The Pike County Journal. Zebulon, Pike Co., Ga., Friday, September 15, 1893 A Sad Death Miss Nannie Willis of Molena died very suddenly last Saturday at 6 oclock p.m. She was on the way to the home of her cousin, Mrs. L.W. Godard and seeing that she was likely to get wet ran a short distance to the house. Before she reached the door, the rain began to fall and she was sprinkled pretty thoroughly. She fell on the front doorstep exhausted and was carried into the house where she died within thirty minutes of congestion of the heart and stomach. Miss Willis was a sister of Mrs. J.T. Moore of this place, Mrs. H.G. Jordan of Molena and Mrs. M.K. Jordan. Miss Willis was forty-five years of age and her innate goodness of heart impressed itself upon all with whom she was associated. Her remains were interred at the Jordan burying ground near Molena last Monday, Rev. J.W. Beck conducting the funeral. The Pike County Journal. Zebulon, Pike Co., Ga., Friday, September 15, 1893 Walter H. Rhett, one of the brightest members of the Atlanta bar committed suicide last Tuesday by shooting himself through the heart with a pistol. Drink and financial troubles are said to have been the main cause of the rash act. Mrs. Rhett, was born and raised in Zebulon, where she yet has many friends. Her maiden name was Miss Annie Raymond Reid. She was a daughter of Dr. Robert Reid and a grand daughter of Dr, Caldwell. (Transcribed 10/28/02 Lynn Cunningham)

I found a few tidbits, since I find sometimes find "spillover" for Pike & Spalding Counties in Upson Co. All obits are sad, but occasionally one, even from 109 years ago, touches your heart. We have read of several women burned when their clothing caught on fire - a hazard of their times, some from cooking on open hearths. But this poor lady not only was burned, she lost her baby through a miscarriage at the same time. This one makes me very sad. ---------------- The Pike County Journal. Zebulon, Pike County, Georgia: January 6, 1893 We regret very much to chronicle the death of Mrs. H.C. Allen, nee Georgia Parker, which occurred at her home at Orchard Hill last week. Her clothing caught on fire in the stove room and she was horribly burned before assistance reached her. Death relieved her suffering in about two days. A mothers accident was precipitated by the burning which added additional agony. The broken hearted husband, who is a son of R.H. Allen of this county, has our sincere sympathy. The Pike County Journal. Zebulon, Pike County, Georgia: January 6, 1893 Mrs. C.L. Butler of Weaver died yesterday morning of pluero-pneumonia. She had been suffering from an attack of pneumonia for two weeks and it was thought until Tuesday that her condition was favorable. Zebulon, Pike County, Georgia: January 27, 1893 Mr. Steve LeSuer of Liberty Hill vicinity died very suddenly on Sunday morning and was buried on Tuesday at Midway with Masonic honors. The Pike County Journal. Zebulon, Pike County, Georgia: February 3, 1893 Capt. A.S. Allen gave us a pleasant call Wednesday and paid for five copies of The Journal for twelve months which he sends to his children in Texas and Arkansas. There are very few men who stand higher in the estimation of his fellow citizens than Capt. Allen and we are proud of all such citizens. He directs us this year to send his old brother-in-law Wm. M. She was one of Pikes first settlers and among the first members of Red Oak Church. Mrs. Rivers has many friends and relatives here the Yarbroughs, Harpers, Hortons, Pattons and Scotts. The Pike County Journal. Zebulon, Pike County, Georgia: September 1, 1893 Mrs. McLeroy Dead Mrs. Caroline McLeroy died at her home this county Friday afternoon. The deceased was 80 years of age, and for more than half a century had been an active member of the Baptist church. She was the mother of Esquire R.R. McLeroy, so well and favorably known in Middle Georgia. A large circle of friends and relatives including several children will mourn the death of this Christian mother and friend. Graham and wife of Milner as it does not appear that he was authorized by law to do so. His account for this service has been cut down from $92 to $36 and the latter amount is what he now contends for.
