The Pike County Journal. Zebulon, Pike County, Georgia, Mar. 6, 1896 Death of Mr. D.M. Pitts of Molena After an illness of about ten days Mr. D.M. Pitts died of paralysis at his home in Molena, Ga., at 4 oclock yesterday afternoon, Feb. 24, 1896. Mr. Pitts was a member of the Baptist church having professes faith in this church in his youth. He was a brave, warm-hearted, Christian gentleman, loved an honored by all who knew him. He lived a number of years in Lee county, near Liberty church of which he was a consistent member. In the fall of 1892 with his family he moved to this place, and has made us a good and very useful citizen. He had many friends in Molena and vicinity who will be deeply grieved to learn of his death. Owing to the illness of Mrs. Pitts, the funeral services were held at the residence this afternoon at 1:30 oclock, Rev. J.W. Taylor conducting the service. His remarks were deep and very impressive. After which the pallbearers took charge of the remains and all that was mortal of our friend and brother was laid to rest in Mt. Olive cemetery. At the time of his death he was 52 yrs. 6 mo. of age. His wife Mrs. V.A. Pitts, two sons Harry and Edgar Pitts, one daughter Mrs. Edmond J. Allen survive him. We mourn with them in their sad bereavement. May the spirit of God the Father hover over and keep them while they live and prepare them to meet Him in the Land that is fairer than day is the prayer of their friend. - J.H. The Pike County Journal. Zebulon, Pike County, Georgia, Mar. 6, 1896 The Journal is sorry to note the death of Mr. John Means, which occurred at his home near Meansville last Friday morning. He was 84 years of age and general prostration was the cause of his death. Mr. Means was a man who was respected and esteemed wherever he was known. He was honest and honorable in all transactions with his fellow man, and in his death the county has lost one of its best and purest man. The Pike County Journal. Zebulon, Pike County, Georgia, Mar. 20, 1896 Ernest P. Shannon of Rover and Miss Leila Dunbar, a charming young lady of Hollonville were married last Sunday. On account of parental objections the young couple had an old fashioned runaway marriage at the home of Esquire J.L. Coggin. The bridegroom carried his bride to Rover where they now live. The name Rivers jumps out at me from this list. James Rivers married Mildred (Milly) Green 4 Oct 1827 in Jasper Co, GA. Mildred is buried at Liberty Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery, Liberty Hill, Pike Co (now Lamar Co), GA. I have no idea what happened to James. Mildred was the daughter of Thomas Green (abt 1758 - 15 Jan 1849 Liberty Hill, Pike Co, GA) and Mildred (Millie) Appling (1759 - abt 1849) - Thomas & Mildred being my husband's 5th great-grandparents. Does anyone know what the relationship is between Sarah Rivers and James Rivers? Lisa ----- Original Message ----- From: Lynn B. I should have continued my posting concerning Solomon G. Beckham Jr. by saying that I have some doubts that he was actually the son of Solomon G., and grandson of James and Martha Carson Beckham. The reason I wonder if the information, received from another researcher is true, is that Solomon G. Beckham, along with his wife Apsyllah Ann Milner moved to Texas between 1850, when they appeared on the Pike Co., GA Census and 1855 when their daughter Georgia Beckham was born in Texas. Then by 1865 they were in Louisiana where youngest son John was born. Then back to Panola Co., TX So, if Solomon G. Beckham of Early Co., GA was indeed their son he must have gone to Texas with them as a child and then returned to Georgia. This is not probable. When I have time I will go down to the university here to look at the Panola Co. TX 1860 and 1870 census films. CHILDREN OF SOLOMON G. BECKHAM AND APSYLLAH ANN MILNER: 1. Matthew Beckham, b. 1850, Pike Co., GA (in household of his father in Panola Co., TX 1880) 2. Solomon G. Beckham b. 1853, Pike Co, GA (subject to doubt expressed above) 3. Georgia Beckham, b. Panola Co., TX 1855. (in father's household in 1880) 4. John Beckham b. 1865, Louisiana. (In father's household 1880) CHARLES CALDWELL El Paso, TX
According to what I have Solomon G. Beckham Jr. was born 13 Dec 1853 in Pike Co., GA to Solomon G. Beckham and his wife Apsyllah Ann Milner. He would not have appeared, of course, on the Pike Co. 1850 census because he was born 3 years older. He would be the Solomon G. Beckham who appeared later in Early Co., GA. Charles C.
