evening of the 9th inst., Mrs. M.E. Cochran, age 55 years. In early life she attached herself to the Presbyterian church and adorned her profession by an upright walk and a godly conversation, and is doubtless today on the other side of the river resting under the shade. Mrs. Cochran did not fear death but often expressed a willingness to die. She said she was willing and waiting for the Master’s call to meet him in the skies where consumption and emaciation are unknown. For several months preceding her death she was kindly cared for by her devoted and only son, her sisters and brothers. The deceased leaves an aged father, two sisters and three brothers to mourn her loss. A large crowd attended her interment at Friendship church. The funeral was preached by Rev. Dr. Dubose and assisted by Revs. Peden and Hemphill. It was the good fortune of the writer to have known the deceased for near forty years, and always knew her to be kind, charitable and Christian like. That we all emulate her good example, is the wish of her devoted friends. – J.A.W. Are there any records on who was the previous owner of the 800 acre of land that he owned? I'm asking because I believe that my great great grandfather, Asbury Parks was owned by Samuel and his family before him. Any information would help and would be GREATLY appreciated. Parks of Pike County Good morning Lynn, I am interested in knowing if you have any information on Samuel C. Parks of Pike County from around 1866. Are there any records on who was the previous owner of the 800 acre of land that he owned? I'm asking because I believe that my great great grandfather, Asbury Parks was owned by Samuel and his family before him. Any information would help and would be GREATLY appreciated. Have a fantastic week. Thanks, Rainy L. Parks -----Original Message----- From: Lynn B. Over 1500 soldiers and their families met at Concord for the event. This event was chronicled in the Pike County newspaper. It took up 4 columns in the paper and when transcribed, was 6 pages long. For this reason, I didn't want to chop it up and post it on the mailing list a little at the time. So we have posted it directly to the archives. If you are interested in this bit of history, I invite you to go directly to the archives to read it. The the URL is listed below: ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/ga/pike/newspapers/veterans.txt Also, for the ones of you who are new on the list, there are new archived files located at the addresses listed below. These files are copies of the items posted to the list previously http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/ga/pike/obits.htm http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/ga/pike/newspapers.htm http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/ga/pike/vitals.htm Special thanks to Debra Crosby for her help in posting our files to the archives. 1. [GAPIKE] Re: James Littleton Manley Family Bible
    2. I am a descendant of James Littleton Manley and have this Bible. I have a brick wall: Daniel Manley b. 1819 In Va. (presumably the father of this James Littleton Manley ) who m. Elizabeth Montgomery 11 Jun 1840 in Pike Co. Ga. I find land transactions made by Daniel thru the mid 1840's, but nothing later. Only know that Elizabeth Manley and James L. 2/12 were listed on the 1850 census as living with David Manley, who we believe is Daniel's brother. ? Is Daniel James Littleton's father? Did Daniel per chance go to Texas in 1849-1850 when some of the other Manley's went to Texas? Also, we have ?'s as to who David, Daniel, etc.'s father was - Abner? Any information will be GREATLY APPRECIATED! Also, ANY suggestions where to look from here. Not on Mortality list.
