    2. Lynn B. Cunningham
    3. The Pike County Journal. Zebulon, Pike County, Georgia, October 11, 1895 J.C. McMichael Dead Mr. J. [John] C. McMichael, one of Atlanta’s prominent newspaper men passed away yesterday. His death was expected, as he has been extremely low for several weeks. Yesterday all hopes of recovery were lost. Mr. McMichael is well known throughout the state, having been in the newspaper business for a number of years. He leaves four children. The oldest son, Clark McMichael, is now attending the Boy’s High School, and is a bright young man. It was five years ago that Mr. McMichael came to Atlanta from Barnesville, Ga. He was a wide-awake newspaper man, and was one of the owners of the Atlanta Herald, whose short history is well known. After the Herald went down, he began work on the Christian Index, which paper he has edited for four years successfully. Mr. McMichael was one of the heroes of the late war and was in some of the more prominent battles. He was at Fort Sumter, when the bombardment began, and was one of the few survivors of that terrible conflict. At the battle of Green Pond, he received six wounds, two of which were thought to be mortal. He was [the] first editor of The Thomaston Herald, which paper he ran successfully for a number of years. Later on he bought The Barnesville Gazette and ran it in connection with the Herald. He made both of these papers influential in his section of the country, and was regarded as a successful newspaper man. The above is from the Atlanta Constitution of Wednesday. Capt. McMichael was buried in Barnesville on Wednesday. The funeral service was conducted by Dr. Henry McDonald. (Transcribed 11/10/02 Lynn Cunningham) Note: At Zebulon Road Cemetery, Lamar (formerly Pike) County: McMichael, J.C., b. 25 Mar 1844, d. 15 Oct 1895 Also (possibly a parent): McMichael, C.E., b. 8 Jan 1825, d. 16 May 1880

    3. This is a special thanks to Joe Cannafax for sharing this great resource with our list. As I read through the various postings I see many familiar names. These transcriptions not only place our ancestors in Pike, but pinpoint exact dates as they made their land transactions. This is valuable research information. Also, Debra is placing them in the archives, so if you missed one, check there: http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/ga/pike/land.htm Good job, Joe. Thanks from all of us! 3. Thanks for the information Valerie, by all means please let me know if anyone is certain of this cemetery and I'll certainly update the name on the Archives. I will also be happy to do my best to post the photos so they can be shared by future researchers! Just let me know! Debra Crosby ----- Original Message ----- From: VCJFreeman@aol.com To: GAPIKE-L@rootsweb.com ; poohbos@poohbos.com Sent: Monday, November 11, 2002 5:41 PM Subject: [GAPIKE] Can someone clarify the cemetery -- Hollonville or Coggin Barbara -- Thank you for taking the time from your day to visit the cemeteries and for giving them a visual life for me. I can't wait to see the photos. Maybe Debra can figure a way to add them to the Pike Co., GA Archives site for all to see! I do have a question for you. My understanding, from other e-mails I have received, is that you may actually have visited the Hollonville Cemetery not the Coggin Cemetery: ========================================== Date: Tue, 07 Dec 1999 23:57:20 -0800 From: Stehling To: GAPIKE-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [GAPIKE] Coggin Cemetery location From Zebulon, Ga go west on Hwy 18 3 1/10th miles, take right go 2 5/10th miles, take dirt road right 9/10 miles to Coggin Cemetery on right of road. They are buried at Hollonville Cemetery. The cemetery is approx 5/10 mile south of Hollonville on Hollonville Rd. From Hollonville Cemetery, go south on Hollonville Rd. 2.6 miles, take left on paved road. Go 9/10 mile and this is Coggin Cemetery. Buried here are John Silas Coggin b July 23, 1778; d Aug 12, 1853. Sarah Bowland b Nov 2, 1780; d July 13 1852. It was interesting locating these cemeteries. Wilbur ====================== Valerie, we did find the Coggins cemetery but not where I thought. It is off of Beek Road. We went from Hollonville toward Zebulon until we reached Beek...then about 1/2 mile on the right. I have made pictures and hope (note hope-new scanner and learning) to scan to all so you can see the age of this cemetery. The stones are so old and many are sinking into the ground and broken. Many are above the ground with a broken end or side. There are no names on most of the sites. Barbara - my notes from Lynn Cunningham say that all these folks are buried at Hollonville Cemetery and NOT Coggin Cemetery: Can read the following: William P., son of J. L. and Mrs. Belle Coggin - b. May 11, 1876 and d. Feb. 16, 1895. John G. - b. May 9, 1873 and d. Oct. 21, 1918 - wife is Bertie (looks like a Y) - b. Sept. 4, 1875 and d. Oct. 12, 1916. This very old grave has a new marker at the top reading: Randolph Hollon, b. 1800 and d. Jan. 27, 1863...and the larger marker at the bottom- Caroline Sturdivant Hollon, wife of Randolph Hollon, b. April 27, 1809 and d. July 5, 1883...Buried Old Union Cemetery Gough Delta Co., Texas. Someone years ago tried to scratch into the porous stone his name and dates. Viola Pennington, wife of Thomas A. Connell, b. March 27, 1877 and d. Dec. 27, 1954. Several "new" very white marble stones and my camera angle and glare of sun prevented seeing names...I will be going back...but these are Coggin. Also, I believe the grave you found of William Oscar Coggin is the person found in the 1880 Census as William O. Chivers: Dock COGGIN Self M Male W 50 GA Farmer NC NC Mary COGGIN Wife M Female W 44 GA At Home GA MO Sarah COGGIN Dau S Female W 22 GA At Home GA GA >> Sarah CHIVERS Sister S Female W 46 GA Keeps House NC NC >>George L. CHIVERS Nephew S Male W 17 GA Farm Laborer GA GA >> William O. CHIVERS Nephew S Male W 10 GA Farm Laborer GA GA Sarah shows as single in 1870 census, so George must be her step son, not sure with William. Williamson United Methodist Church cemetery: William Oscar Coggin - b.1869/d.1940 and wife Rada Patton, b.1872/d. 1956. I hope someone can clarify the correct name of the cemetery and also shed some light on the William O. Chivers/Coggin issue. Right now, Barbara's transcription is on the Pike Co Gen Web Archives as the Coggin Cemetery -- I hope the information can be amended if we find it to truly be Hollonville Cemetery. 