Solomon G. Beckham was a son of James and Martha Carson Beckham. He was born c. 1814 in Jones Co., GA. He married Apsyllah Ann Milner 13 Sep 1839 in Monroe or Pike Co., GA. Andrew Jackson Beckham was also a son of James and Martha. He was born 18 Feb 1816, Jones Co., GA. Doed 18 Jun 1887, Pike Co., GA. He married (1) Amelia Henderson in 1835 in Pike or Monroe Co., GA. She died and he married (2) Mary Shepard in Pike Co., GA. In our old family Bible there are three clippings concerning Amelia Henderson Beckham's death. One, at least, has a byline of Zebulon, GA. I can send them complete Beckham file, either from the beginning (about 1700) to what I have until the present, or from James and Martha Carson Beckham down to the present. Most from James and Martha on down is my own line. I cannot, however, send it in the text of an EMail message. It would have to be an RTF file which would open into Wordpad. If anyone is interested let me know and I will send it right away. Charles C.

Lynn - What was the relationship, if any, between James G Holmes and Louise? Was Eliza Beckham the sister of Louise's mother? How does Eliza tie in to the Beckhams we've been talking about? Who were Louise's parents? Seems like an unfair split to me. Eliza was fit to take care of Louise but not her money. Wonder how they expected Eliza to meet Louise's expenses? Perhaps the money was all Mr. Holmes was interested in??? Lisa ----- Original Message ----- From: Lynn B. Holmes application for guardianship of the person and property of Louise Holmes. Louise is a pretty little girl about three years old. Her aunt, Miss Eliza Beckham, asks that the guardianship be vested in her. She was represented by Col. S.N. Woodward, while Mr. Holmes was represented by Col. Joseph J. Rogers. The ordinary decided that the property, amounting to three or four thousand dollars, should be turned over to Holmes and that the person of the child be given to Miss Beckham. More to come in this continuing story. The Pike County Journal. Zebulon, Pike County, Georgia, Feb. 6, 1896 The Journal learns that Taylor Delk who was placed in jail at Greenville a few weeks ago on the charge of highway robbery has given bond. It is learned also that he has sworn eternal vengeance against some parties in this county whom he charges with having offended his dignity. (Transcribed 11/17/02 Lynn Cunningham)
The Pike County Journal. Zebulon, Pike County, Georgia, Jan. 31, 1896 Mr. John Lifsey, of Lifsey, died last Sunday of cancer of the wrist. Blood poison resulted from the cancer. He was buried at Finchers church on Monday, Rev. A.B. Pope conducting the funeral services. Mr. Lifsey was 72 years old and has been a member of Finchers church for a long time. He lived an exemplary life, one which his nine surviving children may contemplate with great satisfaction. The Pike County Journal. Zebulon, Pike County, Georgia, Feb. 14, 1896 Mrs. M.E. Adams Sweet mama is dead. This pathetic sentence was received by the last mail from Miss Mary Lou Adams, the devoted and affectionate daughter of the deceased. No father, no mother, no brother, no sister. Mrs. Adams was the second daughter of Josee and Eliza Dunn, and a sister of J.D. Dunn. She was 38 years of age. Her birthplace was at Hollonville, Ga. Friends and relatives there kindly cherish her memory. Mollie was a quiet, unassuming girl; loved most when best known. She was an obedient pupil - the schoolroom is a good index to womanhood, and as years came and went, commendable acts increased. Like her exemplary mother she possessed one of the best traits of character - charity. In 1876 she was received in full fellowship by the Baptist church of Christ at Hollonville, Ga. Rev. E.M. Hooten administered the rite of baptism. Since that time she has adorned the faith she professed. In 1877, Mollie Dunn was happily married to Thomas Adams of Barnesville, Ga. They lived together only three years after marriage, before death entered their home and carried Tommie away. She then, like the Syrophenician [?] woman, clung to the widows Friend who promised to be with them, even unto death. Last fall health failed, she left Barnesville, the place and people she loved, and went to her father at Roopville, Ga. [Carroll County]. Pas watch over her dying face lessened the sting of death. on the 20th of December 1895, our sister softly, sweetly smiled and was robed for the grave by Carrolls best Christian ladies. The beautiful casket hid from our sight the jewel which it contained. The Lord says it is mine. No fond brother was there to wipe the death damp from her brow. A friend that sticketh closer than a brother was there - Jesus. O, Love divine; O, Savior, God! At the thought of Thee all things depart. - Sis Narce (Transcribed 11/17/02 Lynn Cunningham)

The Pike County Journal. Zebulon, Pike County, Georgia, Feb. 21, 1896 In the year 1834 Capt. A.S. Allen, then a boy on his fathers farm near Zebulon, stuck a mulberry sprout into the ground. At the time, the sprout was not larger than a lead pencil and had been used by the boy as an ox goad. Today it is a tree almost nineteen feet in circumference at a distance of two feet from the ground and is said to be the largest mulberry tree in Georgia. (Transcribed 11/17/02 Lynn Cunningham)
