    1. [GAPIKE] 1896 Davis / Pryor Marriage
    2. Lynn B. Cunningham
    3. Here's another couple who married in a public road because of parental objections. The Pike County Journal. Zebulon, Pike County, Georgia, Feb. 28, 1896 Mr. Lon Davis, a young farmer living near Creswell in Spalding county and Miss Jackie Pryor of near Beeks, this county, were married last week. The ceremony was performed by Esquire Bledsoe of Zetella in the public road near the residence of Dr. Yarborough. This little irregularity was on account of parental objections. The bride is the eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. G.W. Pryor and has many friends in Zebulon where she attended school. (Transcribed 11/17/02 Lynn Cunningham)

    1. [GAPIKE] 1896 Delk Arrested Again
    2. Lynn B. Cunningham
    3. There is more to come on this story. The Pike County Journal. Zebulon, Pike County, Georgia, Jan. 24, 1896 Delk Is In Limbo He Was Re-Captured Last Saturday He Is Held For Murder He is Charged With the Murder of an Old Man In Meriwether Three weeks ago an account of an attempt at highway robbery and the subsequent arrest and escape of the notorious Taylor Delk appeared in these columns. About one month ago two parties broke into the house of Messrs. Cicero and Ab Connally, two old bachelors living just across the line of Pike in Meriwether county. The two old gentleman were severely beaten and since then one of them has died from the effect of the wounds received. It was supposed that the parties were seeking money that the Connallys were said to have hoarded, but none was found. Taylor Delk and a young man of bad reputation by the name of Langford, were suspected, and Taylor [Delk] was arrested, charged with murder. Delk was accompanied by the bailiff to the house of a friend, where Delk proposed to give bond. While on this trip Delk made a dash for liberty and made good his escape. Since that time he has been lurking around his old haunts and has eluded every attempt to arrest him. Saturday morning, a bailiff from Coweta county, heard that Delk was in the neighborhood of Senoia. He hastened to Senoia for help. Accompanied by marshall Reeves, [they] set out on the hunt. A few miles from Senoia the officers espied Delk in the road ahead of them and discovered at once he carried a shotgun. They drove on leisurely and finally overtook him before he discovered their identity. The officers covered him with their pistols before he could offer resistance. He went to Senoia without trouble, but when the officers prepared to handcuff him before starting for Meriwether county they had no easy job. Delk swore vengeance. He was lodged in the Meriwether county jail, where he now awaits trial on the charge of murder. Langford, his accomplice, has not been found by the officers. Some novelist ought to form Delk’s acquaintance. He would score a big hit as the arch villain in a detective story. (Transcribed 11/17/02 Lynn Cunningham)

    3. Thanks, will remove the second wife..... Both Eugene and Stephen were sons of Joseph C and Mary. Joseph was my grandfather's uncle and Eugene and Stephen were his first cousins. Joseph C. Beckham and Mary A. C. Mann had: Joseph Carson Beckham Jr. b. c. 1846 in Pike Co. Stephen A. Beckham, b. 1847/48 Mary A. W. Beckahm b. c. 1850 Archie Beckham b. c. 1851 Eugene E. Beckham, b. c. 1856 Frederick Beckham, b. c. 1858 David Carson Beckham Joseph Oliver Beckham. Because two children were named Joseph I assume the first died young. Joseph Carson, who died in 1798, was the father of Martha Carson Beckham, Dr. Joseph C. Beckham's mother. David Carson was Martha's uncle. She was married to James Beckham at David's house in Baldwin/Jones Co., GA in 1811. Charles C. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Lynn B. 3. The Pike County Journal. Zebulon, Pike County, Georgia, Jan. 24, 1896 The Wilson Case Sheriff Gwyn has orders from the court to eject Cyrus R. Wilson from his premises in the first district. The sheriff went out some time ago to do this, but Mr. Wilson secured an injunction signed by Judge Clark of Atlanta which held up the Sheriff’s process. Burr and Daniel, plaintiffs in the case carried the matter before Judge Beck and had the injunction dissolved. The papers have been returned to Pike and now with authority from the court, Sheriff Gwyn will immediately execute the Judge’s order and dispossess Mr. Wilson. This case has been in court some time. Mr. Wilson declares that if he is put out, he will sue the sheriff for $10,000 damages. He says that his lawyer, Peter Francisco Smith of Atlanta, says he can recover damages and he is going to sue for it if the sheriff puts him out. (Transcribed 11/17/02 Lynn Cunningham) Note: Cyrus R. Wilson was married to Nancy H. Allen, daughter of Young Drewry Allen and Jane Moore. Cyrus’ daughter Mary E., was married to Alonzo Hope Rawls from Coweta County.

