Ryan of Columbus, GA by V.M. Fambro, of this place. From what we can learn of the difficulty, it was unsought on the part of Ryan--the whole affair was commenced and carried on to a shooting point by Fambro. Mr. Ryan is a leader of the Brass band of Columbus and was in this place teaching a band. He seems to be doing very well this morning and is thought not to be in much danger, unless inflamation should take place. The ball entered his left breast just below his collar bone and is thought to be lodged in the ribs or shoulder-blade, the physician probed it about 3 inches, but could not extract the ball. Fambro has fled.
Thank you for the posting on the below. This is my family. We come through James D and Martha Shivers. Maybe, someone out there can solve our new mystery. I have 2 death dates for James D. August 1, 1888 (in famiy Bible) and July 10, 1889 (listed as death date in Marthas pension records). Also, where is he buried? There are several unmarked graves, at the Shivers/Vaughan Cem., and at the William J and Maggie Segraves Cem(small enclosed cem), both of these cemeteries are on Shackleford Road. Also, does anyone know the maiden name of Jane W.?????? Was she a Whittington?????? Martha died in Cook County, GA and is buried at Eldorado Baptist Church Cemetery, Eldorado, GA. Any help gladly appreciated. Carolyn Elkins ----- Original Message ----- From: "Lynn B. Pike County, Journal Zebulon, GA., Friday, October 23, 1891 The Recent Court Violators of the Law to be Punished The Court has done its work. After a two weeks session, Pike Superior court closed one of the most interesting terms, probably, known in her history on Saturday. We havent the space to give a full account of the proceedings of the criminal and civil cases that were tried and disposed of, but will make a brief mention of those of most importance. One of the most interesting trials that came up was that of Wesley Quick, indicted for the murder of Mr. George Coggin two weeks ago. The jury was out only a short time when they arrived upon a verdict of guilty, without recommendations for mercy. He was sentenced to be hanged December 14, publicly within one mile of the courthouse. Quick was ably represented by Cols. Stewart and Dupree, but the minds of the jury were steadfast as to his guilt. The condemned man is about 22 years old, and God only knows what prompted him to commit the awful crime for which he is to die for. The case of the state vs. Oscar Harden for the killing of his wife about two years ago, was another of much interest. Harden, it will be remembered, is the man who claimed to have been a distance of about 200 yards when he shot at his wife without the least intention or expectation of hitting her. The jury in this case returned the following verdict: We the jury, find the defendant guilty of involuntary manslaughter in the commission of a lawful act through culpable negligence. He was sentenced to twelve months in the penitentiary and six months confinement in jail, or he may be relieved from [the] penitentiary sentence upon the payment of $500 and all cost of the prosecution and paying all jail fees for the six months he is to be confined. Some thought this a rather hard sentence, while others think he was lucky to get off this light. The trial of Charley Trice for the murder of his brother, was postponed until the next session of court, on account of Judge Hall, his attorney, feeling unwell when it was called. Ike Williams plead guilty to an assault, and was sent up for four years. Jack Harp was found guilty of an assault with intent to murder, and was sentenced to the chaingang for a period of four years. Charlie Willis pleaded guilty to a charge of bigamy. Two years Hiram Park, charged with an assault with intent to murder, plead guilty to assault, and was released by a payment of $100 and cost. John Jenkins and Smart Blalock was found guilty of disturbing divine worship. Jenkins paid $50 and cost and Blalock will go up for 10 months. Robert Harris, for carrying concealed weapon, plead guilty. Paid $30 and cost. (Transcribed 10/21/02 Lynn Cunningham)
Pike County, Journal Zebulon, GA., Friday, October 9, 1891 A Terrible Tragedy In Which Geo. Coggin is Killed and His Brother Badly Wounded The citizenship of Hollonville and community was shocked Saturday evening over a fatal cutting affair. A young man by the name of F.W. Quick is charged with having done the cutting. He is about 24 years old and has been in the employ of Mr. D.M. Coggin for some time past as a farm hand. On Saturday evening George and his brother W.O. Coggin, were riding together in a buggy, and, on passing the house of Mr. D.M. Coggin, stopped and called him out to them. When he came out, George asked him something about why he had him (George) subpoenaed as a witness. From this some very warm words ensued, and we learn that George and D.M. Coggin were pulling off their coats when young Quick who had watched the proceedings from the front veranda, and knew nothing of the trouble, ran out with a large pocket knife and thrust it in Georges breast, cutting one of his ribs in twain, and penetrating his heart. The blade of the knife is three inches in length and, of course, produced instant death. W.O. Coggin in endeavoring to help his brother received an ugly and very painful wound on the neck. The wound was inflicted on the muscle which protects the jugular vein, and it will be seen that he also made a very narrow escape from tragic death. Quick was arrested and brought here last Sunday where he is now in jail. His case will probably be tried at this term of court. It is reported that he is getting in shape to work the insanity dodge. The Coggin family of this county is a large one and stands well in the estimation of the public. The following is the verdict of the coroners jury which held an inquest on last Sunday: We the jury having been panelled {sp} and sworn to inquire into and find the cause of the death of G.L. Coggin, now lying dead before us, and after having all the evidence before us possible, find that the deceased came to his death by a wound in the chest inflicted by F.W. Quick, and in our opinion is murder. (Transcribed 10/20/02 Lynn Cunningham) Note: D.M. Coggin is Doctor M. Coggin (He was not a doctor, this was his given name) G.L.
