    2. Lynn B. Cunningham
    3. The Pike County Journal. Zebulon, Pike County, Georgia, Jan. 17, 1896 The wife of Mr. Bud Pitts, living above Williamson on the plank road died very suddenly last Friday. Mr. Pitts had gone off to haul a load of wood. When he came back he found the house full of smoke and Mrs. Pitts lying partially under the bed, a corpse, with her clothing on fire. A bullet hole was found in her stomach and it is supposed that Mrs. Pitts, whose mind had been deranged for some months, committed suicide. (Transcribed 11/17/02 Lynn Cunningham)

    2. Lynn B. Cunningham
    3. The Pike County Journal. Zebulon, Pike County, Georgia, Jan. 17, 1896 Dr. H. Perdue died at his home in Barnesville this week. He had been in declining health for a year or more. There has been some difference of opinion as to the doctor’s disease, it is said by some that he had consumption, while others said his trouble was cancer of the stomach. Dr. Perdue commenced the practice of medicine at The Rock in Upson county in 1870 and afterwards moved to Barnesville, this county, where he has been long recognized as one of the leading physicians in this section of the state. Dr. Perdue was a member of the Baptist church, a prominent and active member of the State Medical association, and a citizen true and upright. 1. [GAPIKE] 1896 Carmichael / Hale Marriage
    2. Lynn B. Cunningham
    3. The Pike County Journal. Zebulon, Pike County, Georgia, Jan. 17, 1896 A Beautiful Wedding Last Wednesday at the handsome home of Mr. and Mrs. R.W. Hale at Jolly, their niece, Miss Liora Hale was united in marriage to Mr. T.M. Carmichael of near Jackson, Ga. About fifteen couples, the special friends of the contracting parties, were present to witness the marriage and offer sincere congratulations. The parlor was decorated with holly branches and beautiful flowers and presented an appearance altogether fairy-like. At 11 o’clock a.m. the ceremony was performed most beautifully and impressively by Mr. Pharr of McDonough. It was a handsome couple. The bride was a perfect vision of loveliness in a dress of dark green. After the marriage the guests were invited into the dining room where a magnificent dinner was served. The collection of good things was extensive and prepared in the best manner known to the culinary art. The happy young couple left in the afternoon for their future home near Jackson, accompanied by Mr. Hale and Miss Emma, the bride’s sister. Mr. Carmichael is one of the most progressive and promising young men of this section, and has won as a bride one of the fairest and sweetest of Pike’s pretty daughters. The Journal wishes them an abundance of happiness. (Transcribed 11/17/02 Lynn Cunningham)

    2. Lynn B. Cunningham
    3. The Pike County Journal. Zebulon, Pike County, Georgia, Jan. 17, 1896 Two good friends of The Journal are Dr. and Mrs. Beckham of this place. They have each passed the age of three score years and ten and are now whitened by the frost of many winters. Mrs. Beckham had the misfortune to break her arm a year ago and this member has never recovered, which renders her practically helpless. Yet her good nature and pleasant smiles have never forsaken her. She is never happier than with a lot of her grand children about her, and in spirit she enters into their childish amusements with hearty good will. We tender our good old friends our best wished for the year that has now opened before us. 3. The Pike County Journal. Zebulon, Pike County, Georgia, Jan. 17, 1896 Milner Burned Out Eight Houses Swept Away At A Clip The Sufferers Are: Gardner, Berry, Holmes, Tyus, Lindsey & Hunt, Woodall & Head Vague rumors reached here yesterday of a most disastrous fire which occurred at Milner on Wednesday night. The report is that the fire originated in Gardner’s livery stable about 9 o’clock p.m. and burning this out rapidly leaped to Berry’s stable and thence to Gardner’s store Berry’s store Holmes drugstore Tyus’ store Lindsey’s store Head and Woodall’s store It is said that all the losers were protected by insurance except Judge Gardner. It was a fire that almost swept the plucky little town out of existence, and the hearty sympathy of everybody goes out to the unfortunate people in their great loss. 1. [GAPIKE] 1896 Uncle Bob Peters' Pension
    2. Lynn B. Cunningham
    3. The Pike County Journal. Zebulon, Pike County, Georgia, Jan. 24, 1896 Ineffably Happy Uncle Bob Peters on a High Horse Runs Down a Pension Now He Laughs By Day and Beholds Beautiful Visions By Night Happiness is said to be the ripples on the water that delight the eye as they dance and scintillate in the sunlight. Joy is described as that great moving undercurrent, profound and mighty, undisturbed by exterior conditions. If this distinction was correct, then it was the “reverent,” old fashioned joy with a big J that filled the heart of “Old Bob” Peters when he drew his first pension last Saturday on account of indigent pensioners. Uncle Bob lives down in the mountains. His goods and chattels are a steer and a cart. He never makes crops enough to subsist on and through the fall [and] winter he manages to scrape up a dime here and there by hauling a cart of lightwood to Zebulon. He has lived mighty hard for 30 years, and so slight have been the variations that a “aching void” in the region of the stomach was his normal condition. He belonged strictly to that latter class to whom Burns’ referred when he wrote: “Some ha’ meat that canna’ eat, Some can eat that ha’ no meat.” So on Saturday when Uncle Bob got his $60 check cashed he gave Judge Blasingame $40 of the amount and said: “Now, jes’ you keep that twel I calls for it.” He then put $20 in his pocket and started out for Harper’s store. He stepped in at the door and bursted out in a laugh - the first big laugh he had had