    1. [GAPIKE] 1896 Rev. Andrew Peden Obit
    2. Lynn B. Cunningham
    3. The Pike County Journal. Zebulon, Pike County, Georgia, Jan. 24, 1896 A Good Man Dies In the death of Rev. Andrew Peden, which occurred in his home in the western part of the county last Sunday, the county of Pike loses one of her grandest citizens. Mr. Peden had been in ill health for some time and the fire which burned a servant’s house in his yard a few weeks ago caused him to suffer prostration from which he was unable to rally. He was 85 years of age and served faithfully and efficiently in the Christian ministry for fifty years. His good deeds and his wonderful example will live long in this section - a benediction to our people. Also: Reverend A.G. Peden The honored and revered old gentleman breathed his last breath at 2 o’clock Sunday morning the 18 inst. Such a character is seldom found; so noble, so good, so grand, all combined with the highest intellect. To converse with the Rev. Mr. Peden, on any subject was knowledge. His mind was bright and clear, even when he had to be assisted to his old arm chair at the fire side. Such a worthy, useful man laid in his grave, it is so sad. His faithful, devoted wife will miss him sorrowfully, she has nursed him so long and was ever ready to administer to his wants. We know he has won the rest for which he labored, he was so devoted to his church, loved all denominations, but the Presbyterian was his choice. He stood among them as a counselor. Only a short while before his death, on his eighty-fifth birthday he asked his wife to send for his neighbor that he wanted to have prayer. She told him that it was night and that is was very late, then he said “hold me up on my knees.” She did so and there on his feeble bended knees, offered his heart-felt petitions to the Great I Am, whom he loved and obeyed, and in whose presence he will rejoice evermore. Such a gentle, loving heart! During my last call, he remarked, “I am so sorry you are going away, come to my burial.” Farewell, good man, your kindness as a neighbor will never be forgotten. Tears and love for the widow, love and tears for the fatherless children and grand children. Neighbors, friends, community and county, Mr. Peden’s loss is felt among you all. Remember his admonition. - Narcissa (Transcribed 11/17/02 Lynn Cunningham) Note: At Friendship Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Pike County, Georgia: Rev. Andrew G. Valerie, Hollonville is in the upper northwest corner of Pike County. It is about an equal distance from Hollonville to both Meriwether (east) and Spalding (north) county lines. Beeks appears to be about 2 1/2 miles due east of Hollonville on Highway 362. From Hollonville going west on 362, it is about 2 1/2 miles to Meriwether county. Another road leading out of Hollonville and going southeast is called the Hollonville Road. About 3 miles from Hollonville on the Hollonville Road, you can turn left on Beeks Road and go to Beeks which is on Highway 362. (The three roads, Hollonville Road, Hwy 362 and Beeks Road, form a triangle laying on it's side with Hollonville as it's apex.) Hollonville Cemetery is about 1/4 mile from Hollonville on Hollonville Road. The Coggin Cemetery is off Beeks Road, just about midway between Hwy 362 and Hollonville Road. Just before you turn on Beeks Road off Hollonville Road, there is a cemetery on the map that is not named - this may be the Horton Cemetery. Williamson is about 6 miles east from Hollonville on Highway 362. From Williamson, which is close to the Spalding County line, 362 goes to Griffin. Pike County is surrounded by Meriwether on the east, Upson on the south, Lamar on the west and Spalding on the north. I hope this is not confusing and you are able to create a mental picture of the Hollonville area. VCJFreeman@aol.com wrote: > Where is/was Beeks? Is it near Williamson & the Spalding County line? 3. Lynn, Do you have anymore info on these Woodall's listed here? I have Woodall ancestors, and am wondering if they could be connected to mine?