3. That would be great if someone could add to site. Now to see if I can answer each direction...also...isn't Larry Lynch or someone else on this site living in the area who could correctly answer...jump right in. I really do not know street/road names...I only go by "old" land marks. For instance to answer Bobbie's directions...this takes me to the "old Dunn house" across from the present golf course...then my "minds eye" cannot see the dirt road on right....will check it out next time. For Wilbur's directions...they are right...the Hollonville cem is right there at Hollonville across the pond from Patsy's house or across the road from where Mr. and Mrs. Harrison used to live before they passed away. Remember, in my first email I was not sure of the name, if any, of this cem. but Lee Gregg says it is called Hollonville and not some family name. Lee is the rural mail carrier - Patsy's son and grew up across the pond from the Hollonville cem...he is one I asked for location of Coggin's family cem. ...knew he would know. Wilbur's directions to Coggin cem are same as mine...only reason I knew name Beek Road is Lee told me then I looked for it. Sorry... I left out that I had turned left onto Beek and then 1/2 mile on right is cem. The county has tried real hard the last twenty years to put up road signs now that they have EMC service and fire trucks. Valerie, remember that I mentioned Coggin's at the Neal cem., Hollonville cem., the Coggin family cem., and Williamson Cem....there are probably other sites with a Coggin grave and as I see I will be glad to let you know. I moved away in 1980 and did not know all of the county roads even then...someone else needs to jump into this discussion. One final comment...I am trying to connect Ted Brooks and the Pike Historical Society so maybe they will,as I have mentioned before, take on the project of recording all of the county cemeteries. IF you go to the GA Gen Society site or the State Archives site you will see that Ted has published several cem. books and is an authority on how to "map" a cemetery. He just about lives at the Archives doing some type of research for another booklet. This would be good for all to have Pike recorded completely. 3. Margaret (and other interested parties), I am also descended from this same Josiah Allen and Elizabeth Browning, through their son, Robert A. Allen (1792-1876), who married Frances Hester (thought to be a sister to Wyatt Hester, whom you mention for your own line). Robert and Frances' daughter, Mary Ann Allen (1824-1865) was married to William Riley Jones (1807-1869), who in turn were parents to Martha Frances Jones (1850-1927 who was married to William Taylor Harris (1847-1900). They were my great grandparents. Some of you on the list have seen this before, but I wanted to again get it out there for others who might not have seen it. With regard to Pike County, I am working on Harris, Jones, Allen and Hester. I also have many "cousin" connections to the Cauthen and Bevil families. Josiah Allen, who married Elizabeth Browning, was my fourth great grandfather. Their daughter, Mary Ann, married Wyatt Hester. Their daughter, Margaret Ruth, married Milton Adair McCleskey. I am their daughter. I am one of several Heflin researchers who haven't been working on our Allen very long. One of our members returned, recently, from Pike Co. where he got copies of some deeds and wills. The Pike Co. names that I am researching are Allen, Browning, Heflin, Hester, Bevil, Ellis, and Boman. John Ray Sanders served in the 44th Georgia Infantry during the Civil War. After the war John Ray and Sarah Sanders moved to Arkansas. 1. [GAPIKE] Can someone clarify the cemetery -- Hollonville or Coggin
    2. Barbara -- Thank you for taking the time from your day to visit the cemeteries and for giving them a visual life for me. 1. [GAPIKE] Whitfield Huff, b. ca 1799, VA > Pike and Spalding Cos, GA
    2. Looking for any information about Whitfield HUFF, possibly the son of Thomas and Tabitha HUFF. Whitfield was married to Elizabeth MARTIN, dau of John MARTIN and Martha CARGILL, on 21 August 1825 in Pike Co, GA. They are found on the 1850 Pike Co, GA census and Elizabeth is then found on the 1860 Spalding Co, GA census. They had a daughter Martha Ann, b. 1832, GA. Is she the Martha Ann who married Lebud L. HOLMES in Spalding Co, GA, probably in 1852 [Marriage Book A]? Does anyone have a list of the HUFFS buried in Hollonville Cemetery? Also, is there a Martha Ann Huff HOLMES buried at Hollonville? 2. Lynn B. Cunningham
    3. The Pike County Journal. Zebulon, Pike County, Georgia, October 11, 1895 Will Ridley of Beeks was carried to Macon Monday by a deputy marshall and bound over in the sum of $300 to answer before the U.S. court for interfering in some way with the mail at Beeks. The Journal learns that there are certain circumstances which will greatly mitigate [the ] offense if indeed an offense has been committed. Mr. Ridley only recently married the charming daughter of Mr. S.S. Coggin and has many friends who were greatly surprised to hear of such a charge against him and who hope that he will be able to show to the court that he is guilty of no criminal conduct.