in years, perhaps. He was first beginning to realize how rich he was. “Gi’me some of the bes’ coffee you got,” he said. “Quarter’s worth? Uncle Bob?” “Quarter’s worth the nation! Fix up two big dollars worth!” As the coffee was being put in the scales the old man broke out in another laugh. After the coffee was put up he wanted some meat. “Gi’me the biggest side you got,” and the laughing broke out afresh. “Now hand out 20 yards of the finest caliker you got, and come on down wi’ six yards o’ jeans. Money is no object with me. Got moore’n I’ve ever had since the War. Not but $20 per capity in the New Nited State of Georgia and me got $60.” Then the laugh that burst from the old man’s lips was contagious. Everybody commenced to laugh. Here the old man thought of his steer and he made for him. He untied the animal from a hitching post and put the line in the wagon. Stepping up in front, he gazed square into the steer’s face, and then as gaze met gaze, Uncle Bob could contain himself no longer and another inordinate laugh burst forth. He then drove up to the store and loaded his goods and proceeded the straightest way home. The last seen of him as he was going away he was laughing and shaking violently. The Journal is glad Uncle Bob got his pension. It is a bigger thing to him than anybody on earth. He deserves it and we hope he and his wife will live long to enjoy this annual pension. 1. Re: [GAPIKE] 1895 Owen / Powell Marriage - ties to Whatleys
    2. James : You know, I read you e-mail and then saved it to answer later. Meanwhile, I read Joe Cannafax Hutcheson Deed abstracts and found one that I added to my notes for Newton Allen Horton, son of Peyton F. Horton. Now, the funny thing is, I also have the 1880 Census abstract in my notes for Newton -- and guess who he is living with? Yes, Bricy Owen! Now, I don't know the exact relation, but Newton's sister, Emma A. Horton m. William Andrew Whatley. So there must be a tied between Wm Whatley and Ida (Whatley) Powell, 2nd wife of Bricy Owen! My guess is that Wm & Ida are siblings -- Wm b. ca 1855, Ida b. 1858. Newton A. Horton eventually moved to Carroll Co. GA where he lived until his death in 1916. 3. Valerie, I have Bricy first marrying Mary C. Carreker Sept. 28, 1871 in Meriwether Co. Bricy & Mary are shown in the 1880 Pike Co., Dist. 534, 1880 census with three children, James C., Mary A., and Emmett. His name is spelled Owen in the Merriwether County Marriage index, but is spelled Owens in the 1880 census. Mary's father, James Love Carreker and her step-mother Sarah E. Keith are also buried at Hollonville. Do you know if Mary is buried in Hollonville. James Majors VCJFreeman@aol.com wrote:Note: At Hollonville, Georgia Cemetery, Pike County: Bricy M. 1. [GAPIKE] Beeks, GA/Horton Cemetery - a wonderful of how it was "found" again!
    2. Lynn (and anyone else that is interested) -- Thank you for taking the time to give me a mental picture of the area. I can to the area along I-85 b/t Atlanta & Auburn (War Eagle!) fairly well. Get me off that space and I am lost. This is my husband's line, not mine. I am a Southern California native :-) I realize now, I should have asked the relationship b/t Beeks and Williamson, not Beeks and Hollonville. But your "picture" was wonderful! Now, a little more about the Horton Cemetery > Just before you turn on Beeks Road off Hollonville Road, there is a cemetery on > the map that is not named - this may be the Horton Cemetery. Horton Cemetery is "lost." It was on property that belonged to Peyton Flournoy Horton. It has either been concreted over, had a building built over it, or just plain lost to overgrown growth. To make a long story short, in the summer or fall of 2001, I was contacted by Mary J. (Horton) Hall and her sister, Sandra (Horton) Hall. The had seen my work on the Hortons and were looking to see if there was a connection b/t their line and the Hortons of Pike Co. Yes, there was! They are descendants of Pike Co pioneers, William B. & Mary Horton, through their son, Peyton Flournoy Horton and 2nd (of 3) wife, Susan Fitts. Sandra had recently relocated from the Powder Springs area to Williamson, GA. The ironic thing is, Sandra knew NOTHING of her Horton connections to Pike Co.! She had never heard of Williamson until she went looking for a new location for her dog kennel business!! And she ended up moving to land that was just within a mile or two of where her Horton ancestors had settled in the 1820s!! The final Peyton F. Horton place was at this location, per Joe Cannafax: "The Old Peyton F. Horton - Garfield Hutchison Homeplace is on Hutchinson Rd -- it runs off Hwy 362 just below Williamson going toward Hollonville, the home place is on the right. It's an old farm house and someone is living in it today." Sandra actually made a visit to the folks and could find only a few graves. She then went on a mission! She went to the courthouse and obtained a list of all the land Peyton had owned! In the end, the location of where we believe the family cemetery was is NOT at the location graciously given to us by Joe C. (Keep in mind the Hortons are not a direct line -- I just got deeply involved to help out them out cause I enjoy a hunt and they do tie to Bob's Coggins & Nixons!) Sandra was able to make the location. I believe it was near Williamson near the Spalding Co line. I would have to go back through all the e-mails we traded around over a several month time frame. The amazing conclusion to this is that Mary & Sandra's ancestors were more or less buried on property that is adjacent to the property Sandra now lives on! Talk about serendipity. I hope Mary (Horton) Hall will jump in with the parts of the story/location I am missing, as I know she is sub'd to this list. Valerie (Johnson) Freeman Tustin, California "Remember your history.
