Pike County, Journal Zebulon, GA., Tuesday, November 5, 1889 Maj. J.Q. Wood, who for the past eight years has been an alderman and a prominent citizen of Griffin, died last Wednesday night. Pike County, Journal Zebulon, GA., Tuesday, November 12, 1889 The Poor Farm Let Last Tuesday the county commissioners let the poor farm to Mr. J.T. Ballard for 1890. Mr. Ballard is a very successful farmer and promises to put the farm on a paying basis. The terms of the contract are as follows: Ballard is to pay $220.00 as rent for the farm; he is to cultivate 10 acres of the land for the exclusive benefit of the paupers; gives a $500 bond for the faithful performance of duty, etc., and is to receive $15 per month for service as superintendent of paupers. Jones disposed of his household and kitchen furniture last Wednesday, and will leave with his family next Monday for Sand Mountain, Ala., where he expects to make his future home. Mr. H.G. Means of Meansville to Miss Estelle Holsey of Stewartsville, all of this county. Mr. Means is a young man of high moral character and one of the best business young men in the county, while Miss Holsey is one of the fairest of the fair. November the 27th is the day set for the happy event. The marriage of one of Zebulons girls to a young man in the country is also spoken of as an event of the 27th inst. Pike County, Journal Zebulon, GA., Tuesday, November 26, 1889 Mrs. J.L. Driver we learn is at the point of death in Atlanta. Her relatives here say that she cannot live much longer. This is very sad, indeed, to the many friends of this good lady in Zebulon. Later Since the above was written a telegram was received her stating that Mrs. Driver died yesterday evening. Pike County, Journal Zebulon, GA., Tuesday, November 26, 1889 Mr. James Buckalo [Buckelew], formerly of this county, but now of Carroll [County], was shaking hands with his Zebulon friends last week. Within the past four years he has partially lost his hearing. (Transcribed 10/16/02 Lynn Cunningham) Note: James Buckelew lost his hearing during the Civil War. From an affidavit submitted by Robert W. Ballard for James Buckelew who was applying for a pension as a former Confederate soldier: Personally came before me, R.W. Ballard of the County of Carroll, State of Georgia, who being duly sworn, says that on the 10th day of May 1864, he was commanding Co. H. 44th Regiment Ga. Volunteers and was in 8 or 10 feet of J.L. Buckelew, when he recd the injury which caused his deafness. Ever since said Buckelew has lived in Carroll, he could not understand anything, however loud, without the use of an Ear Trumpet.

Mr. Brown was a most highly respected citizen and his death is much regretted.
