    1. [GAPIKE] 1891 Hartley/Brooks Marriage
    2. Lynn B. Cunningham
    3. Pike County, Journal Zebulon, GA., Friday, May 8, 1891 Weaver Wavelets We had the pleasure last Sunday of witnessing the marriage of Mr. Charlie Hartley from near Zebulon to Miss Ida Brooks who has been visiting relatives near here. The groom is an energetic young man and the bride is an intelligent young lady. We wish them a long life and much happiness. Also: Jeff Davis Institute Notes Of course we were all surprised! Mr. Charley Hartley who was a student here May 1st was married to Miss Ida Brooks last Sunday May 3rd. The bridegroom was only eighteen years of age, and the bride sixteen. The ceremony was performed by justice of the peace P.R. Coker, at the residence of Mr. Ross near New Hope church. We know it will go rather hard with the new bridegroom to leave the shade of the schoolroom, where he has been all year, and go right into the broiling hot sun of the cotton field, his complexion that has been so fair under the roof will darken beneath the rays of a burning sun. Both would do better to come to school. We would be glad to have them now, it is never too late for knowledge. Though rather young for their position in life, we hope for them a happy future. 2. Lynn B. Cunningham
    3. Pike County, Journal Zebulon, GA., Friday, January 16, 1891 Pensions for Widows The following circular was issued Monday with the reference to pensioning of confederate widows. The matter is one of general interest: State of Georgia, Executive Department, Atlanta, Georgia, January 8, 1890 [?]. – In answer to numerous inquiries, and in order to explain the law of pensioning certain widows of confederate soldiers, the following points are mentioned.: 1. The law provides a pension of $100 per year. 2. The pension year will begin on 15th of February 1891. 3. The payments will be made upon proper proofs presented to the executive department, in compliance with the laws and forms to be furnished through the ordinaries of the state. 4. These blanks will be prepared during the latter part of March and sent to the ordinaries. 5. The departments will begin about the 1st of April, 1891, and will be for the pension year ending February 15, 1892. 6. The pension is only payable to certain classes of widows. a. Those whose husbands were killed in service. b. Those whose husbands died in the army of wounds or disease contracted in the service. c. Those whose husbands went to the army and have never been heard from since the war. d. Those whose husbands were wounded in the army and have since died from the effects of the wounds. e. Those whose husbands contracted disease in the service, and who, after the war, died of the disease caused by the service. 7. No widow is entitled unless she was the wife of the soldier during the war and has never remarried. 8. The law does not provide for any one living out of the state of Georgia, or who did not live in the state at the date of the act. 9. The facts to establish a claim must be substantiated by the testimony of three witnesses who personally known [sp] of the enlistment of the husband and his death, and the immediate cause of the death. 10. Widows who have married since the service of their husbands in the army are not entitled. 11. There is no need of employing a lawyer or other agents to attend to this claim. The department will furnish full and specific instructions, and will give ample opportunity to every claimant. By order of the governor. W.H. Harrison, Secretary Executive Department. 3. Pike County, Journal Zebulon, GA., Friday, February 6, 1891 A Pleasant Home Last Sunday in company with clever John H. Milner we spent the afternoon at the pleasant home of Mr. Josiah Allen. Mr. Allen has just moved out from Griffin, where he enjoyed a very lucrative position, with his brother-in-law, Mr. E.J. Flemister, and is now giving his personal attention to his large plantation. Mr. Allen’s home is presided over by his estimable wife, a queenly little lady who understands the art of making [a] home happy. Magnificent paintings, that would reflect credit upon the best efforts of a professional artist adorn the parlor walls and attest the taste of Mrs. Allen with the brush. Their home is blessed by two happy bright-eyed children and then there is grandma and grandpa, – the latter being the 16 year old youngster known everywhere as Judge Bob Allen. Upon the whole it is a pleasant, happy home, and we trust it may remain so for many happy years. (Transcribed 10/17/02 Lynn Cunningham)
